00:00The reaction from the community was a mix of emotions, shock, certainly disbelief.
00:21I heard a rustling outside my window, and I see these soldiers.
00:26When there's three or four soldiers at your front doorstep, you know what it means.
00:33Investigators asked her if she owned any weapons, and she played it off like she didn't know much about guns.
00:40There was anger. How could someone do this to this young mother? How could someone do this to this young child?
00:48The world is missing a beautiful person with a big heart.
00:55All right.
01:05From the pulsating streets of big cities to Main Street USA, no neighborhood is safe from the unthinkable.
01:14These are the stories of innocence lost, of communities changed forever.
01:19This is City Confidential.
01:24Halfway between Baltimore and Washington, D.C. is Severn, Maryland, a small city known for its old-world charm and family-friendly environment.
01:42Severn is just a typical suburban community.
01:46Every morning, people go into work. Kids ride their bikes to school, up and down the sidewalks.
01:53People walk their dogs. People walk their dogs. Very safe community.
02:01This 18-square-mile area got put on the map during World War I, when the U.S. military set up a sprawling army base just outside of town.
02:10Between 1914 and 1918, the 8-square-mile fortress known as Fort Meade saw more than 400,000 soldiers pass through.
02:22During that time, it became the military's key communication hub, home to the Hello Girls, a hand-picked group of 223 bilingual switchboard operators who were integral in relaying messages to U.S. troops fighting in Europe.
02:49When the war ended, the government recognized the importance of the fort's contribution to high-tech communications, so they're built on its reputation.
03:01Soon, it was at the forefront of cold cracking.
03:04And by the start of World War II, the base's newly formed Signal Corps had developed much of the equipment used to communicate in battle,
03:12like the game-changing FM backpack radio that provided troops with reliable static-free transmissions.
03:19Nearly a century later, Fort Meade is considered the epicenter of America's intelligence community.
03:27They house the National Security Agency.
03:33They house the Defense Information Systems Agency.
03:37These are agencies that are responsible for foreign surveillance and, you know, making sure that different communication systems between the military can communicate with each other.
03:52And many of the 57,000 residents who live in Severn are some of the best cold-crackers and surveillance experts in the world.
04:01So in the summer of 2015, everyone was stunned when a tragedy no one saw coming showed up on their doorstep.
04:10It's just before 8 a.m. on Tuesday, August 25th, when a call comes in to the Anne Arundel County Police Department.
04:25A maintenance worker at a townhome community, two-and-a-half miles from Fort Meade, says he was making his rounds when he saw the sliding glass door to a unit hanging wide open.
04:35I went around to the front of the house, knocked on the door, and been doing this now for probably 15 or 20 minutes.
04:42No one's answering the door.
04:44Okay, I'm sending the officer out.
04:48The Anne Arundel County Police responded to the call, and they entered the house on the ground floor of the residence.
04:57They didn't see anybody.
04:58But when they go upstairs, on the master bedroom floor is a chilling scene.
05:06A baby is being held by a woman covered in blood who appears to be in her mid-20s.
05:14She had been shot several times in her chest and clearly had been killed as a result of those gunshots.
05:24Someone had taken her pants off and her underpants were pulled down.
05:28The initial officer described being particularly horrified by the scene because he initially thought that the child had been killed, too.
05:37Thankfully, when he took a closer look, he realized the child was moving, and the baby was taken from the scene to the hospital to get checked out and make sure that the baby was okay.
05:47Homicide detectives begin scouring the scene for any clues.
05:51They quickly find the victim's wallet, which identifies her as 24-year-old Carlin Ramirez, a private first class at Fort Meade.
06:01Because she's a soldier, cops call in the Army's Criminal Investigation Division.
06:05We toured the inside of a townhome, and yeah, there was nothing that was out of sorts other than the room where she was found.
06:19The top three drawers of the dresser were opened, and a lot of the contents were thrown on the floor.
06:26Like somebody was rifling through the dresser.
06:29Beneath the victim are three gunshot holes.
06:35This tells cops that she was lying down when she was shot.
06:39They recover one bullet lodged in the floor and follow the most likely trajectory of the others downstairs.
06:46There was two fully encased bullet slugs that were found, one being on the foyer floor, just inside the front door, and another slug on the living room carpet.
07:03The bullets are in good condition, and can easily be matched if cops can find the gun.
07:09Unfortunately, there's no murder weapon or even a shell casing to be found.
07:13That told us the shooter picked up the spent casings and removed them from the house, or that it was not a semi-automatic weapon, that it was in fact a revolver, where the shell casings remain inside the weapon after the weapon is discharged.
07:35Carlin's body is sent to the coroner, while cops scour the place looking for additional clues that might lead to the killer.
07:43You don't know what you have, and you're looking for trace evidence, so you're taking the sheets off the bed.
07:50You're looking for items that may have been touched.
07:54Forensic teams work the crime scene, while detectives shift their focus to the infant found in Carlin Ramirez's arms.
08:01Military records suggest the baby is Carlin's four-month-old daughter, Vail, and according to doctors at the hospital, the baby isn't injured, but they do find a tiny bit of blood on one of her hands.
08:15It's Carlin's.
08:16My impression was that whoever killed the victim had put the child in the arms of the victim.
08:24Maybe the child was screaming and the subject had put the baby down by the victim, the mother, to sue the baby.
08:33But there's no question, Carlin's murder was a targeted attack.
08:42And in a military town filled with people trained not to miss a single beat, a killer knew how to slip in and stay under the radar.
08:50That means either they got lucky, or police are on the hunt for a very sophisticated monster.
09:05In Severn, Maryland, news of Carlin Ramirez's death travels across the area like a transmission from one of Fort Meade's battlefield radios.
09:14The reaction from the community was kind of a mix of emotions.
09:21I mean, I think that there was shock, certainly disbelief.
09:28I do think that there was also an eagerness to try to find out what had happened here.
09:37How could someone do this to this young mother?
09:39How could someone do this to this young child?
09:42Carlin worked directly for me.
09:43She was a very, very beautiful person.
09:46Her personality was amazing.
09:47She always smiled.
09:48She's always ready to make things happen.
09:51And people just love being around her.
09:54We were kind of drawn to her because of the way she talked to people and the way she cared for people.
10:09All right.
10:13So, yeah, dealing with a situation like this with any soldier's heart, but with a soldier like her that so many people are close to, you know it's going to be a lot.
10:26I'm sitting in my bedroom, and I heard a rustling outside my window, and I peeked out, and I see these soldiers.
10:40If you've ever watched a single television show, you know that when there's three or four soldiers at your front doorstep, you know what it means.
10:52I got up, and I walked out of the room, and I yelled at my husband, Chewie, something happened to Carl, and he opened the door, and I just saw them standing there.
11:06He said, what happened to her, and they just told me that they regret to inform me that my daughter had passed away.
11:18And that's all they told us, that they didn't have any specifics, that they didn't have any, anything.
11:23Police learned 24-year-old Carlin was born and raised in Texas.
11:32I was a single mom at 24.
11:35She was a mommy's girl in the sense that she wanted to go everywhere with me.
11:41We didn't have any family, so it was us.
11:43We had each other.
11:44When Carlin was five, her mother met and married Chewie.
11:51He had two kids, and suddenly Carlin had a stepfather and siblings.
11:55They soon became one big, happy, blended family.
12:00As Carlin grew, she went from being a shy girl to a confident teenager who got a part-time job at the commissary of a local Air Force base.
12:09Carlin had no idea what she wanted to do with her life.
12:16She went to college, and she was studying criminal justice.
12:20And then one day she just told me, school's not for me, and I'm going into the Army.
12:28And I was like, why?
12:32It was so unexpected.
12:35I asked her, I said, Carlin, what has gotten into you?
12:41And she said, Mom, this is what I want to do.
12:45She signed up for intel in military intelligence.
12:49In 2014, Carlin was shipped to Korea for her first tour of duty.
12:55But just nine months later, her life changed course.
12:58She calls me.
13:01She says, I have something to tell you.
13:03And I said, what did you do?
13:06And then she says, well, I'm pregnant.
13:08And I'm like, what?
13:11You know, no one really wants single parenthood for their children, especially when you've lived it.
13:20But she says, it's okay, Mom.
13:22It's okay.
13:23You know, I'm going to be okay.
13:25Carlin told her mom, her new boyfriend was 35-year-old Sergeant First Class Malik Kearney,
13:33an Iraq war vet from Philadelphia with 17 years of military experience under his belt.
13:40He had a lot of responsibilities.
13:42He had a lot of wars, just very decorated.
13:45Chain of Command loved him.
13:47Superiors loved him.
13:48Soldiers loved him.
13:49She said that he made her feel like a princess.
13:54He made her feel like, you know, she was the most important person in the world.
13:58And that she loved him.
14:01The couple quickly became engaged and began planning their wedding.
14:06But when it came time to return to the States, the military threw a wrench into their plans.
14:11Malik was transferred to Fort Jackson in South Carolina, while Carlin was sent to Fort Meade.
14:19Over the next few months, the two successfully maintained a long-distance relationship.
14:25Then, in April of 2015, Vale was born.
14:30Malik was by his family's side.
14:31And when it was time to return to his base, all was well.
14:36Carlin was happy.
14:38And she had her baby.
14:40And she was, you know, where she wanted to be.
14:44And to me, that's all that mattered.
14:47But in just a couple months, raising an infant with an out-of-town fiancé seemed to get to Carlin.
14:53That's when she had an affair with someone she thought could relate.
14:56A married soldier at Fort Meade, whose wife was living thousands of miles away.
15:02I got a phone call from Malik, crying, because he found out that Carlin had gone out with another man.
15:13What she did was wrong.
15:15I said, if this is an issue now, and you're not even married yet, maybe you should reconsider getting married.
15:22And he says, well, no, I'm going to forgive her because I love her.
15:26Then, on July 15, 2015, Carlin and Malik married.
15:34From the outside, it appeared their troubles were behind them.
15:37They were like many military families, spouses devoted to each other and their country while living on separate bases.
15:43But Malik wasn't exactly a forgive-and-forget kind of guy.
15:50And shortly after the wedding, he insisted Carlin pay a price to both him and the Army for having strayed with her married co-worker.
15:59Carlin, being the type of person that she was, was very apologetic.
16:03And was willing to do anything to get his forgiveness.
16:12Malik forced Carlin to report this adultery, is what we call it in the military, to her chain of command.
16:21Within the Uniform Code of Military Justice, adultery is not allowed, period.
16:27You cannot have sex with anybody but your spouse, period.
16:31If it's found out, you get punished.
16:34Because if you're married and you're stepping out, then how can you be trusted?
16:40I can't trust you to maintain things in your own household.
16:43How can I trust you with, you know, military secrets?
16:47So both soldiers that were involved in this affair were reduced in rank.
16:54Money was taken.
16:56I had never seen Ramirez get mad.
17:00Like, she's always bubbly.
17:01She's always, always has a very good personality.
17:03Always with a smile on her face.
17:05She had a plan.
17:06She had a timeline that she wanted to meet.
17:08That demotion slowed their progress down.
17:10So she was upset.
17:13But Carlin pulled up her bootstraps and made the decision to dedicate herself to her baby and Malik.
17:24Just days later, the marriage blew up.
17:29Turns out Carlin wasn't the only one keeping secrets.
17:32Police in Severn, Maryland are just 24 hours into investigating Carlin Ramirez's murder case
17:46when they learned that the honeymoon period in her short marriage had ended as fast as it began.
17:53Carlin had put her military intel skills to use to check up on her new husband.
17:58That's when she discovered she wasn't the only one making mistakes.
18:04Carlin came to me a couple days after their honeymoon.
18:09She had spent some time with Malik.
18:11She said she was laying in bed and Malik had gone in the kitchen, took his phone, but he left his iPad.
18:17He was texting another young lady.
18:19iPad and phoned her linked.
18:22So she was seeing the messages.
18:25So that's when she found out that he was cheating on her.
18:28And she was like, I don't know what to do.
18:31Just kind of calmed her down and, hey, you got to do what's best for you.
18:35Do what's best for your daughter.
18:37Days later, Carlin told Malik their marriage was over.
18:41And, of course, reality hit him hard.
18:48Carlin was a beautiful, beautiful lady.
18:51And, you know, he had his trophy wife.
18:54He didn't want to lose it.
18:55He was crying.
18:56He was begging.
18:58You know, that he was sorry.
19:00That, you know, that he wanted them to work it out and this and that.
19:04But, you know, she had already made her decision that she was moving on.
19:08So he would do his best to stay talking to her.
19:13He said, don't leave me.
19:15Don't leave me.
19:15Don't leave me.
19:16He was calling all the time.
19:17If she went after his call, he was getting somebody else to call.
19:21He was blowing her phone up.
19:24It got to the point where she had to put in a restraining order to keep him away from her.
19:31For cops, a clearer picture of Malik starts to emerge.
19:36One of a very jealous husband.
19:38But before they can sit him in an interview chair, the medical examiner's report comes in.
19:46It was apparent that she was shot two times in the chest and one time in the right side of the torso,
19:55which exited out the left side.
19:57The ballistics on all three slugs came back to a .38 or a .357 caliber slug.
20:04And they were all fired from the same weapon.
20:09Revolvers haven't been used in the military for many, many years.
20:12So we definitely knew it was not a military weapon.
20:19The investigators were able to determine a window for the killing based on the temperature of her body, the last use of her telephone.
20:30And the window was approximately 10 p.m. to midnight, the night before, which was August 24th.
20:37And according to the M.E., there was no evidence Carlin had been raped.
20:44So the fact that her pants were removed, her underwear was pulled down indicated that whoever did this may have wanted to make it look like there was a sexual assault associated with the crime.
20:55And then you have the child placed in the mother's arm, that's kind of inconsistent with your typical sexual assault.
21:04It was more consistent with a premeditated act.
21:11And therefore, you'd look at the husband immediately.
21:18The day of the house, you pass the line.
21:20I'm busy.
21:20You guys, who doesn't answer all my questions?
21:23Oh, he shouldn't murder him.
21:35Why?
21:38That's what we're hoping you can help us with.
21:42I don't know.
21:44I don't know.
21:44I don't know.
21:45I don't know.
21:46When somebody's murdered, you know, we look at the poor people around that person in the family.
21:52Okay, first.
21:53Okay.
21:54Unless it's, you know.
21:55Detectives let Malik know they're well aware of the marital split and the restraining order Carlin filed against him.
22:03She's telling everyone in the world you're stressing her out.
22:06She's telling everyone in the world that she's scared of you.
22:09She's telling everyone in the world that she's scared of you.
22:12Never even, like, raising my voice with you.
22:16Like, I mean, I was the perfect gentleman.
22:21I would never hurt her, ever.
22:25So if you didn't, who did?
22:27I don't know.
22:28I don't know.
22:29I do not know.
22:30Detectives asked Malik where he was on August 24th, the night Carlin was killed.
22:39Malik told detectives that he got off work at around 2 p.m., went back to his apartment off post, just hung out at his house, watched movies, surfed the Internet, and then later on went to sleep.
22:54I need to go out and work out, need to go see friends, anything like that.
22:58I watch TV all day.
22:59Monday you came into work.
23:01Monday they went to work, went home, went to home all day.
23:06And you said you've been in town all week long, need to go to Maryland at all?
23:11I'm not going to Maryland.
23:11You can check the GPS on my car.
23:15I did not get a guy out of state of South Carolina.
23:18I have not been to Maryland since.
23:19Police take Malik up on his offer and download the data from his vehicle.
23:22They also copy everything on his cell phone.
23:26They send the material to the forensic team at Fort Meade for analysis.
23:31It'll take a few days to get results.
23:33So for now, cops focus on their other potential suspect, Carlin's married soldier slash lover.
23:40After all, he was publicly reprimanded and punished with a costly demotion in rank.
23:45And maybe in place of all that was lost, he gained a motive for murder.
23:52Police in Severn, Maryland, zero in on Carlin Ramirez's former lover, fellow soldier, and potential person of interest in her murder case.
24:10We had him come down to the CID office, and he was in disbelief.
24:19Even though their relationship had ended, they still were friends.
24:26But he was very, very upset that Carlin was killed.
24:32And it seemed genuine.
24:36He told us that he was home the night of the murder.
24:40However, no one could corroborate it.
24:45He agrees to let police track his whereabouts that night through his cell.
24:49So they take his phone, like they did Malik's, and send the data to Fort Meade for analysis.
24:59Meanwhile, the Army preps the remains of Carlin Ramirez for transport back to her hometown in Texas.
25:05A friend of mine actually was tasked with taking her body to Del Rio.
25:15So he comes to see me in my office.
25:16He said, hey, I have to go and identify her body.
25:19Do you want to go with me?
25:22So we go over to the funeral home.
25:24We go to the back where they have her at.
25:25And she's laying in a casket.
25:30And to me, it didn't look like her.
25:33It was like, wow.
25:36Like, my soldier's laying in this box dead because somebody decided to take her life.
25:41Like, why?
25:44Why?
25:45Like, what the?
25:47So I had to, yeah, I walked out.
25:49I was like, I'll be in the car.
25:52So, yeah, that's when it really sunk in that she was gone.
25:55I can honestly tell you that I really, I don't think I've ever sat down and just cried.
26:09I'm a woman of great faith.
26:12So I don't question, you know, whether I'll see my daughter again.
26:17I'll see my daughter again one day.
26:19I have faith that I will.
26:21My faith gives me strength.
26:24My family gives me strength.
26:26My little girl gives me strength.
26:30That's what I do.
26:32You do what you have to do.
26:33On August 28th, police finally get back the phone and GPS analysis from Fort Meade on their two potential suspects.
26:48According to the data, Carlin's lover was at home at Severn, just like he said he was when Carlin was killed.
26:59We actually confirmed that he was telling us the truth through cell phone records and what we call tower pings.
27:07And it located his phone at his residence.
27:11And Malik Kearney appears to be another dead end.
27:17According to the report, his phone and car were 500 miles away in South Carolina the night of the murder.
27:24He was driving a Jaguar, which has the internal GPS, and the detectives confirmed that that Jaguar was there that night.
27:36And while some investigators might have just crossed Malik right off the suspect list, they know there was trouble in this marriage.
27:53And this is Fort Meade.
27:56These people are in a whole different class when it comes to unscrambling information.
28:02And after working their magic, they found another hidden layer of data Malik never mentioned to police.
28:09A wiping application had been activated, so the phone was essentially being wiped of its data.
28:19And it caused investigators to look very closely at all aspects of the alibi.
28:29Detectives asked the phone company for a complete copy of Malik's cell records.
28:34And when they get them, they realize Malik was very busy the night Carlin was murdered.
28:39Shopping, surfing the net, and texting a mystery number.
28:51Five months after Carlin Ramirez's murder, police discover the night she was killed,
28:57her husband Malik was firing off texts to a 30-year-old nursing student living in Florida named Dolores Delgado.
29:03Investigators determined that Dolores Delgado had been a soldier.
29:10She had been stationed with Malik Kearney in Iraq and in Texas.
29:17It appeared that she was in a sort of on-again, off-again relationship with Malik Kearney
29:23that had lasted since they were both stationed together in Iraq.
29:29Investigators checked Dolores Delgado's phone.
29:31They wanted to see where the geolocation information would place that phone.
29:37And on the night of the murder, that phone was in the same location as Malik Kearney's phone.
29:45So they concluded that Malik Kearney was probably not telling the truth
29:50when he said he was alone at home because Dolores Delgado's phone was hitting off the same cell towers.
29:58Detectives fly to Florida to talk to Dolores, hoping she can clear things up.
30:08She was very cooperative, very forthcoming.
30:14And she admitted that she was at Malik's apartment all night long
30:20and that Malik never left the apartment.
30:23That would mean both of them were together in South Carolina at the time of Carlin's murder.
30:30And their phones give them a solid alibi.
30:33So cops wonder why Malik didn't just tell them the truth.
30:38First thing that came to mind is the severity of his wife being murdered
30:42versus being caught in an extramarital affair.
30:47You would think one would just come clean about it, but he didn't.
30:51Cops pressed Dolores to see what else she might know.
30:56Investigators asked her if she owned any weapons,
30:59and she played it off like she didn't know much about guns.
31:03For police, her answer is another flag.
31:07Here's a former soldier who spent five years in the military
31:10and was even deployed to Iraq, but she says she's not familiar with guns?
31:16Cops ask if they can copy the contents of her cell.
31:19She agrees.
31:21And when they look at the data,
31:23it doesn't take a high-tech sleuth from Fort Meade to figure out
31:27that Malik and her were plotting something.
31:31They saw Malik and Dolores talking about how many miles could be gotten out of her car
31:36and how to ensure that there was plenty of gas to make a long trip without stopping.
31:41So when we looked into Delgado's financial bank accounts and all,
31:47we found that she made a purchase at a local Home Depot
31:50where she bought two gas containers and a Twinkie.
31:56And it turns out,
31:58detectives hunched that Dolores might have been downplaying her familiarity with guns
32:03is right on target.
32:04They were able to see that in the not-too-distant past,
32:10she had been on social media trying to sell ammunition for a firearm.
32:17The ammunition for the same type of weapon used to kill Carlin Ramirez.
32:22There was a price tag on the box of ammo.
32:27And on that price tag was the name of the store that she purchased it from.
32:33And we were able to ascertain from the shop
32:38that they did, in fact, sell this ammunition to Dolores Delgado earlier in 2014.
32:45We also asked if there was any other items that she may have purchased,
32:51and they confirmed that she bought a .357 Magnum Taurus revolver from that same store.
33:01And judging by the recovered cell data from Malik's phone,
33:05it looks like the weapon ended up with him.
33:09There was actually a text message that Malik sent her saying,
33:13this gun's loud, and he appeared to be shooting the gun and telling her about it.
33:19So all the information that we were finding through Dolores Delgado's social media and her phone,
33:28and what we were finding with Malik, it was...
33:31The arrows were pointing to both of them being in cahoots on this whole murder.
33:39But even with a mountain of incriminating texts, posts, and receipts,
33:48police can't put either Dolores or Malik at the crime scene in Severn.
33:57They spend the next few months looking for anything that might make their case airtight.
34:03They find nothing.
34:05So they make a bold move.
34:09The phone rings, and it said, U.S. government.
34:13And I took the call, and he said,
34:17Mrs. Ramirez, I'm with the U.S. District Attorney's Office,
34:22and I'm calling to inform you there has been an arrest made in your daughter's case.
34:27And I was like, what?
34:30And I said, who did y'all arrest?
34:35And he said, Malik Kearney.
34:41And I was like, and so you're sure that he did it?
34:46And they're like, we have evidence?
34:52It was just crazy.
34:58It just blindsided me.
35:00And there was a lot of anger.
35:05And anger in the fact that I opened my door to you, and all along, you knew what you had done.
35:14With this situation with Malik, I honestly, even though I had my feelings about him, I didn't see murder in him.
35:26I didn't especially murdering his wife.
35:28I mean, again, he's a decorated soldier, outstanding career.
35:33His chain of command loved who he was, and they loved him.
35:36While the community of Severn absorbs the shock of the soldier-on-soldier murder,
35:43Malik's on-again, off-again girlfriend, Dolores Delgado, is arrested too.
35:48Both are transported to Maryland.
35:51We gave instructions to the Marshal Service that Delgado and Kearney were to be separated
35:57so that they can't get their story straight,
36:01and to also create an uncertainty in their minds as to what their co-defendant may be doing or not doing.
36:10As soon as Dolores lands in Maryland, detectives meet with her,
36:14hoping they can get her talking.
36:16But she immediately lawyers up.
36:19We told her not to say anything, but just to listen.
36:22And we showed her the receipts for the purchase of the gas cans from Home Depot.
36:26We showed her the images from her phone about the gas mileage on her car,
36:32and the text messages relating to bring that gun.
36:36That gun is so damn loud.
36:38And we laid that all out for her.
36:42Cops hope as Dolores stares down the long barrel of a prison sentence,
36:46she'll reconsider telling police what she knows.
36:51But three days pass, and there's still radio silence.
36:56Then the phone rings.
36:59Looks like someone else wants to talk.
37:10Three days after Malik Kearney and Dolores Delgado are arrested for the murder of Carlin Ramirez,
37:17police get a call from a Florida man.
37:19He says his son is Dolores Delgado's former boyfriend,
37:22and he has some information on the case.
37:26He told me that his son saw the news clip about Dolores being arrested.
37:34He said his son was very upset,
37:37and that in August of 2015, Dolores called him
37:41and asked if he would help her to get rid of some things.
37:46And so they met up late one night, shortly after the murder,
37:52and they disposed of a gun and some clothing.
37:57He relayed to investigators that he disassembled the weapon and threw the pieces of the gun
38:09in the water near Mare Island, Florida.
38:14The FBI dive team from Miami conducted a search of the water,
38:20and they recovered parts and pieces of a .357 Taurus revolver.
38:25It's brackish water, so things corrode and decay quickly.
38:31Fortunately, the gun parts appeared to be in pretty bad shape.
38:37Fortunately, experts at the FBI lab in Quantico are able to restore the revolver's barrel,
38:43attach it to the body of an identical model, and do a test fire.
38:49Which led them to find that that gun had been the very one that had shot the bullets that killed
38:54Carlos Ramirez?
38:57When investigators let Dolores' attorney know what they found,
39:02clearly they've cracked the code.
39:04Because suddenly, Dolores steps up and gives a chilling play-by-play of what happened.
39:10She said Kearney was angry with Ramirez for wanting to end the marriage.
39:17In terms of the reconciliation, Kearney would tell Delgado,
39:22she has three weeks to reconcile.
39:24And it was two weeks to reconcile.
39:26She has one week to reconcile.
39:30So he was counting down.
39:33And while he was counting down, she was bringing the gun up to him.
39:38He was test-firing the gun.
39:40He was putting all the things in place for his alibi.
39:45Because Dolores was in South Carolina at the time of the murder,
39:49she didn't actually get to witness what happened in the house in Severn.
39:52But after Malik got back, he explained to her that he went into the house.
40:01He had the gun.
40:03Carlin came down the stairs holding the baby.
40:06They argued there and then went upstairs to her room where he told her to put the baby down in the crib, which she did.
40:15As they were talking, she explained to Malik that she wanted to go forward with the divorce.
40:22It takes the jury just four hours to find Malik Carlin guilty for the death of Carlin Ramirez.
40:48He is sentenced to life without parole, plus 10 years for the firearms charge.
40:56Dolores Delgado bleeds guilty to the federal crime of crossing state lines to commit domestic violence resulting in death.
41:02And he is sentenced to 17 years in prison.
41:11Today, there are few people in Severn who were there when Carlin Ramirez was murdered.
41:17But the tragedy is remembered as a different kind of war story, the worst kind, where the real danger came from within, and no one at the nation's premier communications hub saw it coming.
41:30The world is missing a beautiful person with a big heart.
41:40Carlin was very, very loved by everybody that she came encounter with.
41:43And given the chance, she would have done amazing things in this world.
41:47I couldn't have asked for a better daughter.
41:53She was a beautiful mother, a great mother for the four months she gave her all to that child, to her baby.
42:02And she was mine.
42:07And I miss her every day.
42:09And I miss her every day.
42:39And I miss her every day.
