00:00Well, here he is. This is Matthew Darsh, of course, who just took over.
00:05It sounds like he's got a pretty good idea of who he's going to take,
00:09although he's not going to spill the beans on who that is.
00:12We have an idea at this point. I mean, we're going to keep debating it till the end,
00:16keep calling around and getting as much info.
00:19Part of the job at one point, because we all know the talent at this point,
00:22it's you're researching more on the character and personalities
00:27and, you know, you're just trying to get as much information.
00:31But there's a few guys we like.
00:35And do I have an idea at this point? Because it's in four days, probably.
00:39But we're going to keep doing our due diligence all the way through Friday.
00:43That was a waste of time. Let's listen to the kid that they're going to take.
00:48Well, this is Matthew Schaefer, of course.
00:51He has not spent much time in the New York area, just one trip for a concert.
00:56He's excited to potentially get to Long Island.
00:59I mean, I've been to New York once for a concert last summer.
01:02It's pretty cool. Like, I was downtown, actually.
01:05So, yeah, I haven't been to Long Island or anything, but here it's all really nice.
01:09What did you see?
01:10Morgan Wallen. Yeah, so pretty good country singer.
01:14So I'm seeing him this summer. So excited.
01:16What's it going to be like to hear your name?
01:19Yeah, I mean, everything. It's every kid's dream and especially mine.
01:23You worked so hard up to this point, and to hear it, it's obviously really cool.
01:27But the work just starts now.
01:29So let's see what he turns into.
01:33I think it's an exciting time for your franchise.
01:36You got new blood in the front office completely changing the perspective of everything.
01:44And now you got the number one pick, the 16 and 17 pick.
01:48You got a full deck.
01:50Lou's gone.
01:52I think the sun is rising again on Long Island with the franchise.
01:57I thought it was stale as all hell, Mike.
02:00And it was just not working.
02:02And people can say whatever they wanted.
02:04When they were a step away from the Stanley Cup final, they have, you know, they took two, three steps back.
02:12They did.
02:13And look, a part of that was a lot of those guys that were part of those two teams that were, you know, a couple games away from going to the final.
02:21Older players.
02:23And what do you do when guys are playing well for you?
02:25You end up giving them longer term deals.
02:27And then you end up, those guys get old fast.
02:30And that's kind of where they were.
02:32And they got a chance to reset themselves a little bit here with some youth.
02:36And look, I know I said I liked the other kid.
02:38Everything about Schaefer that I, and, and remember this, none of us could pick these guys out of a lineup before six weeks ago.
02:46This is not like the NFL draft or the NBA draft where we watch these kids in college.
02:51And we know you have to be a serious, like, there's only like a handful of people even who cover the NHL who actually spend time throughout the year diving into these prospects and getting ready for this draft.
03:03Any Islander fan didn't even know who Matthew Schaefer was before they got the number one overall pick a couple weeks ago.
03:08So that's just kind of, that's kind of how it is.
03:11But everything about this kid, Scotty, he's an unbelievable kid.
03:15He's been through a lot in his life.
03:16His mom passed away.
03:17He's at, you know, he's, he just seems like a great kid.
03:21He's got tons of skills.
03:22He's a Kale McCarr type skater and, and mover of the puck on the back end.
03:26So obviously my, you know, I hope it's a home run and it sounds like that's, uh, precisely what it's going to be.
03:33Listen, there's a lot of, you know, there's a lot of college hockey players that people still don't know who they are.
03:38And then the rest of them are in like the, Oh, or the, uh, the W.
03:42I mean, there's all kinds of guys playing in the juniors and everything else that are going to get drafted that people have never heard of.
03:50That's why if you watch it, uh, you lose interest quickly.
03:55If you're watching the thing on TV, because you're like, I've never heard of any of these people.
04:00And after about an hour of it, you're ready to jump.
04:02You have drop.
04:03You have to work.
04:04You have to do a lot of unloading.
04:05You don't want to do a little
04:20bump.
