00:04Director's Reflections for Sunday, June 29, 2025.
00:08Hinged journalists. True or false?
00:11This is the current dilemma for millions when consuming news on social media and digital platforms.
00:17Faced with the avalanche of misinformation and synthetic content,
00:20the public is asking, how can we distinguish what is verifiable from what is misleading?
00:25This skepticism explains why 40% of people actively avoid the news,
00:30a figure that has remained stable over the past two years.
00:34The fear of falsehood fuels distrust, aggravated by post-truth and fake news.
00:39Paradoxically, traditional media, print, radio, TV, remain the most trusted due to their rigor and transparency.
00:47However, they are losing audiences to social media,
00:49where 71% of young people under 35 prefer to get their information from these sources,
00:56according to the Oxford Reuters Digital News Report 2025.
01:00Why, then, are platforms with less veracity triumphing?
01:04This is where so-called alternative journalism is emerging,
01:07in which influencers and creators on TikTok, YouTube or Facebook
01:11capture massive audiences with news content.
01:14The divorce between credibility and consumption reveals a crisis of relevance, not quality.
01:19Rigid formats, slowness to adapt to digital narratives,
01:23and emotional distance from new audiences have turned rigor into an invisible strength.
01:28Meanwhile, alternative creators master the art of empathetic immediacy,
01:33simplifying complexities and using generational codes.
01:37Verification tools are only a patch if they are not accompanied by critical digital literacy.
01:42Artificial intelligence now generates personalized news that reinforces biases,
01:47creating bubbles where the plausible displaces the verified.
01:51It is urgent to teach distrust, even of what seems technically perfect.
01:56This intersection between tradition and innovation demands hinged journalists,
02:00professionals who preserve reporting ethics but master microformats,
02:05explosive podcasts, viral threads, fact-checking on reels.
02:09Examples such as El Pais explaining geopolitics on Twitch,
02:13or the BBC debunking hoaxes with memes demonstrate that rigor can be a trend.
02:18To future journalists, I say,
02:21you are the first generation trained in and for this hybrid ecosystem.
02:25Your mission is twofold,
02:27to demand algorithmic transparency from platforms
02:30and to humanize data in traditional media.
02:33The truth is not in retreating to the ivory tower or surrendering to the easy click,
02:38but in building bridges of credibility with boots on the ground in both worlds.
