00:00When you listen to the Eagles, you hear perfect harmony.
00:04A supergroup whose greatest hits sold more copies in the United States
00:07than any other record in the 20th century.
00:10And the 20th century had some pretty good music.
00:13Ladies and gentlemen, Grammy and Academy Award winner, Ringo Starr.
00:22Good evening, everybody.
00:24I am honored to be here to congratulate the Eagles,
00:27including my brother-in-law, Joe Walsh, who forced me to do this.
00:35And his bandmates, Don Henley, Timothy B. Schmidt, and the late Glenn Frey.
00:48But I'm not going to tell you the story of the Eagles.
00:52I'm going to let you hear it from the woman who was there in the beginning,
00:56Linda Ronstadt.
01:04What can you say about a group of men who created music that transcends time,
01:09that connects one generation with the next?
01:14You can say that they were keen observers of life
01:16who made their stories feel like our own.
01:19Something about them felt familiar.
01:32They looked like us.
01:34They were who we wanted to be.
01:38So how did a country boy from Texas
01:40and a suburban kid from Detroit
01:42find each other at the dawn of their musical journeys?
01:45They went to Mecca.
01:53The Troubadour was the center of our musical universe
01:56and the place I met Glenn Frey, Don Henley,
01:59and a lot of other musicians looking for their next song,
02:03their next paycheck, or their next meal.
02:05I was putting together a touring band and hired Glenn,
02:09a great guitar player with an exquisite vocal range.
02:16And Don was an ideal drummer for a singer like me.
02:19He played simply, understood traditional music,
02:22and was a brilliant vocalist.
02:27On the road, Glenn and Don played and wrote music all night
02:31and made a fateful decision to form their own band.
02:49The 70s arrived with intensity, and so did the Eagles.
02:54Their music was impeccable.
02:56Every note and lyric were considered,
02:57and every song mattered.
03:01Welcome to the Hotel California
03:05And when this epic, seven-minute single
03:09reached number one,
03:11the Eagles had come of age.
03:14Spent the young room at the Hotel California
03:18This song of profound resonance
03:20would become an iconic part of our musical landscape
03:23for the next 40 years.
03:25Joe Walsh infused the Eagles with unrestrained rock and roll.
03:39And Timothy B. Schmidt added a soaring vocal range
03:42that elevated every harmony.
03:48What's it like to be an Eagle now?
03:49It's just part of my life.
04:00We managed to represent that period of time
04:06in the 70s, Southern California,
04:09which was very artistically creative.
04:11I hope that you remember it like the Roaring Twenties are.
04:22We wanted longevity.
04:24It wasn't a hobby for us.
04:26It wasn't a game.
04:27It wasn't a pleasant diversion.
04:29It was a life.
04:31It was a calling.
04:32It was a career.
04:33We set out to become a band for our time.
04:40But sometimes if you do a good enough job,
04:44you become a band for all time.
04:46To my brothers, the Eagles,
04:49forever may you fly.
04:50And now, it's my pleasure
04:59to welcome four times Grammy winners,
05:02Kings of Lyon.
05:03I'm a running down the road
05:22trying to loosen my load
05:23of the seven women on my mind
05:26For the one on me,
05:29the only story was
05:31This is a friend of mine

06:12before
06:13It's going down
06:14and taking a look at me
06:16Come on, baby
06:17Don't say, baby
06:21I gotta know
06:24Yes, sweet love
06:26He's gonna save me
06:28Ramp and lose
06:31And we may win
06:32We will never be here again
06:35So open up
06:37I'm climbing in

18:33Through outrageous bodies
18:35They'd be heavenly pills
18:37They were lines on the mirror
18:40Lines on the face
18:42She pretended not to notice
18:44She was caught up in the rings
18:46Out every evening
18:48Till it was light
