In his small North Carolina hometown, Ron Clark (Matthew Perry) leads a comfortable life as a successful elementary school teacher, earning the respect of the community. However, he knows there are students elsewhere who need him more. Following his inner calling, Clark uproots to New York City, hoping to make a difference for the disenfranchised youths the school system has left behind. Clark makes it his mission to turn around the worst students, even though he knows his job is on the line.

00:00:00Ron Clark, ready for your first day?
00:00:11Yes, ma'am.
00:00:12I'll be with you in a minute, and I'll introduce you to your class.
00:00:28Hi.
00:00:30What happened to you?
00:00:34C.J. says I can't learn, so I should go with the trash.
00:00:38Okay, settle down.
00:00:39Let's get out our silent reading.
00:00:48I'm Mr. Clark.
00:00:49What's your name?
00:00:51Kathy Craig.
00:00:53Nice to meet you.
00:00:54You know, I'm so sorry.
00:01:00I'm so forgetful.
00:01:01What's my name again?
00:01:03It's Mr. Clark.
00:01:04Oh, see?
00:01:05You just learned something.
00:01:07Let's get you out of there.
00:01:09Mr. Clark?
00:01:13Yeah?
00:01:14Is you going to be our new teacher?
00:01:16Ellen, no whispering.
00:01:17We'll arrive at Swan Quarter about five, like we always do.
00:01:33Pick up the shrimp bait at the general store, like we always do, and hop the ferry over to Ocacoke Island for some fine flounder fishing.
00:01:42Like we always do.
00:01:43Well, folks, it's not quite the end of the year summer celebration we expected.
00:01:50But let's take a moment to thank our own Mr. Clark, whose fifth grade class tested number one in Beaufort County for the fourth year in a row.
00:01:59We have a surprise that we have put together for you.
00:02:05Unfortunately, it's outside.
00:02:15Oh!
00:02:17Y'all know Mr. Clark began here as a temporary teacher.
00:02:22Well, we've all chipped in on something to help him feel more permanent.
00:02:26Oh.
00:02:29I love it here, but I've got to move on, Mom, before they use that parking space for my grave.
00:02:55New York public schools are desperate for good teachers.
00:02:59Newspaper says they're begging for them.
00:03:02Dad, every year I tell my students to go for what they want in life.
00:03:06Dream big, take risks.
00:03:08It's time I started living up to my own words.
00:03:11Oh.
00:03:12I'm going to miss you guys.
00:03:14But I've got to go.
00:03:15We understand, sweetie.
00:03:20Goodbye.

00:05:41Yes.
00:05:41Well then, honey, you're going to need something else.
00:05:44Personal injury lawyers.
00:05:46Because once your way behind goes on up in there,
00:05:48they'll be carrying you back up the same way you went in.
00:05:50What kind of foolishness is this going on up there
00:05:52that I'm trying to teach?
00:05:53You know I ain't going to get through these...

00:06:17You're welcome.
00:06:18If you could just look at my resume.
00:06:20I apologize.
00:06:20We just don't have a position available.
00:06:22All my kids tested above grade level.
00:06:24I'm sure they did.
00:06:26And good luck to you.
00:06:40Ma'am, you forgot your first thing.
00:06:59You're welcome.
00:07:02So, my merry men and ladies, let us steal from the rich and help a poor, brave waiter go henceforth into the kitchen and command your dinners.
00:07:17Nice hat.
00:07:18Nice hat distracts the customers from that accent.
00:07:20Hey, watch out.
00:07:21I got a bow and arrow.
00:07:22What show are you in?
00:07:23Everybody works here as an actor.
00:07:25I'm a teacher.
00:07:25Order up.
00:07:26You are going to change before your first class, right?
00:07:28Very funny.
00:07:29How about you?
00:07:30Me?
00:07:31Oh, I'm taking a break from acting.
00:07:33The Cleopatra gig is very challenging.
00:07:35Hey, who's that?
00:07:39It's the Queen of Egypt.
00:07:40In love with Mark Antony.
00:07:42No, I mean, who is that?
00:07:46Marissa.
00:07:47And she's even more beautiful out of costume.
00:07:50I'm Jason.
00:07:51Otherwise known as?
00:07:53Mark Antony.
00:07:56Sorry.
00:07:57It happens all the time, bro.
00:07:58Don't sweat it.
00:08:05Get them fake nails out of mine.
00:08:10Go, go, go, go.
00:08:15I'm tracking the cleft in front.
00:08:18Hey, hey, hey, come over here.
00:08:21Hey, come over here.
00:08:22Hey, hey, hey, hey.
00:08:23Enough.
00:08:25Hey, Sean Mitchell, my office now.
00:08:28I'm not playing with you, son.
00:08:34I ain't no son.
00:08:35Mr. Socks, what the hell was that?
00:08:39That boy's your student.
00:08:41Not anymore.
00:08:43You walk away, you stay away.
00:08:47You can have the little bastards.
00:08:50I can start right now.
00:09:01You're lucky you got detention and not an assault charge.
00:09:05I can start right now.
00:09:06I can start right now.
00:09:07I can start right now.
00:09:10Hello.
00:09:11I'm Ron Clark.
00:09:13I wanted to let you know I taught fifth grade for four years in North Carolina.
00:09:17You need a teacher.
00:09:18I need a job.
00:09:18So let's help each other out.
00:09:20Mr. Clark, I'm sure you're very sincere, but I'm afraid you might be a little too...
00:09:24Too what?
00:09:24Too white?
00:09:25Too tall?
00:09:25Too ugly?
00:09:27Nice.
00:09:27I specialize in raising standardized test scores.
00:09:35This is the honors class.
00:09:37These students score in the top ten percentile of the state exams every year.
00:09:42We divide each grade into four classes according to their achievement scores.
00:09:46What about this class?
00:09:51This class tested at the bottom of the entire New York City School District.
00:09:56They do seem a little bit squirrely.
00:09:59Oh, they're a bit more than squirrely.
00:10:01These students have problems with learning, discipline, social skills, like Tayshaun Mitchell.
00:10:08Two strikes going on three towards the juvenile detention center.
00:10:11I'm your man.
00:10:16I have an opening in grade three.
00:10:18If your credentials check out...
00:10:19You have an opening right here.
00:10:21No.
00:10:22Last year, this class went through six different teachers before Christmas.
00:10:25Yes.
00:10:25Nobody wants them, and I do.
00:10:27So what's the problem?
00:10:30Test scores are very important to me.
00:10:32It's how I keep my job.
00:10:34I can start right now.
00:10:37You can start on Monday.
00:10:41State exams are in May.
00:10:45Yo, babe!
00:10:57I think she liked me.
00:10:58High five, bro.
00:10:59I want a break.
00:11:05Two hundred bucks and nothing.
00:11:08Jeez, you should have heard them in there.
00:11:10Oh, Cleo, we got your snake right here.
00:11:12And then they just stiffed me.
00:11:18Want a half?
00:11:19Yeah, sure.
00:11:22You're a teacher, Clark.
00:11:23What is it?
00:11:24I mean, why don't guys grow up?
00:11:26Ooh, I'm afraid my level of expertise expires in the sixth grade.
00:11:31You got a job?
00:11:33Inner Harlem Elementary.
00:11:35I'm going to start meeting my kids tomorrow.
00:11:36Oh, you might want to hold on to this.
00:11:40Maybe your last meal.
00:11:42No, they're going to love me.
00:11:43I'd like to meet all the parents, Miss Vasquez, before I start teaching.
00:11:57Julio?
00:11:58To get them involved.
00:12:00Julio!
00:12:00Damn it.
00:12:03Who is he?
00:12:05He a clown, Mr. Clark.
00:12:08But he's a good boy.
00:12:10I had him when I was only 14.
00:12:12That's okay.
00:12:13Like I was saying...
00:12:15I was just saying, you can help out by working with Julio every night on his homework.
00:12:22Sure.
00:12:23Okay.
00:12:24Together, we can get him excited about learning.
00:12:27American history.
00:12:32Solar system.
00:12:34Pre-algebra.
00:12:34I just want Julio to achieve his full potential.
00:12:44So, Mr. Clark, are you married?
00:12:49No.
00:12:51It's very nice to meet you all today.
00:12:54You know, I've never had a student from India before.
00:13:04How do you pronounce your name?
00:13:06Badstia.
00:13:08I like to read, especially when I...
00:13:09Quiet, ladki.
00:13:11Men are talking, okay?
00:13:21Watch it.
00:13:24Watch it.
00:13:32They don't need no stuff.
00:13:43Shameka Wallace?
00:13:45I'm Mr. Clark, your new teacher.
00:13:47I called earlier.
00:13:48It's Saturday, fool.
00:13:49Shameka, who is it?
00:13:51Nobody.
00:13:51Oh, aren't those your brothers?
00:13:55No.
00:13:56They're my kids.
00:13:57I'm 12 years old, and I got three kids.
00:14:00Who are you talking to?
00:14:01I'm Mr. Clark, Shameka's new teacher.
00:14:03What the hell happened to Mr. Solace?
00:14:05Fool, quick.
00:14:06He's wet.
00:14:08I swear to God, your teachers come in and out of this school.
00:14:11Yeah, I know that.
00:14:12That's why I'm here.
00:14:13I was hoping you would work with me.
00:14:14I already got a job, mister.
00:14:16I got two jobs.
00:14:17And four kids, and a brother on parole.
00:14:20I'm late for work.
00:14:21I want to make your man out of威 graphics.
00:14:28I can hear you scream and demand your respect.
00:14:31With the left, hook your nose in respect.
00:14:32I know I am acting like a buggy.
00:14:34I'm if we know you're not mistaken.
00:14:34Lay another hand on my mind.
00:14:35Be getting me more subway.
00:14:36It's all they call.
00:14:37It's another shot to the soul.
00:14:39Tell me what can I do when I've 13 and Soul.
00:14:41Can I lay a hand on my chop?
00:14:43Boom.
00:14:43I'ma get you.
00:14:44If I land, I'm drunken.
00:14:45Fuck my pals speak out.
00:14:46And then I try to hold the tears back.
00:14:48Pretty gate satisfaction.
00:14:49I'm going to find him in this video.
00:14:59I'm going to find him on his hands.
00:15:05He's the shadowbox.
00:15:14He's the shadowbox.
00:15:18Hey, that's enough. Get moving.
00:15:23Nice to see you, Tayshon.
00:15:26Good morning, Principal Turner.
00:15:30Okay, good morning.
00:15:33Oh, hello. I'm Ron Clark.
00:15:36I guess I'll be teaching you.
00:15:39Yeah.
00:15:41No, I know. She said all my stuff.
00:15:54Oh, she's in here.
00:15:56I know.

00:16:00You dream about your mama.
00:16:02Oh!
00:16:04Take your seats.
00:16:06Yo, teacher, Shamika's feeling sick today.
00:16:09Yeah, sick of damn teachers.
00:16:16Okay, because this is our first day, I have a surprise for all of you.
00:16:20What?
00:16:21I'll tell you, Julio, if you turn around.
00:16:26Today, there will be no school work.
00:16:30School work!
00:16:32Shamika, don't do that.
00:16:39Shamika, don't.
00:16:42Well, what?
00:16:44What are you gonna do?
00:16:45Suspend me?
00:16:46Go ahead, suspend me!
00:16:47I wanna leave!
00:16:48You'll wanna leave!
00:16:49Hey!
00:16:50Hey, look, the fool's leaving already.
00:16:55Sit down!
00:17:00You see this?
00:17:11This means that this year is going to be different.
00:17:14This year is going to be about more than school.
00:17:17This year, we are going to be a family.
00:17:20But you don't look nothing like me.
00:17:25I am going to be your family, and you are going to be my family.
00:17:29And that means that I am not leaving.
00:17:31And you are not leaving.
00:17:34Do you have any lip gloss?
00:17:44Yeah, I look like you.

00:18:38Whoa.
00:18:39Blue.
00:18:40I think I'll see the blue.
00:18:42Oh, nasty.
00:18:45Well, what do you think?
00:18:48We think it looks stupid.
00:18:53Who vandalized this room?
00:18:56I did, sir.
00:19:00Mr. Clark, this sort of stunt me.
00:19:04I'm going over being an Aurora, but it doesn't work for me.
00:19:07My school, my rules, my way.
00:19:17All right.
00:19:19Oh, put your gum in here.
00:19:21Gum in here.
00:19:22Hurry up.
00:19:23All the gum in this jar.
00:19:24The gum jar.
00:19:25Come on.
00:19:26Come on.
00:19:28Right in here.
00:19:29Hey, no, I see you.
00:19:31Come on.
00:19:31Right in there.
00:19:53Okay.
00:19:54To your left.
00:19:55Left.
00:19:56More left.
00:19:56They're just testing you.
00:19:58They want to see if you really care.
00:20:00See if I care.
00:20:00They weren't even looking at me.
00:20:02Well, one of them was, but I think he was picturing me in a dark alley.
00:20:04We have to turn this.
00:20:05Ow.
00:20:06Ow.
00:20:07Ow.
00:20:08Do these legs come out?
00:20:09All right.
00:20:11I think it looks good right there.
00:20:13You know, school's supposed to be exciting.
00:20:15Okay.
00:20:17Now you sound like one of those dumbass commercials that used to come on at the cartoons on Saturday morning.
00:20:21So what?
00:20:21You didn't like school?
00:20:23School sucked.
00:20:24I hated it.
00:20:25Yeah, well, if I was your teacher, you would have loved it.
00:20:34Ron, just relax.
00:20:36Step away from the table.
00:20:37Yeah, that's what I was doing.
00:20:48So now that you helped me move, I guess I have to be your drive-you-to-the-airport, feed-your-fish-never-forget-your-birthday kind of friend.
00:20:55Uh, not to mention my cover-my-weekend shift because I'm going to L.A. with Jason Friend.
00:20:58He's going to meet some producers, you know, he's trying to get out of the daytime heartthrob thing.
00:21:05So how long have you two been going out?
00:21:09Almost two years.
00:21:12Oh.
00:21:12I mean, we're not living together or anything.
00:21:16He's busy, I'm busy.
00:21:19But it's good.
00:21:20Yeah, it sounds good.
00:21:24All right, well, we got three hours before our shift.
00:21:26Who's hungry?
00:21:27Oh, so you're a union mover.
00:21:29This is going to cost me a pizza, huh?
00:21:30Can I have your attention, please?
00:21:36Before we start today, I would like to go over three rules for this class.
00:21:41If you follow them, we will all have a lot of fun.
00:21:44If you do not follow them, there will be consequences.
00:21:50You all remember rule number one, we are a family.
00:21:55Give me a damn break, man.
00:21:57We're not in kindergarten.
00:21:58That means we help each other out.
00:22:01We stand up for each other.
00:22:02We defend each other.
00:22:05Rule number two, we respect each other.
00:22:10Hey, you will call me sir.
00:22:14Not man, not dog, not fool.
00:22:16If you are asked a question, you will say yes, sir, or no, sir.
00:22:20Not yep, nope, uh-uh, nuh-uh.
00:22:24Uh, nuh-uh, fool.
00:22:25Respect Julio Vasquez.
00:22:28You will not talk unless I call on you.
00:22:30If I am talking, you are listening with your eyes right here.
00:22:36Rule number three, we will form a line to enter and exit class and go to lunch.
00:22:43Come on.
00:22:44Are you kidding me?
00:22:46Shamika?
00:22:47What?
00:22:49What, sir?
00:22:52Oh, Shamika, thank you.
00:22:54For what?
00:22:55Reminding me about rule number four.
00:22:57No smacking of lips and rolling of the eyes.
00:23:00If you break one of these rules, your name will go up on the board.
00:23:05So stupid.
00:23:07If you break another rule, you will get a check.
00:23:11Come on.
00:23:12If you break a third rule.
00:23:14Oh!
00:23:15Oh!
00:23:16What's the look like here?
00:23:17Hey.
00:23:22Hmm.
00:23:23Hi.
00:23:25What you reading?
00:23:27Nothing.
00:23:30I didn't read that book till high school.
00:23:32Don't you read that seventh, man.
00:23:36It's five, ten to one.
00:23:38That's big bucks, man.
00:23:39That's big bucks.
00:23:40What's Julio doing?
00:23:42I'll tell you, man.
00:23:43Why are you opening the board?
00:23:44Taking bets.
00:23:46On you.
00:23:48On me?
00:23:48It's okay.
00:23:48I'm telling you, last guy was...
00:23:49When you're gonna quit.
00:23:52I'm supposed to say he's gonna be gone by Friday.
00:23:54Gambling is illegal.
00:23:55Especially when you're 12.
00:23:57And by the way, I'm not leaving.
00:24:00Yo, come on, Doc.
00:24:01I'm supposed to make some paper out of you.
00:24:04Boy, something smells really good in here.
00:24:06Could I ask a favor of you ladies?
00:24:08I just wanted to, you know, if...
00:24:11Dr. King talked about justice rolling down like waters.
00:24:14Here, pass this around, guys.
00:24:15And righteousness like a mighty stream.
00:24:19It's like on a hot day when you go outside and whoosh!
00:24:23Somebody opens up a fire hydrant and there's water streaming all over the place.
00:24:26And everybody's running around and going crazy.
00:24:29That's what Dr. King wanted justice and freedom to feel like.
00:24:34So, tonight, after we've gone over Dr. King's speech, I want you all to start a journal about your dreams and aspirations.
00:24:47Hey, man, it's luck.
00:24:48What's up?
00:24:49Rule number three.
00:24:51We all line up to go to the lunchroom.
00:24:53You know what?
00:24:56Here's my rule.
00:24:57I ain't standing no line.
00:25:00Oh, okay, Shamika.
00:25:02But, because we are all a family, if one of us doesn't get in line for the lunchroom, then none of us gets lunch.
00:25:08Aww!
00:25:09Aww!
00:25:10Aww!
00:25:13Mr. Arm, we're stark.
00:25:15Shhh!
00:25:16We're toast.
00:25:18Don't do it.
00:25:23Very quietly.
00:25:27Two lines right up against the wall.
00:25:30Looks good.
00:25:32That's good.
00:25:33Nice and quiet.
00:25:35Oh, looks like somebody's not hungry.
00:25:41Stop fighting.
00:25:42Let's go.
00:25:47No talking.
00:25:54And stop.
00:25:59Shamika, did you cut in line?
00:26:01No, sir, I did not.
00:26:05You do know that I have eyes in the back of my head, right?
00:26:07I was here. Ask her.
00:26:11Stupid.
00:26:15All right, we're all going to stand here until Shamika decides to tell the truth.
00:26:23I didn't cut in no line.
00:26:30Hey, you're in Mr. Clark's class. No food.
00:26:32Come on, Mr. Clark. I'm starving, man. I'm about to faint out and fall down.
00:26:41Julio, get to the back of the line.
00:26:43And take that hat off.
00:26:48It's up to you whether we eat or not.
00:26:57Shamika, this is a family.
00:26:58And families treat each other with respect.
00:27:02They never, ever lie to one another.
00:27:08Did you cut in line?
00:27:13Come on, me. Come on, let's go.
00:27:19We are all just waiting
00:27:23on you.
00:27:28Yeah.
00:27:35Now, what is rule number five?
00:27:38No cutting in line.
00:27:41That's right. Now go eat.
00:27:44Have some time.
00:27:47I'm proud of you.
00:27:48Thanks a lot.
00:27:49Thanks for nothing.
00:27:50Thanks for having me.
00:27:50Thanks for having me.
00:27:51We're all starting now.
00:27:53Uh-huh.

00:27:58Yeah, I know there's a job for me back home,
00:28:00but things are going very well here.
00:28:03Well, it took the kids a little while to warm up to me.
00:28:07Yeah.
00:28:09Honestly, we are getting along great.
00:28:10We're getting along great.
00:28:10So,

00:29:23I was hoping we could have fun this year,
00:29:27and I think that we still can,
00:29:29but only after you learn to follow all of my rules.
00:29:35And you will follow all of my rules.
00:29:40First of all, he a freak.
00:29:44Take your seats.
00:29:46Call me sir.

00:29:49Telling us how to do this and do that.
00:29:52Making us walk around in a damn line.
00:29:54He ain't my daddy.
00:29:55He could be your daddy.
00:29:56You don't know.

00:30:20That's because you're from a foreign country,
00:30:22and you don't know how we do here.
00:30:24How do we do?
00:30:28Do like us, baby.
00:30:30You want to be like us?

00:42:14Ready, set, go.
00:42:25Come on, man.
00:42:26You ain't dancing, you're jumping.
00:42:28Oh, come on now.
00:42:29I'm about at that time.
00:42:42Hey, hey, Mr. Turner, this is fun.
00:42:56You really think it's appropriate to do this with the students?
00:42:59Well, I'm certainly not gonna double-dutch with you.
00:43:07I am.
00:43:08The year's half over.
00:43:10I gave you this class so you could drill some famous facts into their heads.
00:43:13These kids are at the bottom of the barrel.
00:43:15Don't talk about them like that.
00:43:17Now, all I'm asking is for your students to pass.
00:43:20Oh, every one of my students will pass.
00:43:22What?
00:43:23I'm not gonna pass.
00:43:24They can become somebody else's problems.
00:43:26The problem isn't the kids.
00:43:28It's not even what they can achieve.
00:43:29The problem is what you expect them to achieve.
00:43:33You are setting the bar here.
00:43:35Why? Set it up here. They can make it.
00:43:37This community judges us by scores.
00:43:39Government funding judges us by scores.
00:43:41Government funding judges us by scores.
00:43:42People who give me scores, they get my respect.
00:43:44Okay, good.
00:43:45In May, they'll all test at grade level.
00:43:48I don't see how this is possible.
00:43:50No, I'm sorry. Did I say grade level?
00:43:52I meant above grade level.
00:43:54Every single one of those kids in that class just wants your respect.
00:43:57Hell, I want your respect.
00:43:59You want my respect?
00:44:00Stop acting like a 12-year-old.
00:44:02I always wanted to go rock climbing, but there I was on the edge of this cliff, ropes on me, and my friends are yelling,
00:44:12Jump! Jump! Jump! Jump!
00:44:14And I look down, and it is a long way down.
00:44:19So I'm on the cliff, and I'm yelling, I can't! I can't! I can't!
00:44:23And my friends are yelling, Yes, you can! You can do it!
00:44:25Jump! Jump! Jump!
00:44:26And I did.
00:44:27I thought I was going to die, but when I jumped out, it felt like I was flying.
00:44:39I did something that I never thought I could do, and it was pretty cool.
00:44:44Now, you guys may not know this, but in this classroom, we're rock climbing every day.
00:44:49We are climbing up and up and up, and we are there, and now it's time to jump.
00:44:57Now, I know you're scared, but I want you to do it.
00:45:01I want you to jump.
00:45:03I want you guys to feel what it's like to fly.
00:45:10So, I want each of you to come up here and light one of these candles.
00:45:16Okay, come on up, guys.
00:45:19And when you light a candle, it symbolizes that we are joined together.
00:45:24And if you trust me, you can learn more than you ever dreamed of.
00:45:31And that's a promise.
00:45:33So,
00:45:54how are you holding on?
00:45:55The Revolutionary War, Industrialism, the Civil War, the Civil Rights Movement.
00:46:13I want you all to get the great big picture of American history.
00:46:19That's why this year we're going to learn all 42 presidents of the United States in order.
00:46:25No, no, no. Once you know the president, it'll be easy to remember what and when.
00:46:44Oh, come on.
00:46:55None of you passed the test and there is going to be punishment.
00:47:05I want you to pass these all around.
00:47:08Now let's get down to some presidential lunch.
00:47:32We'll start with George Washington, straight from Mount Vernon.
00:47:35First president and commander-in-chief fought the Revolutionary War so we could be free.
00:47:40John Adams was second, Thomas Jefferson third.
00:47:43When we fought for independence, their voices were heard.
00:47:46When in the course of human events, we took a stand and we've been doing it since.
00:47:51It's a tribute to the leaders of the USA.
00:47:55It's a president's rap.
00:47:57All right, all right.
00:47:58Okay, okay.
00:48:06It's a tribute to the leaders of the USA.
00:48:10It's a president's rap.
00:48:12It's a president's rap.
00:48:13All right, all right.
00:48:15Okay, okay.
00:48:16All right, back to your seats.
00:48:30Back, back, back to your seats, please.
00:48:33It's a president's rap.
00:48:35All right, all right.
00:48:36Okay, okay.
00:48:39R to the O to the nizzle.
00:48:42R to the O to the nizzle.
00:48:44R to the Rizzle.
00:48:45R to the O to the O to the nizzle.
00:48:50Where, Kizzle?
00:48:51Thank you, Mr. Clark.
00:48:52This is my first A.
00:48:54You've got an A.
00:48:55Good job.
00:48:58Should we meet, Kizzle?
00:48:59Thank you, Mr. Clark.
00:49:03Yo, I've never told you.
00:49:04Oh, my God, you've got an A, too.
00:49:06Straight up.
00:49:07Now, give it up for your sizzle selves.
00:49:10It's okay to be proud of yourself for doing well on a test.
00:49:18Come on, come on, let's go.
00:49:21Oh, my God.
00:49:21So, you've got number 13, right?
00:49:23Can you hold up for a minute?
00:49:26I wanted to ask a favor of you.
00:49:33Me?
00:49:34Could you have to your pockets, please?
00:49:37I believe this constitutes an illegal search, sir.
00:49:40Right on the desk.
00:49:41That morning, at your house, your mother's purse?
00:50:01No, no, you see, you got it all wrong.
00:50:03Me and her have this deal, you know?
00:50:04I take care of her, and she takes care of me.
00:50:07You see?
00:50:08No, I don't.
00:50:09But you're about to tell me that crime doesn't pay.
00:50:12Sometimes it costs, and in this case, three one-hour study sessions with me.
00:50:24I mean, for real, you should be working for us, little brother.
00:50:27Hey, see, make yourself some easy money, man.
00:50:30I got enough trouble.
00:50:32Man don't care about no kid.
00:50:34He's too busy to take you down to, I'm telling you.
00:50:36Hey, Sean!
00:50:42He at 5O sign?
00:50:43What's up?
00:50:43Nah, nah, man, he ain't no police.
00:50:44He's just some fool, man.
00:50:45I'll handle it.
00:50:46Don't worry, y'all.
00:50:46I got this.
00:50:47There's some fool in a suit.
00:50:48It's Ronald.
00:50:49Trust that.
00:50:57You okay?
00:50:59Yeah, I'm cool.
00:51:00I wanted to bring you this.
00:51:10Here.
00:51:14You could bring up your math and English with some extra help.
00:51:17Tomorrow's Saturday, I could meet you at the coffee shop by the school.
00:51:20I'll buy you lunch.
00:51:29I'll be there at noon.
00:51:31Noon.
00:51:39Can I take that now?
00:51:42Daddy didn't show up.
00:51:58Here I am.
00:51:59Not even two o'clock.
00:52:00I'm early, sir.
00:52:01Down for study session numero tres.
00:52:03Okay.
00:52:14Okay.
00:52:15Then we get three cards up on the fly.
00:52:18And then we get another two cards up.
00:52:20Okay, so that's five cards up.
00:52:21Can you add those for me?
00:52:23Yeah, we gotta bet first.
00:52:24I bet five fake dollars.
00:52:27Well, I'll call.
00:52:31And that's 36.
00:52:33That's good.
00:52:35Now, what's the square root of that?
00:52:38Oh, square root.
00:52:39Okay, I think the square root is...
00:52:41What number, multiplied by itself, gives you 36?
00:52:47Uh...
00:52:48Six?
00:52:49That's good.
00:52:51So what you got?
00:52:53Pair of sevens.
00:52:54Well, I guess I get all the chips.
00:52:56Because I got three cents.
00:52:57Oh, pay up, dog.
00:52:59Wanna go again?
00:53:00Yeah, sure.
00:53:01You all right?
00:53:01Shemeika Wallace, didn't we have an appointment after school today?
00:53:11It must have slipped my mind.
00:53:13We have to talk about you turning in your homework.
00:53:16I told you.
00:53:17The fire alarm keeps going off in my building.
00:53:19Three times this week?
00:53:21I get busy.
00:53:22Forget.
00:53:29Last night, I just didn't do a good enough job.
00:53:32Would you like to show me your homework?
00:53:34I'm sure I can help you with it.
00:53:46This is really close.
00:53:48We can fix this.
00:53:50Yeah?
00:53:52For reals?
00:53:53Sure, we can work on it right now.
00:53:55There's a few spelling mistakes.
00:53:56And just arrange some of the paragraphs different...
00:53:59Yeah.
00:54:01I can't work on my paper right now.
00:54:19I gotta go make dinner.
00:54:21I'll do it.
00:54:23You'll do what?
00:54:24I'll make dinner and you work on your paper.
00:54:26Okay?
00:54:28Okay.
00:54:28You start with the third paragraph.
00:54:30Okay.
00:54:30Hi.
00:54:32Okay.
00:54:33Where's the food?
00:54:39Dinner's served.
00:54:40I'm trying to concentrate.
00:54:42Concentrate later.
00:54:43Dinner's served.
00:54:43I tried like you said.
00:54:47I moved the third paragraph and it sounds really good.
00:54:51Okay.
00:54:52Now, that's for you.
00:54:53And who gets the baby food?
00:54:55Peter.
00:54:56Okay.
00:54:56You're gonna like this.
00:54:57This looks really good.
00:54:58Ooh.
00:54:59Ooh.
00:55:00Ooh.
00:55:00Ooh.
00:55:01Ooh.
00:55:01Ooh.
00:55:02Ooh.
00:55:02Ooh.
00:55:03Ooh.
00:55:03What's he doing here?
00:55:05He made us dinner.
00:55:08You don't think I can take care of my family, Mr. Clark?
00:55:13No.
00:55:14Yes.
00:55:19Please.
00:55:21Leave my house.
00:55:21I come home to find him in my kitchen, cooking for my family.
00:55:41This girl has a job to do.
00:55:42Miss Wallace, can we please not talk about Shamika like she's not in the room?
00:55:45I'll talk any way I want.
00:55:47Now, I send my daughter to school to be educated.
00:55:49I don't expect a teacher to bring school up in my house.
00:55:51It's called homework.
00:55:53Excuse me?
00:55:54She has too much of it to be babysitting all the time.
00:55:57Mr. Clark.
00:55:58Shamika has more potential than any kid in my class.
00:56:01Why can't you see that?
00:56:03How dare you?
00:56:04How are you gonna tell me what I should and should not see in my daughter?
00:56:08I'm merely suggesting that you give her a chance.
00:56:14I'm taking my child home now.
00:56:16The white tornado here better not be teaching at this school when I bring her back tomorrow.
00:56:19Well, Miss Wallace, I can assure you, I will deal with this situation.
00:56:23Come on, Shamika.
00:56:25Please don't fire Mr. Clark.
00:56:29He was just trying to help me, Mama.
00:56:32He was just trying to help.
00:56:34It's okay.
00:56:35Please don't leave because of me, Mr. Clark.
00:56:55Miss Wallace, wait.
00:56:57I'll meet you outside.
00:56:59Why are you doing this?
00:57:00You gave her these grand ideas and this girl is just gonna crush her down.
00:57:04I don't believe that.
00:57:05So you're just gonna drop into our life and now you know all about it, right?
00:57:08I just know she's a great student.
00:57:10A born leader.
00:57:11Creative, intelligent.
00:57:14Shamika.
00:57:16My Shamika.
00:57:16Yes.
00:57:18If she tests well enough in May, I think we might be able to get her into Manhattan West
00:57:21for middle school.
00:57:24That's for gifted kids.
00:57:25Yes.
00:57:25Yes.
00:57:25Oh, maybe Mrs. Benton can keep the boys a little longer every day.
00:57:38Okay.
00:57:40Okay.
00:57:44Okay.
00:57:45Okay.
00:57:55Good morning, Mr. Clark.
00:57:58Good morning.
00:57:59Good morning, Mr. Clark.
00:58:02I'm Mr. Clark.
00:58:05What way don't you do this?
00:58:06Good morning, Mr. Clark.
00:58:08You like it, Mr. Clark?
00:58:10That's really good.
00:58:11You got quite a talent for this.
00:58:13Well, it's one of my minis, dog.
00:58:17Sir.
00:58:18Thanks.
00:58:19Good morning.
00:58:20Good morning.
00:58:25Yo, what up, Tay?
00:58:42Don't you like me, Mr. Clark?
00:58:44Yeah, man, don't hate on me because I got skills.
00:58:46Skills?
00:58:47You mean being a straight-up punk?
00:58:48You real good at that?
00:58:51Yo, come on, Tay.
00:58:51Just chill out.
00:58:52You telling me to chill, homie?
00:58:53You telling me to chill?
00:58:55Come on, man.
00:58:56I mean, Mr. Clark likes that art crap, okay?
00:58:58So he thought I did it, and I just went with it.
00:59:03Don't turn around.
00:59:04I'm not going to do anything, man.
00:59:06I'm sorry.
00:59:18Superintendent Stevens has joined us
00:59:19to determine if Tayshon Mitchell
00:59:21should be expelled from Inner Harlem Elementary.
00:59:23I vote yes.
00:59:25Send him to juvie.
00:59:27This isn't a democracy, Mr. Brampton.
00:59:29Howard, would you let Mr. Turner finish what he was saying?
00:59:32You're his foster parent.
00:59:34You got the say here.
00:59:37We don't need his lazy ass around the house all day.
00:59:39What did you just say?
00:59:40Look, if we expel him, he's only going to fall further behind.
00:59:50Mr. Clark, our students can't simply do what they want with no consequences.
00:59:54What about the consequences for Tayshon?
00:59:56We are supposed to be keeping these kids in school.
01:00:01That's all.
01:00:02Just take a step back.
01:00:03Remember that I have eyes in the back of my head, so stop fighting.
01:00:09This is not a test.
01:00:15This is my phone number.
01:00:17I want you guys to call me if you have any questions about homework,
01:00:21need any advice, or you are in trouble.
01:00:25That's 24-7.
01:00:29Pick up your math workbooks at the front of the class,
01:00:31and we have a book report due tomorrow.
01:00:41Remember, there are two variables in this equation, okay?
01:00:44So, x equals, x, x equals, come on, Tayshon, you can do this.
01:00:49Yo, not what you're all up on me, man!
01:00:58x equals three-eighths!
01:01:00Yes, yes!
01:01:01Oh, that's great.
01:01:02Just keep doing it like that.
01:01:03Just keep doing it like that.
01:01:30This doesn't sound good.
01:01:36How long you been this way?
01:01:38A week, maybe more.
01:01:40Well, you have pneumonia.
01:01:41I can send you home, but you'd be confined to bed rest for two weeks.
01:01:45Minimal.
01:01:46Yeah, I can't do that.
01:01:48Or I can admit you to the hospital right now, Mr. Clark.
01:01:51Okay, everybody, take your seats.
01:02:18Mr. Clark, you look really white.
01:02:23Yeah, even more than usual.
01:02:26We have four...
01:02:28four weeks.
01:02:32Now, I know that doesn't seem like a lot of time,
01:02:34but if we work really hard,
01:02:36I know we're gonna do great on these exams.
01:02:38So, let's go over our science topics from last week.
01:02:45Who knows those?
01:02:51Magnetism, chemical reactions, and gravity.
01:02:54Okay, good.
01:02:55Gravity.
01:02:56Gravity is important because...
01:03:00Okay, we get it, Mr. Clark.
01:03:08Gravity makes you fall down.
01:03:17Mr. Clark?
01:03:20Mr. Clark?
01:03:20I won't!
01:03:22Easy.
01:03:28Ready?
01:03:28I hope he's all right.
01:03:36I hope he's all right.
01:03:56Okay, you want me?
01:03:57Yeah.
01:03:57Very nice of Jason, so let me borrow the camera.
01:04:02Oh, he's happy to help.
01:04:03How much are we taping?
01:04:04Four hours.
01:04:06Four hours?
01:04:07Every day?
01:04:08Yeah, kids need it.
01:04:10It'll go quick.
01:04:12For you.
01:04:15Hey, Marissa.
01:04:22Wait, come over here.
01:04:23Come over here.
01:04:23We can't have our Mr. Clark looking all sloppy now, can we?
01:04:33You know, a guy could get used to this.
01:04:38Come on, seats are ready.
01:04:42Okay, now just because I'm on this videotape doesn't mean that I can't see you.
01:04:45Belita, here's that gun.
01:04:52All right, is everybody ready?
01:04:54Yes, sir.
01:04:55Yes, sir.
01:04:56Gravity.
01:04:58The force of attraction between two objects.
01:05:00That is gravity.
01:05:06Now, according to the definition of gravity, why did the egg fall?
01:05:10Because.
01:05:10And no, Julio, it's not because the egg and the floor are hot for each other.
01:05:14The egg fell because the force of the mass and the distance between the egg and the floor caused the reaction.
01:05:25Okay, now, get out your workbooks because I have to clean my floor.
01:05:29Good morning, Mr. Clark.
01:05:44Good morning, Tisha.
01:05:45You have my kids' homework?
01:05:50Good to have you back.
01:05:54That's not true.
01:05:55Yes, it is.
01:05:56I want my CD back and my money fixed.
01:05:58Why are you playing?
01:05:59I gave that CD back.
01:06:00No, you didn't.
01:06:01It's not, I did.
01:06:02You're always doing it.
01:06:03It's Mr. Clark.
01:06:04You can't just...
01:06:28You hear what I'm, Mr. C.
01:06:39You tell me.
01:06:44You guys have one week till the state exams.
01:06:47One week to show Mr. Turner and your parents and yourselves what you can do.
01:06:58You guys don't have anything you want to tell me?
01:07:00There's no way we're going to pass those tests.
01:07:07We always mess up.
01:07:09Don't jump on us, man.
01:07:10Sir.
01:07:12I mean, it's nothing personal.
01:07:13Everything we do in this room is personal.
01:07:17How we talk to each other, how we work together, and how we've prepared for these tests.
01:07:22But we're way behind now.
01:07:25We're not behind.
01:07:27You're ahead.
01:07:29Everyone thinks we're losers, Mr. Clark.
01:07:33No.
01:07:35You are not losers.
01:07:37These rules, they represent everything you've accomplished this year.
01:07:52Discovering new things.
01:07:55Believing in each other and believing in yourselves.
01:08:01And I'm proud of you.
01:08:05Compared to all that, this test, pfft.
01:08:08It's nothing.
01:08:10But Mr. Clark, we have to get certain grades to graduate, right?
01:08:15So what if we, you know, choke?
01:08:18But you're not going to choke.
01:08:22You guys didn't work hard all this year just to get ready for some tests.
01:08:28Every day in this room, we are learning things far more valuable than you can get in some book.
01:08:37I teach you.
01:08:44And you teach me.
01:08:48And together we learn to love to learn.
01:08:51So, next week, you're going to take that test.
01:09:03You're going to do the best that you can do.
01:09:05And you are going to walk out of that room and know that you can do anything you want for the rest of your lives.
01:09:10All right, tomorrow is the big day, but don't worry.
01:09:25You know the material backwards and forwards.
01:09:28So, just get a good night's sleep and, you know, good luck.
01:09:32Federia, can I talk to you for one minute?
01:09:34And Tayshaun, can you wait for me at the door, please?
01:09:36I know that it's been hard for you to fit in.
01:09:44But you can be smart and still be cool.
01:09:48In fact, you're so smart and cool, you can do anything you want to do.
01:09:53I want to be a doctor.
01:09:54Okay, good.
01:09:58You better kick some butt on that test then, doctor.
01:10:03Thank you, Mr. Clark.
01:10:04Good luck.
01:10:07Tayshaun!
01:10:13Yo, kid, get it done.
01:10:15You know what I'm saying?
01:10:16Do this.
01:10:16All right.
01:10:17Hey, what up, T?
01:10:18Yo, little brother, where you been, man?
01:10:20We've been looking for you.
01:10:21Hey, yo, you forgot what's up?
01:10:22We check it.
01:10:23We got some goods.
01:10:23We got to move now.
01:10:24Come on.
01:10:25It's raining, dude.
01:10:25Come on.
01:10:31Hey.
01:10:32Look, you can't be in and not roll.
01:10:36I can't be like that, son.
01:10:38I was thinking maybe we could walk to school together.
01:10:41We can do a last-minute review of the test on the way.
01:10:46Yo, you're going this way or going that way, payaso?
01:10:48Which way?
01:10:49Come on.
01:10:52That way.
01:10:58Come on.
01:11:07Okay.
01:11:08So, when you get to the math section...
01:11:13Ready?
01:11:15Go get him.
01:11:15Good morning.
01:11:31Do not open your test booklets until I tell you to begin.
01:11:35Keep your eyes on your own paper.
01:11:37Remember, when you've chosen your answer, fill in the corresponding answer bubble completely
01:11:42with a number two pencil.
01:11:45If you require an additional pencil, please raise your hand and one will be provided.
01:11:52Do your best.
01:11:55And no talking.
