00:00You make me feel like a natural woman.
00:03I think I just became the first president ever to say that.
00:11Ladies and gentlemen, please welcome Secretary of State John Kerry.
00:19Whether you danced to her music in the 60s
00:23or were first enthralled by the gorgeous poetry
00:27and the incomparable voice of the 70s and later,
00:32whether you know her from a distance
00:34or as Teresa and I have been privileged to be
00:37as a neighbor and a cherished friend,
00:40Carole King has a unique place in all of our hearts.
00:44Believe it or not, Carole King was 17
00:47when she wrote her first number one song.
00:50And she and her partner, Jerry Goffin,
00:52who you've heard referred to earlier,
00:54turned out so many gold hits
00:57that another pair of songwriters admitted
00:59that all they ever wanted was to be like Goffin and King.
01:05And that is pretty high praise
01:07coming from a couple of guys from Liverpool
01:09named John Lennon and Paul McCartney.
01:12So now, my friends, let's take a journey.
01:15Let's turn back the clock to 1971,
01:20head up the turnpike to Carnegie Hall
01:22and watch this absolutely magnificent artist
01:25in one of her many legendary performances.
01:28Please welcome the Broadway cast of Beautiful,
01:33the Carole King musical.
01:39So far away
01:43Doesn't anybody stay in one place anymore
01:49This is probably a sure way
02:01to get applause in New York,
02:03but I was born in Brooklyn.
02:09And being here at Carnegie Hall
02:11is a dream come true,
02:12not only for me,
02:13but for my mother.
02:14The dream of my mother's life
02:17was for me to play Carnegie Hall.
02:19Of course, she hoped that I'd play
02:21Mozart's Piano Sonata No. 3
02:23in B-flat major
02:24instead of Smackwater Jack.
02:26But I like all music,
02:29and I always have.
02:31I started playing piano
02:32as soon as I could reach the keys.
02:37That is my mom.
02:38She taught me to play.
02:39She never had to make me practice.
02:42I loved it so much.
02:44And after a while,
02:45I started making up my own songs.
02:47At 16,
02:49I convinced my mom and dad
02:50to let me go to New York City
02:52to audition for any music producer
02:54that would listen.
02:55At my second stop,
02:57I sold my first song.
02:59But my career didn't exactly take off.
03:02People thought I needed help
03:03with my lyrics.
03:04I was going to Queens College
03:23at the time,
03:24and just my luck,
03:25I met a guy there
03:26who wrote lyrics.
03:28This guy, Jerry Goffin.
03:31He was the handsomest boy there,
03:33maybe anywhere.
03:35Oh, I remember everything
03:36about the first time we met.
03:38I was wearing this dress,
03:40and he told me he needed a song
03:42for a play he'd written.
03:44Well, when I told him
03:45that I wrote music,
03:46he showed me his lyrics.
03:47What do you think?
03:50My God, they're incredible.
03:52Yes, I'd love to write a song with you.
03:54Great.
03:56Wow.
03:57You have a beautiful smile.
03:59I do?
04:01Oh, I can't see it from in here.
04:03You know, we could do more
04:06than write together.
04:07Have I told you the title of my play?
04:10No, what?
04:11The Young Lovers.
04:13You know, as a writer,
04:14I feel research is the best way
04:16to understand my characters.
04:18So, getting to know you
04:19in a more intimate way
04:20would really help us.
04:22Um, we probably shouldn't.
04:25I always hear people shouldn't mix
04:28the personal and the profession.
04:32Who knew?
04:33I love research.
04:37Pretty soon, we had a song.
04:40And then a bunch of songs.
04:42And we had the most wonderful people
04:44singing them.
04:44People like Tony Orlando,
04:46The Drifters,
04:47The Chiffons,
04:48And The Shirelles.
04:54Ladies and gentlemen,
04:56Janelle Monae.
04:59Tonight you're mine
05:01Completely
05:03You give your love
05:08So sweetly
05:12Tonight
05:13The light
05:16Of the love
05:17Is in your eyes
05:19Will you still love me
05:23Tomorrow
05:24Will you still love me
05:30Tomorrow
05:33Tonight
05:40We celebrate an amazing woman
05:43Miss Carol King
05:44We love you
05:45Woo!
05:50One by day
05:53She will look at me
05:55And you will know
05:57All that was
05:58Made to be
06:00One by day
06:03You're gonna want me
06:06For your girl
06:07She will do it
06:08For your girl
06:09She will do it
06:10Listen
06:11Oh, I know
06:14You're the kind of boy
06:17Who only wants to run around
06:21But I'll be waiting
06:25One by day
06:26One day
06:27Darling
06:28You'll come to me
06:30When you want to settle down
06:33One by day
06:36You're gonna want me
06:38For your girl
06:39Oh, your girl
06:42For your girl
06:45She will do it
06:46For your girl
06:48She will do it
06:49For your girl
06:49She will do it
06:51For your girl
06:51Things happen pretty fast
07:01After that
07:01We got married
07:02And I got pregnant
07:03Well, actually
07:05I got pregnant
07:06And then we got married
07:07But
07:08But we told it to my dad
07:09The other way
07:10Louise came first
07:13And then Sherry
07:14We got a place
07:15In New Jersey
07:16On a street
07:17Called Pleasant Valley Way
07:18And because we were
07:19Working so much
07:20We hired a babysitter
07:21To help with the kids
07:23And turned out
07:24She helped with the music too
07:26Her name
07:27Was Little Eva
07:28Everybody's still doing
07:30A brand new dance time
07:32Come on, baby
07:34To the local show
07:36I know you'll get to like it
07:37If you give it a chance now
07:39Come on, baby
07:41To the local show
07:43We commuted every day
07:45To 1650 Broadway
07:47Where we did our writing
07:48This was the home
07:49Of Alden Music
07:50Which was Donnie Kirshner's company
07:52Donnie placed our songs
07:54With the right groups
07:55And always pushed us
07:56To keep turning out
07:57Great stuff
07:58Fast
07:59I mean it
08:00I mean it
08:01These are great lyrics
08:03How did you even think of this?
08:05When I was growing up
08:06Our apartment
08:08Was not a happy place to be
08:09My dad wasn't getting
08:11What he wanted
08:12Out of life
08:13And he often
08:13Had these moods
08:14I didn't know
08:16How to deal with those
08:17So I used to do this
08:18And as soon as
08:19I got up there
08:20It all got better
08:21Ladies and gentlemen
08:24James Taylor
08:25When the soul
08:32Starts to getting me down
08:35And people are just too much
08:38For me to face
08:41I want to climb up to the top of the stairs
08:50And all my cares
08:53It just lives
08:54Right in space
08:57It's peaceful as can be
09:07And there's a world below
09:15It don't bother me
09:16It don't bother me
09:17It don't bother me
09:17No how
09:18Oh no
09:21So when I come home
09:24Feeding tired and beat
09:26I won't go up where the air
09:31Is flesh and sweet
09:32Is flesh and sweet
09:33For you
09:34I'll get far away
09:40From the hustling crowd
09:43And all that rat-free snores
09:46Out in the street
09:51Oh on the roof
09:55That's the only place
09:58That I know
09:59I know
10:00Look at the city
10:02Where you just have to wish
10:07To make it so
10:10Let's go
10:13Up on my roof
10:15Up on my roof
10:21Rubble to the rain
10:27And I climb up the stairs
10:29And be a seedling
10:31What a time we had recording tapestry
10:57Joni Mitchell was recording next door
10:59And she and James came
11:00And sang back up on
11:02Will you love me
11:02My girls would interrupt from home
11:04Call and ask
11:05If they really had to do their homework
11:07We even used our cat
11:08Telemachus
11:09On the cover
11:10I think that feeling
11:13Of friends and family
11:14Really seeped into the album
11:16The winner is Carole King
11:22We've got a plan
11:23Ladies and gentlemen
11:30Sarah Bareilles
11:32When you're down
11:42When you're down
11:42And trouble
11:45And you need a helping hand
11:50And nothing
11:53Nothing is going right
11:58Close your eyes and think of me
12:06Soon I will be there
12:10Soon I will be there
12:10To brighten
12:13Even your darkest night
12:18You just call out my name
12:25And you know wherever I am
12:31I'll come running
12:33I'll come running
12:33To see you again
12:38Into spring, summer, or fall
12:46All you gotta do is call
12:51And I'll be there
12:54And I'll be there
12:55Yes, I will
12:56But it's good to know
12:57It ain't good to know
13:00You've got a friend
13:02People can be so cold
13:06Hurt you and desert you
13:12They'll take your soul if you let them
13:18Don't let them
13:21You just call my name
13:27And you know wherever I am
13:33I'll come running, yes I will
13:37See you again
13:43Winter, spring, summer or fall
13:48All you gotta do is call
13:54And you'll be there, yes I will
13:58You've got a friend
14:02Eventually Jerry and I broke up
14:18Though I am glad to say we stayed friends
14:20And I had to leave Donnie because I moved to LA
14:24But before I left New York
14:27Jerry and I were walking down Broadway
14:29When Jerry Wexler, the co-founder of Atlantic Records
14:32Pulled up in his limo and said he had a song he wanted us to write
14:35It turned out to be the last big hit Jerry and I did together
14:40But what a way to end it
14:42Especially since the woman who sang it
14:45Was one of the great American artists of all time
14:48I would later do a version of it myself on tapestry
14:52But it was different from hers because
14:53Well
14:55There is only one Aretha Franklin
14:58Looking out on the ground
15:00Looking out on the ground
15:28On the morning rain
15:30I used to feel so inspired
15:35When I knew I had to face another day
15:44Oh, it made me feel so talented
15:49Before the day I met you
15:54Before the day I met you
15:56Life was so inclined
15:58But you're the king
16:00To my peace
16:01Of mind
16:02You make me feel
16:06You make me feel
16:09You make me feel
16:12I'm a natural
16:14I'm a natural
16:15I'm a woman
16:17I'm a woman
16:18I'm a woman
16:19I'm a woman
16:21When my soul
16:22Was in the lost and found
16:24Was in the lost and found
16:26I'm not a good man, I'm not a good man
16:31I'm not a good man, I'm not a good man
16:36I didn't know what was wrong with me
16:41Just what was wrong with me
16:43To kill his kiss every day
16:48Now I'm no longer down for what I'm living for
16:55If I make you happy, I don't need you
17:00You make me feel, you make me feel
17:07You make me feel like I'm not natural
17:14I feel like a natural woman again
17:18Oh baby, what you got to be
17:24You make me feel so good inside
17:32And I, I just wanna be
17:36You make me feel, you make me feel like I'm not natural
17:46You make me feel, you make me feel like I'm not natural
17:54You make me feel, you make me feel, you make me feel like I'm not natural
18:04You make me feel, you make me feel like I'm not natural
18:14You make me feel, you make me feel, you make me feel, you make me feel, you make me feel like I'm not natural
18:24You make me feel, you make me feel, you make me feel, you make me feel, you make me feel, you make me feel, you make me feel, you make me feel, you make me feel, you make me feel, you make me feel, you make me feel, you make me feel, you make me feel, you make me feel, you make me feel, you make me feel, you make me feel, you make me feel, you make me feel, you make me feel, you make me feel, you make me feel, you make me feel, you make me feel, you make me feel, you make me feel, you make me feel, you make me feel, you make me feel, you make me feel, you make me feel, you make me feel, you make me feel, you make me feel, you make me feel, you make me feel, you make me feel, you make me feel, you make me feel, you make me feel, you make me feel, you make me feel, you make me feel, you

19:41Oh my God, that is so not necessary.
19:48And again, we thank our honorees.
19:50Your work, your talent, your drive, and your pursuit of artistic excellence is a gift to
19:54the world that we cherish for generations.
19:56And as we say goodnight, let's celebrate with the music of Carole Kane.
20:01I feel the earth move under my feet.
20:06I feel the sky dumbling down.
20:10I feel my heart start to tremble in whenever you're alive.
20:17Ooh, baby.
20:18Ooh, baby.
20:19When I see your face, you fell the last month of May.
20:24Ooh, darling.
20:26I can't stand it.
20:29Will you look at me that way?
20:32I feel the earth move under my feet.
20:37The sky dumbling down, dumbling.
20:40My heart start to tremble in whenever you're alive.
20:52Oh, darling, can you hear me?
20:56And touching me so tenderly.
20:59I know that my emotions will never, ever, ever be free.
21:12Out to the sky, tumbling down
21:15I'm gonna move under my feet
21:20Out to the sky, tumbling down
21:22Tumbling down, tumbling down
21:27Tumbling down, tumbling down
21:31Tumbling down
