On Friday, Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-NY) held a press briefing.

00:00Hello everybody so thank you for being here today and look everyone knows this

00:16Republican bill is a big mess but now we're hearing chatter they might try to

00:23rush it to the floor as soon as tomorrow so let's be absolutely clear this bill

00:29is deeply flawed it's devastating for American families it rips health care

00:36from 16 million people it has the biggest cuts to food funding ever lossing

00:43losing over 2 million jobs and that might go up because we hear they may

00:47change that make worse the clean energy provisions even worse biggest cuts to

00:52food funding ever and instead of fixing the egregious provisions of the bill

00:57they're trying to jam it through they don't want the American people to find

01:03out what's in it the more and more that Americans look at the bill the less they

01:08like it the more they despise it Quinnipiac said here are the polling data

01:14Quinnipiac 53 percent against only 27 percent support Fox News 59 against 38

01:23percent support Kaiser Family Foundation 64 percent against only 35 percent support

01:30and you'll notice in these numbers the American people are learning more and

01:34more about this bill I think in good part because of the action that Senate Dems

01:38have taken we have been relentless in letting people know how bad it is and now

01:45they know of course Americans hate this bill it steals their Medicaid it jacks up

01:50their premiums it takes away their jobs and gives trillions away to billionaires

01:55and special interests so of course Republicans are scrambling and rushing

02:01they know their bill is terrible they don't want the American people to see

02:06what's in it Republican leaders probably don't even want their members to know

02:12what's in the bill or else it will never get done there's no good reason for

02:18Republicans to chase a silly deadline none even Donald Trump two hours ago

02:25admitted the July 4th deadlines a fake and yet here they are rushing to meet an

02:30artificial deadline even though they know their bill is deeply flawed and harmful

02:35to their constituencies and their own politics Republicans need to show some

02:41backbone and tell Donald Trump his bill is a disaster it's a disaster because it

02:48betrays Republicans own promises not to cut Medicaid not to cut snap and the ACA but

02:57of course their bill does it has the biggest cuts to Medicaid and to snap ever listen to

03:03some of the things Republicans have been saying about their own bill here we have

03:08senator Tillis this will be devastating to my state senator Hawley goes from don't cut

03:14Medicaid to most cuts would be fine and senator justice our rural hospitals are gonna have a tough time

03:22you may have to hold your nose and vote for disagreeable policies Senate Republicans should

03:30listen to their own words show some backbone ignore fake deadlines stop the rush job questions yes thank you

03:38mr. leader one area you've had a lot of success in the bird process is getting rid of policies aimed at

03:43undocumented immigrants whether it was Medicaid restrictions Medicare restrictions

03:48also the asylum fee you just talk about the victories in that area with well look in

03:53general we have gone to the parliamentarian because so much of their bill defied what

03:59reconciliation reconciliation is all about we've been very successful yes we have a whole bunch of

04:14task forces in our party in our caucus assigned to talk to certain Republicans on certain issues we

04:21have an outside strategy as well letting I've been on the phone all the time every night with thousands

04:28and thousands of people from the various groups to call their senators we're doing everything we

04:33can to stop this bill because it's so horrible yes there are now House Republicans who are explicitly

04:43calling for Zohran Mamdani to be deported they're calling for him to be denaturalized what what are your

04:49thoughts on Republicans making these that's disgusting yes senator can you preview in as much detail as

04:55possible the amendments that Democrats yeah we're gonna have amendments focused in five areas not

05:01exclusively but focused one is the cuts to health care the second is that it raises costs for Americans

05:07and at the same time loses lots of jobs the third is how it raises up gives huge tax cuts for billionaires

05:17the fourth is corruption that the Trump administration's engaged in and the fifth is the budget deficit not

05:25the budget deficit per se as bad as that is but it raises costs it's going to raise your cost to

05:30buy a car raise your cost to buy a home raise your cost for a credit card thanks everybody

05:35Senator Schumer you're going to be endorsing Zohran Mamdani

05:39I'll be meeting with him we had a good conversation he's run a good campaign I'll be meeting with him
