00:00Breanne Diaz is 30 years old and weighs over 600 pounds, and for someone her age, this is not the kind of life she should be living.
00:06Because I feel exhausted in every way, and all I want is to get all of this over with so I can finally eat something.
00:14I'm really miserable. Ready?
00:19Okay.
00:22At this point, food is the only reason I get up.
00:25Just cleaning herself and taking a shower takes so much out of Breanne that she has to spend a considerable amount of time recovering from all the energy that it takes.
00:33And I know as soon as I make it to my recliner, I don't have to get up or do anything else for the rest of the day.
00:40And I can finally rest my body and eat.
00:44Because Rick brings me whatever I want.
00:47And I can't wait for the first bite of something that will make me forget all about the pain and misery of my life.
00:53And the only thing that motivates her to get out of bed and push herself is the thought of sitting down and devouring her favorite meal.
01:21But I know if I push her on it, she's going to get angry.
01:24And we're going to fight.
01:25So I just do it.
01:27Food has caused all the things I hate about myself.
01:31But it's the only thing I've ever had in my life that have helped me deal with the things that have happened to me.
01:36And I don't know where to even begin to change that.
01:39The worst part is that no matter how hard her husband tries to keep Breanne from overindulging in food,
01:44she somehow manages to emotionally manipulate him into doing exactly what she wants.
01:48When I was really young, I didn't really struggle with food.
01:51In my earliest childhood, I was just a happy baby, happy kid.
01:55Things were normal for the most part.
01:57But that changed as I got older.
02:00My dad was in the Air Force, so he was gone a lot.
02:03So my earliest memories are mostly of me and my mom.
02:06And it wasn't until I was five that my dad started being around more.
02:10But that's when my mom had my younger brother.
02:11And then the next year, she had my sister and with two newborns in a year.
02:17I remember it felt like my dad just didn't have time for me.
02:20And as they got older, it seemed like they had this connection that my dad and I didn't have.
02:25And the worst part is that Breanne has been this way for a long time.
02:28Because her addiction to food goes all the way back to her childhood.
02:31And when I was 13, me and my brother and sister all went for a bike ride.
02:36And for some reason, my dad was upset about it.
02:40So we all got sent to our rooms and my brother and sister got a spanking.
02:44And then he came to my room.
02:46And he was just like telling me like I'm an awful person.
02:49Like calling me a bat.
02:52And at that moment, I remember feeling like he really hates me.
02:57When we fought, it felt like it was my whole family against me.
03:01Even with my mom.
03:02Because she never stood up for me or helped.
03:04So around that time is when I started putting on weight.
03:08Because when no one else was there for me, food was.
03:11As a child, Breanne felt neglected and unloved.
03:14And that made her find different ways to deal with her emotions.
03:17Food being one of them.
03:18And I was well over 450 pounds by the time I turned 20.
03:23But my life continued to get even worse from there.
03:27And one night at a party, I met a guy.
03:29And we started sleeping together.
03:31And I wound up pregnant.
03:32At first, I was scared about being pregnant.
03:35And then I was really, really excited.
03:38And I couldn't wait.
03:39I think because there was going to be somebody that would always love me.
03:44But I told my mom that I was pregnant.
03:46And that's basically when my dad cut all ties with me.
03:50And he hasn't spoken to me in about 11 years.
03:53Naturally, as she grew up, Breanne started to rebel.
03:58She would go to parties, drink, and do drugs.
04:01But all of that led her down an extremely dark path.
04:03One that she has still not been able to recover from.
04:05I was really depressed.
04:08And I just wanted to leave.
04:10And my grandparents lived in Vegas.
04:12And so I called them.
04:13And so I asked if I could move in with them.
04:15And they said yes.
04:17And so my mom bought me a plane ticket.
04:19And I left to go to Las Vegas.
04:22But I thought when I moved there that it could be a clean start for me.
04:25I was 21 and getting close to being 500 pounds.
04:29So I know my weight was starting to get out of control.
04:32But my eating didn't slow down.
04:34And I also felt back and departing a lot too.
04:37After getting pregnant and being rejected by the father of her child,
04:40Breanne knew that she needed something to change.
04:42So she decided to pack up and move to a new city.
04:44Hoping that it would help her find some closure and peace.
04:47I was 22 at the time.
04:49And Rick was 52.
04:51But I just fell in love with him.
04:53And I didn't care about the age difference.
04:57And that he had a daughter from a previous marriage named Katrina that he was raising.
05:03In fact, when he introduced me to Katrina, who at the time was 12,
05:06I saw myself in her.
05:09And I wanted her to have somebody to look up to and to love.
05:13And she found way more than just what she was looking for.
05:15She found love.
05:16Despite only being 22 at the time.
05:20I can't keep going like this.
05:21But I can't stop eating.
05:23Food is like what I look forward to every day.
05:26Because it's something that makes me happy.
05:28In a world where I can't go out and be happy.
05:31And what I love about eating is it never lets me down.
05:34And I feel like whatever mood I might have been in before I started eating, it's gone.
05:40But all of her worries stop mattering the minute Breanne starts eating.
05:43As she takes the first bite, she forgets about all the problems in the world.
05:46And the only thing she wants to do is continue eating till it's time for her to sleep.
05:50When I got married to Rick, I wanted to be there for Katrina and be the mom she never had.
05:56But I'm not able to do that because I won't stop eating.
05:59And I'm definitely hurting Rick because he doesn't need the stress of wondering if he's going to wake up and find me dead.
06:07And last year, he actually had a heart attack and had to have open heart surgery.
06:10So having to do as much as he does physically is hard on him.
06:15So I know, I definitely feel like I'm letting my eating habits destroy everything that's precious to me.
06:20But what I'm eating, I just don't care.
06:22Breanne's unhealthy addiction to food and her weight gain is not easy on her loved ones.
06:26But she is too far gone to see how much she is damaging them with her choices.
06:30Me and Rick are packing right now because we're going to Houston to see Dr. Now.
06:33I know I have to do something drastic at this point or I won't be around much longer.
06:39But it's a long trip from Oregon to Houston, so I have to go by plane.
06:45There's just no way I'd make it in a car for that long on the road.
06:49So I'm trying to make this trip as short as possible.
06:53So I've got your ticket, my three tickets.
06:58This is going to be embarrassing.
07:00Thankfully, she decides to head to Houston to meet Dr. Now.
07:03Who might be the only doctor who can help Breanne lose weight with how bad she has gotten.
07:07Tomorrow we'll meet with Dr. Now Zarden.
07:10And then we should be home.
07:13It'll be really, really early Friday morning.
07:15Okay.
07:16So just pray everything goes good with Dr. Now because he's my last shot.
07:19Yeah.
07:21Well, I hope you get approved.
07:23Me too.
07:24I'm pushing myself to do this.
07:26Because I don't want to give up.
07:28No matter how hard or scary this is going to be.
07:30I want to be here for Rick and Katrina.
07:35And losing the weight and getting my life back is the only way I'm going to be able to do that.
07:39But it's all just going to be really hard on me physically.
07:42And while the trip is going to be long and difficult, Breanne knows that she needs to do this if she wants to get better.
07:47There's no other choice, despite going back and forth in just three days.
07:51So how are you feeling, babe?
07:54I'm pretty nervous.
07:56And then I think I'm a little bit worried about getting a wheelchair to the airport.
08:01That's always been a problem for us.
08:03We get somewhere and they're like, yeah, we got wheelchairs.
08:05And they've got like tiny wheelchairs for people that like you can barely sit in.
08:10Let's not, we'll get a baggage cart.
08:13That's not even funny because what if we do?
08:16What if we do have to get a baggage cart?
08:18Jeez, babe.
08:19Her stepdaughter is afraid that she will give up when things start getting a little difficult.
08:25But for now, Breanne seems committed to getting better.
08:28I'm really nervous about a lot of stuff.
08:30And I just hope I can make this trip.
08:32I'm already feeling winded.
08:34And my back and my knees are killing me.
08:36But I'm going to just focus on what I need to do.
08:39And I think about how humiliating it is to have to be pushed through the airport.
08:48I'm in a lot of pain right now.
08:49So I hope I can make it.
08:51But before even getting to the airport, she starts freaking out about how she will move
08:56around and what it will feel like to be out in public where everyone can see and judge
08:59her for how she looks.
09:01Did you want to sit up here?
09:03I can't.
09:03These don't go up.
09:05Now I just hope I can make it all the way there.
09:08Because I don't really have a choice at this point.
09:10But it's a direct flight.
09:12So I only have to make it three and a half hours.
09:14And hopefully the worst of all this is behind me.
09:17And when it's time for her to actually sit in the plane, Breanne has a hard time fitting
09:20on her seat.
09:21But I'm trying to not panic and just hold on.
09:24This whole trip has been so much harder than I thought.
09:27And I'm in a lot of pain.
09:28So I have to get out of these seats and off this plane.
09:31But I'm completely out of energy.
09:34My body has been put through too much to be able to do much more.
09:40And I'm not sure if I would have done this if I had known what this was going to be like.
09:44I'm really uncomfortable now because they don't have chairs on those sides.
09:48And we're waiting on a wheelchair.
09:50I'm just in a lot of pain.
09:57Babe, can you wheel me out so it's not like in the front of everybody, please?
10:01She relies on food to get her through the anxiety of the flight.
10:04And by the time they land, she is completely ready to give up because of how demotivated
10:08and in pain she is from the long journey.
10:10And I really, really hope this all pays off when I see Dr. Now tomorrow.
10:14Because if it doesn't, I don't think I'll be able to handle it.
10:18But right now, I just really need to get to the hotel and get in bed.
10:22Because I feel like I'm going to pass out any minute.
10:25Oh, babe, I am pooped.
10:29Babe, I'm really hungry.
10:31Can we stop off and get a burrito?
10:33Yes.
10:36I want like a big burrito, babe.
10:38With steak, refried beans, star cream.
10:41It'll work, you know?
10:43Give me a kiss if you can't do it.
10:44By the end of the day, just walking at the airport has exhausted Breanne.
10:48And she needs nothing more than to feast on a good fast food meal to comfort herself.
10:52And that's not a good start to her weight loss journey.
10:54I feel like I could use a lot more sleep.
10:57Because I'm still sore from yesterday.
11:00But I have to get to my appointment with Dr. Now.
11:02And my mom will be here any minute.
11:05But the last time I saw her, I was in the upper 400s.
11:08The next day, Breanne is nervous to see her mother and Dr. Now, both on the same day.
11:38And to make things worse, her body is still in pain from the long journey.
11:41I finally made it to Dr. Now to try and get his help.
11:44And I'm about to find out what I weigh.
11:47I just hope I'm still in the 600s.
11:49I mean, that's a lot of weight, crushing all my organs and bones.
11:57I could die.
11:59And I pray that I'm not too big for Dr. Now to help.
12:03It's really scary.
12:04I was hoping it would be less.
12:06There is a lot riding on what the scales show.
12:08And Breanne is shocked to learn that she is severely overweight and has crossed well into the 700-pound territory.
12:13All right.
12:14So, Breanne, you made it all the way down from Oregon.
12:19How are you feeling?
12:20Okay.
12:20That's good.
12:21And today you weigh in at 742 pounds, huh?
12:26Mm-hmm.
12:27All right.
12:28And you're 30 years old?
12:30Mm-hmm.
12:30Is this the highest weight you have been?
12:32Mm-hmm.
12:33So, what do you eat for breakfast?
12:35Sometimes we have, like, frozen burritos and stuff like that, or we might buy, like, the breakfast food that's easy.
12:43And then after that, I'm settled for a little bit, and then I'll snack throughout the day.
12:47What do you snack on?
12:48Mostly, like, chips and just crap.
12:52Okay.
12:53What else?
12:54Probably more fast food.
12:56And who gets that for you?
12:58He'll go out and get it.
12:59What fast food does he get for you?
13:01Burgers, or sometimes he'll pick up food from a restaurant.
13:05At this point, she just hopes that Dr. Now will agree to take her into his program, because she doesn't know what else to do if he doesn't.
13:11Dr. Now asks Brianne how she got to this point.
13:14He is shocked to hear how careless she has been about what she puts into her body.
13:18She's at a very critical point right now, because the fact that she's been this heavy while she's young is the only reason her body has been able to still get around and function for the time it has.
13:30So if she doesn't start to make the changes she needs, that's all going to change rapidly very soon.
13:37Then what is next up, 800?
13:39I don't want it to be.
13:40Well, right now you're headed to one of two scenarios.
13:44You either are going to make it up to 800 pounds and become completely better than soon, at which point you won't survive much longer.
13:52That's the end of it.
13:53Your only hope is to change now.
13:55So how motivated you are to make the changes?
13:58I'm very motivated.
13:59Dr. Now needs Brianne to commit to making some serious changes in her life before she comes back to see him the next time.
14:05She has gotten a major reality check about how serious she needs to be about her health now.
14:09And Rick, no more enabling.
14:12It's going to be like a drug addict coming out of withdrawal.
14:16She's going to have some shakes and all those things.
14:18But if you want her to live, you can give in no matter how upset she gets, okay?
14:24Yes, sir.
14:24Okay, the last thing is, as you wait, Brianne, it is not safe for you to be traveling as far as you did every time.
14:32So if I accept you into my program, you will need to move down to Houston.
14:37Are you willing to do that?
14:40100%.
14:40Good.
14:41You need to take this seriously, and you have to take action now because you're running out of time.
14:47And he doesn't just hold Brianne accountable.
14:48He wants her husband to realize his role as the enabler, too.
14:51These past four weeks have probably been the hardest of my life.
14:55Not only have I given up all the foods I like and stuck to Dr. Now's diet religiously,
15:00but I've made the hard decision to move to Houston without Rick or Kat.
15:04Don't start packing the truck.
15:05All right.
15:06All right.
15:07Dr. Now says I can't be on my own right now.
15:10But with my parents there, my mom agreed to help and come by every day to make sure I have what I need.
15:14And we found an apartment I can afford for a year.
15:17So I'm doing this.
15:19But it's literally the hardest thing I've done in my whole life.
15:22Brianne is packing to move to Houston in the second month of her weight loss journey.
15:25But sadly, she has to make the move completely alone.
15:28All right, sweetie.
15:28I love you.
15:29I love you, too.
15:30All right, yes.
15:32All righty.
15:33We'll see you.
15:35This is going to be about a five-day drive.
15:38And I'm worried about being on the road for that long.
15:40But I'm hoping all the exercise I've been doing will help me to be able to go longer and handle more this time.
15:48But if something goes wrong while we're on the road, I don't know what I'm going to be able to do.
15:55You ready?
15:56Yep.
15:57Okay.
15:58She wants her husband and her stepdaughter to focus on their own lives while she focused on getting better and hoped that it would all work out at the end.
16:05After six days on the road, we finally made it to Houston.
16:10It took us a day longer than we thought.
16:11So it's been a really long trip.
16:13And I've had some stomach pain.
16:15And I've also been a little queasy.
16:17So I'm ready to just be off the road.
16:20I'm really tired.
16:24And I'm worried about the strain of all this traveling on Rick, too.
16:28When he's not doing well, he hides it.
16:30Because he wants to be there for me and take care of me.
16:33But Brianne pushes through.
16:34And soon enough, she is in Houston, getting ready to begin a completely new life.
16:38My mom and me are headed to see Dr. Now for my follow-up appointment to find out if I hit my goal or not.
16:44But so far, it's been a horrible day.
16:48Everything that can go wrong seems like it's going wrong.
16:51My greatest fear moving down here was that something would happen with Rick.
16:55And he would have an issue with his heart, and I'd be too far away to be there for him.
17:00And that's what's happening right now because Rick thinks he's having a heart attack.
17:03So he's at the hospital waiting to find out if he is.
17:07But I have no idea what's going on.
17:10So I'm just freaking out a little bit.
17:12Thankfully, she has her mom by her side while she manages the big move and Dr. Now's diet.
17:16But the only thing to make this day worse is to find out I'm not getting weight loss surgery.
17:21And I'm down here going through all of this away from Rick for nothing.
17:24But I've done everything I feel like I can because at my last appointment, I was shocked to find out that I had gotten up to 742 pounds.
17:34And Doc told me I had to lose 120 pounds in two months.
17:38So that means I need to have made it down to 622 today.
17:42And the next time she goes to see Dr. Now, Brianne is nervous about her progress.
17:46And if she hasn't lost enough weight, all of this would have been for nothing.
17:49I can't believe it.
17:55I could feel I was losing weight.
17:58But I still had no idea what kind of progress I was making.
18:01And if I was anywhere close to my goal.
18:03So seeing how much I lost is just exhilarating.
18:07But I'm still worried about Rick.
18:10Hey.
18:10Hey, babe. How are you feeling?
18:12I'm still got a pain in my chest.
18:15And the pain started to go away.
18:16I felt really good.
18:17And it started coming back.
18:20Oh, crap.
18:21I'm in ICU until they figure out what's going on.
18:24I'm not ready yet for you to go.
18:26Me neither.
18:27But it looks like Brianne's hard work has paid off.
18:29And she has lost the weight Dr. Now wanted her to.
18:31However, Rick is not doing too well.
18:33But he's happy to hear about the progress Brianne has made.
18:35I know the issue is down to your weight loss.
18:38Because you made it down to 604 today.
18:41And that's a weight loss of 138 pounds in two months.
18:44So that's great.
18:46So what are you dealing with that's keeping you from celebrating?
18:49Your weight loss and your birthday today.
18:52My stomach hurts a lot.
18:53And Rick, my husband, is in the hospital because of chest pains.
18:56And I'm throwing up.
18:57But when I throw up, it's like just foam liquid.
19:02I'm sorry to hear about Rick.
19:04I hope he's okay.
19:06And normally with your weight loss, I would be approving you for your weight loss surgery.
19:10But I'm going to send you to a hospital right now because if you can't keep anything done,
19:15it could be very serious.
19:17But despite her weight loss, Dr. Now notices that Brianne is not feeling too well when she
19:21should be celebrating.
19:22One little thing can push your body over the edge and that would be it.
19:27So this is an issue that may be life-threatening for you.
19:30Hang on a second.
19:31I need to go.
19:32Whatever is going on, we need to address it quickly.
19:35But Brianne isn't out of the woods yet because she hasn't been able to keep any food down
19:39lately.
19:40And that concerns Dr. Now.
19:42After running some tests, we were able to determine that Brianne currently is suffering
19:47from some food poisoning.
19:49So it's relatively minor, but it's still something to take seriously for someone her size.
19:55Because even something that normally will be a minor issue can be the final straw for a
20:01body that is already under so much strain with all that weight.
20:05But with her here in the hospital, it would be easy to treat.
20:09After the doctor sees how bad her condition is, he immediately sends her to the hospital
20:13to deal with her nausea and abdominal pain.
20:15At the same time, Rick was having chest pains and had to have a heart stent replaced and is
20:20now recovering back home.
20:21I didn't like the way you look in the office, so we got you in here to make sure everything's
20:25okay, but I just got the lab report back.
20:29You have a little bit of food poisoning.
20:31It seems like you have probably eaten something you left out for too long, but part of living
20:37on your own is learning you can't leave food out for too long.
20:42So we'll give you some IV fluid.
20:44Perfect.
20:44And in there too, you should be back to normal, okay?
20:47Okay.
20:48And once you fully recover, then you're back to your baseline in a couple of weeks, we'll
20:55set you up for a weight loss surgery, okay?
20:57Yes.
20:58Turns out she was just suffering from food poisoning, but Dr. Now is still concerned about
21:02Brianne's health.
21:03And we're going to schedule it for next month to give you a little bit more time to recover.
21:08But we started over 700 pounds.
21:10Yeah.
21:10You come a long way and you have lost 138 pounds, huh?
21:15So, and that's very good.
21:17And I'm proud of you and your progress.
21:20So just keep up the good work and we'll keep here for a couple of days and get you going
21:26home and then we'll follow up in a couple of weeks, okay?
21:30Okay.
21:30All right.
21:31I'll see you later.
21:32Okay?
21:32You know.
21:33All right.
21:35Dr. Now tells her that she needs to be careful about what she's eating.
21:38And only once she is back to her full health, will he approve her for weight loss surgery.
21:42And that's good enough for Brianne.
21:43Right now, me, Rick, and my mom are headed to the hospital because I'm getting weight
21:48loss surgery today.
21:49And I'm really excited about it.
21:51So, I'm just glad that this day is finally here and that I have Rick back with me.
21:57Hello.
21:58Hi, Dr. Now.
21:59Good morning.
22:00Good morning.
22:01How you doing?
22:03Tired.
22:04Tired?
22:05I didn't sleep.
22:06Oh, you didn't sleep.
22:08We're going to let you sleep during surgery, okay?
22:10You ready for this?
22:11Finally, you're going to do it, huh?
22:14Yep.
22:15All right.
22:15Great.
22:16But I had a boo-boo.
22:19What happened?
22:21I had a last supper, I call it.
22:25I thought that was for Jesus.
22:27In the fourth month of her journey, Rick is back in Houston to help Brianne through her
22:33weight loss surgery, and it's a big day for her entire family.
22:35She has a really thick abdominal wall.
22:39Makes it difficult to maneuver the instruments.
22:43So, we need to limit the duration of the surgery, and if you have any indication that's going
22:48to happen, we will have to end the operation early for safety.
22:53But if we complete the surgery, this will be a big help for Brianne.
22:57Dr. Now goes into the procedure confident, but cautious.
23:01He knows that because of how big Brianne had gotten, he is bound to run into a few internal
23:04complications after opening her up.
23:06Right now, I'm really anxious.
23:08It's just very difficult for me to sit here waiting for Dr. Now to finish up with Bri.
23:13And I'm well aware that there's a risk in any kind of surgery that's done, but Bri means
23:20everything to me.
23:21She's the love of my life, so I'm hoping that the surgery goes well.
23:26Okay, the stomach is separated, so we can remove it.
23:30I got it.
23:32Rick and Brianne's mom are extremely nervous, desperate to hear something about how Brianne
23:36is doing inside.
23:36But we were able to complete her operation safely, so this will be a big help for her
23:43now.
23:43And now that she has had this operation, she should be able to lose another 40 pounds the
23:49first month after surgery.
23:51Then settle into losing around 30 pounds each month after that, until she gets close to her
23:57target weight.
23:58She did great, working hard and losing a lot of weight the past few months.
24:02But eventually, she will start to gain again, even with the aid of weight loss surgery, if
24:08she doesn't deal with her emotional issues that have been driving her to eat.
24:13And as difficult as it was, Dr. Now manages to pull Brianne through the surgery pretty successfully.
24:18It's been almost a month since my weight loss surgery, and my recovery has been good.
24:23The first couple of weeks, it was hard for me to do a lot, so Rick decided to stay down
24:27longer.
24:29It's been really nice being with him.
24:30But now that I've pretty much recovered, Rick is heading back to Oregon, and I wanted to
24:35go out and celebrate how much I can do now, and spend the whole day with him.
24:40This is gonna be like one of our last hurrahs for a while, huh?
24:44Should be fun.
24:45Babe, I'd have fun with you in a cardboard box.
24:49Depends on what came in the box.
24:50What?
24:52Since the surgery, Brianne has lost a total of 211 pounds, which is a massive feat for
24:57her after all these years of being stagnant.
24:59So Rick and I are just gonna have fun and enjoy a taste of the new life I'm working
25:03so hard for.
25:05I wonder if they're gonna show us St. Joseph's Medical Center.
25:08Shut up.
25:09So you wanna go up the top?
25:11I'm gonna try.
25:12Hopefully I can make it.
25:13Yeah, these are steep.
25:14Thank you so much for your patience.
25:20My name is Antonio, and I'm gonna be your toy guy today, and I'm gonna start the tour
25:23in a couple of minutes.
25:25Before we start, I would like to mention that for your own safety, please always remain
25:29seated when the vehicle is in motion and keep your arms and head inside the vehicle
25:33at a time.
25:35You did it, hon.
25:36I'm gonna sit behind you, okay?
25:37Okay.
25:38Losing all this weight has brought a newfound confidence in Brianne, and she feels like
25:42she is ready to do things she hasn't done in a long time.
25:44I'm grateful that I get this time with Rick.
25:46And I'm very sad he's leaving, and that I'm gonna be alone again.
25:52So these next few months are gonna be tough, because Dr. Now said I needed to start therapy
25:57if I wanted to be able to stay on track and keep making progress, and that he was going
26:02to set up appointments with a therapist for me.
26:05And I know starting that isn't gonna be easy, because it means I'll be talking about a lot
26:10of hard stuff.
26:11But I love the direction my life is going now.
26:15You have fun?
26:16Oh, yeah.
26:16While a city tour might not seem like much to many to Brianne, it represents how far she
26:21has come since the beginning of her journey.
26:23But she is dreading Rick's departure once again, and has to make another big decision about
26:27her well-being.
26:28Today I'm gonna be meeting with a therapist, and I'm really emotional right now.
26:34After Rick left, I've been on my own.
26:37So I've been extremely lonely, and that's made it a little harder to build up the courage
26:41to go to therapy.
26:43But I had another appointment with Dr. Now, and I'm still losing.
26:46But not as much.
26:48And he told me if I wanted to stay on track, I need to do this now.
26:53So I'm going.
26:55I'm just not looking forward to it.
26:57In month six, Brianne continues to lose weight.
26:59But now, it's time to work on her mental health and go see the therapist Dr. Now has referred
27:04her to, no matter how hard it feels.
27:05So, good to meet you.
27:08I want to start by finding out a little bit about you.
27:12Um, I started my weight loss journey at over 700 pounds.
27:16Okay.
27:16I've lost over 200.
27:18Congratulations.
27:19So, what was childhood like for you?
27:21My parents, they, you know, they were in the military.
27:24They worked a lot.
27:25Okay.
27:25And my dad, he kind of worked all over the place.
27:28He traveled a lot?
27:29Well, he did do a couple tours, um, like out of country where he was gone for about 14 months.
27:34So, it was just my mom and my brother and sister and I.
27:37My relationship with my dad really turned.
27:40We just, we just clashed all the time.
27:43So, it was things like talking back to him?
27:46Mm-hmm.
27:47Like, I don't know if it was something I did or something that I was doing, but I just
27:50felt like my dad just didn't like me or love me.
27:54Brianne is nervous heading into the appointment, but Dr. Paradise immediately makes her comfortable,
27:58and she starts opening up to him about things she has never told anyone before.
28:01Thank you so much.
28:03Thanks for coming.
28:03It was great to meet you.
28:04Yeah, great to meet you.
28:04Take care.
28:08I know I needed to do this, but this was so hard, which is what I was scared of.
28:15And just the thought of even talking to my mom, much less my father, even if it's down
28:19the road, terrifies me.
28:21But this is something I have to do if I want to ever break the cycle that always leads me
28:26to food.
28:28So, this is going to be a big challenge, and I just hope it doesn't all go horribly wrong.
28:34After the appointment, Brianne knows that this was the right thing to do, but she can't
28:38bring herself to even think about what her therapist wants her to do, but she's willing
28:41to do anything to keep getting better.
28:43Since my therapy appointment, I've been working up the courage to do what Dr. Paradise said
28:47about standing up for myself, and to start facing some of the emotional things from my
28:52past that have been tied to eating for me.
28:54So I asked my mom to help me run some errands, and then get some lunch with me, hoping we
28:58could talk.
28:59And now, it's finally time for Brianne to put her words where her mouth is, and open up
29:14to her mom about some of her childhood trauma, and she is dreading it.
29:17I know, I've come a long way, and I want to keep that going.
29:20But to do that, my therapist says I need to deal with some things.
29:23And that's kind of something that I've been wanting to talk to you about, just to kind
29:26of get it off my chest, like, growing up.
29:31I just, I felt like I only really had myself to depend on, and I've just felt like dad didn't
29:39love me.
29:40I can see that.
29:41But I didn't understand why you didn't do something to stop how he treated me.
29:45I don't know.
29:46I don't, I can't answer that.
29:50The one where I felt like dad just hated me was when we were all writing.
29:56And he got mad, and I just remember he said every name in the book, like, and I still
30:01remember, like, the look, you know.
30:03I just, I never got that out.
30:05And you came upstairs, and you were pissed.
30:07But you still didn't do anything.
30:09And even though it's hard, Brianne begins the conversation with her mom and confesses
30:12how lonely she felt back when she was a child.
30:15Dad should have known better.
30:18I've talked to him about that never explode.
30:22And, um, you know, I haven't physically seen him in, like, 11 years.
30:27That hurts me dearly.
30:29And that hurts me, too.
30:31I don't know what I could have done to make it different.
30:34You could have protected me more.
30:36You know, I wish, you know, growing up that you were just there for me more.
30:40You know, it's not fun feeling scared and all alone when you're a kid.
30:44I feel like you let me down.
30:46You should have been there for me.
30:47And while Brianne's mom tries to make excuses for herself and her husband,
30:53Brianne is not letting her get away without accountability this time.
30:56This has been one of those f***ing days.
31:00Letting everybody down now.
31:02I'm done.
31:03I was afraid this would happen.
31:15I just hope that I didn't just make things a whole lot worse.
31:19But Brianne's mom is a little overwhelmed by the conversation
31:21and decides to walk out, which is what Brianne was scared of happening.
31:25I'm packing right now to take a trip back to Oregon.
31:28Rick and Kat don't know I'm coming,
31:29and I'm hoping to surprise them when I show up.
31:31Kat's been having kind of a rough week.
31:35And like the very first thing she said, it was like,
31:38I wish I could hug you.
31:40I miss them both so much.
31:42And I can't wait to show them how far I've already come.
31:45Especially Kat.
31:47I haven't seen Kat since I left.
31:50So it's been like seven to eight months.
31:52So she should see a huge difference in how I look.
31:55In the seventh month, Brianne has lost almost 300 pounds,
31:58and she misses her family so much that she's taking a short trip back home.
32:01The last time there was no way I could walk through the airport at all.
32:06So this just shows my accomplishments paying off.
32:10So far I'm really tired.
32:12It's kind of taken a lot out of me.
32:14And I'm just feeling a little bit weak.
32:19I'm hoping that my body can make it through the rest of today's travel.
32:24I knew I should have waited.
32:27I feel like I'm starting to get to my limit.
32:29So I need to get on the plane soon before I get to that point.
32:32Or it could get bad.
32:34Compared to her first trip to the airport,
32:35you can already see the difference there has been in Brianne's way of life.
32:38And while she is still not feeling her best after all this physical activity,
32:42she does all she can to keep pushing ahead.
32:45Before getting on the plane, I was starting to get really worried
32:47that I wasn't going to be able to push myself to keep going
32:50and make it all the way here.
32:53But thankfully it wasn't too long before they let us board.
32:56And once I got on, I was able to catch my breath a little.
33:00So I'm really glad I did it and I made it here.
33:03But I'm feeling really exhausted from all this activity.
33:06And I'm ready to get home.
33:09But I still have a long drive ahead of me,
33:11so I need to just hold on a little longer.
33:14After the flight lands, Brianne is feeling exhausted,
33:18but she is still able to walk all over the airport before getting out.
33:21This is going to be so great.
33:23Hi!
33:25Hi!
33:26Hi!
33:26Surprise!
33:30Surprise!
33:32I missed you so much.
33:34I missed you more.
33:34So awesome.
33:36Sorry to make me make you cry.
33:42I'm just in shock because I wasn't expecting her to be here.
33:46So I'm really happy, really happy to see her.
33:52So how did you manage to come back?
33:54I had no idea you were coming back.
33:56I woke up at 5 o'clock in the morning, flew out of Houston, walked through Houston,
34:02and we landed at Portland.
34:04Jamie picked me up because I wanted everybody else to be surprised.
34:07She is all set to give her family a surprise and show them how much she has changed in the
34:12course of a few months.
34:13And let's say the reunion is pretty emotional.
34:17Hi, baby.
34:18Oh my God!
34:23What did I tell you?
34:26Oh my God!
34:29So, thank you so much.
34:31I just missed you so much.
34:35Surprise!
34:36Are you surprised?
34:40Well...
34:41Oh my God.
34:45I didn't know anything about it either.
34:47She showed up in the door.
34:49Oh my God, and you look so good.
34:52I'm proud of you.
34:53Thanks, Kinka.
34:55Oh!
34:56Oh!
34:56When she surprises her stepdaughter, you can tell that Breanne has missed her while
35:01she was trying to become a healthier person and work towards a better future.
35:05So I missed my last appointment a month ago, but Dr. Now said it was fine as long as I stayed
35:09on track.
35:11So even though I've been away, it hasn't been a vacation because I've been working hard
35:16to do that.
35:17And I'm feeling confident my weigh-in will be good today.
35:21And hopefully I'll be able to get approved for my first skin removal.
35:24To have the excess skin around my stomach removed.
35:27Because all that sagging skin is really starting to cause me a lot of pain.
35:32But Dr. Now told me I need to get down into the 300s before I'm ready for that.
35:36And if I stayed on track, I should have done that.
35:38Because at my last weigh-in two months ago, I was down to 447.
35:43And he told me at this point, I should be losing at least 30 pounds a month.
35:47In the 10th month, Breanne is at Dr. Now's office to check on her progress, and she hopes
35:50she has lost enough weight to get skin removal surgery.
35:54I'm doing things on my own right now.
36:10You're on your own now?
36:12Yep.
36:12Well, I'm proud of you for taking a step like that, and for not using that as an excuse to run back to food or doing less.
36:20But you were supposed to lose at least 60 pounds from your last weigh-in by today.
36:26You only lost 50.
36:28But considering your weight loss slowed to losing only around 10 pounds a few months ago, I say this is a move in the right direction.
36:36So I'm happy with that.
36:38You lost almost 350 pounds at this point.
36:43Okay.
36:44Wait, I should get two for that one.
36:45Okay.
36:47With how much you have lost, you are ready for your first excess skin removal.
36:52And it looks like Dr. Now is happy with how things are going for Breanne, and she is ready for her skin removal surgery.
36:58I was really hoping that I'd be able to get approved for skin removal today and get an actual date on the schedule.
37:04But I know Dr. Now is right and that this isn't going to be an easy surgery.
37:09So I'm going to need the help.
37:10And my mom is the only option I really have.
37:13But it makes me nervous to think about reaching out to her right now.
37:18But I started to transition to a new phase in my life.
37:22And I intend to get there no matter what.
37:24Of course, the process comes with its risks, and Breanne needs to figure out who can help her as she recovers from it.
37:30Once that's done, Dr. Now is ready to welcome her back for the procedure.
37:33When I got back from Oregon, I decided I want to get out and start doing more things on my own.
37:38And one thing I decided to do was join a local co-ed softball team.
37:42I'm amazed at how much I'm able to do now.
37:45And I'm going to make sure I keep making progress no matter what.
37:48Even if it means I have to face things I don't want to and have conversations I prefer to avoid.
37:55I've already taken another step and reached out to my mom and had another conversation with her.
38:00And this time it went better.
38:02She even apologized for last time.
38:05So that was really encouraging.
38:06And she also said that she would be there for me and help take care of me if I have skin removal surgery.
38:13In the 11th month, Breanne has lost almost 400 pounds, and she is working on growing more independent and spending time with herself.
