00:00President of SEIU 32BJ, Manny Passreich.
00:19Speaker, Carl Heastie.
00:21And now, please rise as we welcome the 57th governor of the great state of New York, Governor Kathy Hochul.
00:39Speaker, Carl Heastie.
00:44Speaker, Carl Heastie.
00:47Speaker, Carl Heastie.
00:53Speaker, Carl Heastie.
00:56Speaker, Carl Heastie.
00:58Speaker, Carl I'm Manny Passreich, and I'm the President of SEIU 32BJ.
01:02Speaker, Carl Heastie, We're the larger property service union in the country, and we are proud to represent 8,000 workers at LaGuardian JFKed.
01:10Speaker , Carl Heastie.
01:11Speaker, Carl Yeastie.
01:16Speaker, Carl Heastie.
01:17nation's most beautiful airports, the renovations have turned LaGuardia into a
01:20first-class transportation hub. And at the same time, and what's most important
01:25to me, is New York State has invested in the workers who make LaGuardia and JFK
01:30work, and that's what we're here to celebrate, the new and improved Healthy
01:34Terminals Act. Let's give it up for that. This is a life-changing and life-saving
01:42legislation that's going to make a difference for working people. And I just
01:47want to say, in this room today are the workers who keep our airports safe and
01:51clean and running smooth every day. We're the wheelchair attendants who escort
01:55loved ones through the day of travel. Any wheelchair attendants here? Yeah, there we go.
01:59We have the baggage handlers who lift and manage our luggage and get us through
02:04our journey. There we go, give it up for the passenger service agents who
02:09guide us and support us through the unforeseen travel agents and the
02:13cleaners like Christiana, who you're going to hear from shortly, who ensure that the
02:17terminals we sit in and wait in are clean and spotless. And while these workers,
02:23members of SEIU 32BJ and Unite here, are doing the hard work of our airports, I do
02:27want to take a second to thank them for the organizing that they've done, the
02:32fighting that they've done for more than a decade now to get us where we are
02:36today. Many of the leaders of this fight are in this room today. Their work is a
02:41testament to the fact that while it takes time to build solidarity and union power,
02:45we can make a difference. 32BJ! Again, you all have worked tirelessly for years to
02:53secure better wages, better working conditions, and better benefits. Over the
02:57past few years, we've transformed these jobs that were once at $10.10 an hour or
03:02even lower for tip minimum wage into jobs that have a path to $25 an hour, a path to
03:09health care, and now a path to paid days off. Let's give it up for that. I really
03:18can't say it enough. This is life-changing. Guaranteed paid vacation days of two to
03:22five weeks for the first time that New York and New York airport workers can go
03:28and take vacation with their families. Many take a week vacation for the first
03:33time in their careers at these airports. People can go to graduations, family
03:37reunions, or just take time off well-needed rest without worrying whether
03:41they can pay the rent. This latest win also secures health insurance so that
03:46people know, especially in these troubled times when health insurance is being
03:49taken away from so many workers, that they can feel secure that they're going to
03:53have the health insurance they need to take care of themselves if they get sick.
03:57And the Healthy Terminals Act means that 15,000 airport workers are going to have
04:02all of those benefits, and that's incredible. Let's give it up for that.
04:09So I am very thankful to the people in this room that have fought to make this
04:14happen, but I also want to say that we would not be here today without the
04:17support of our governor, Governor Kathy Hochul. Governor, you have been an
04:26incredible ally in this fight, an ally in boosting the minimum wage for airport
04:31workers, and by 2035 we are on a path to $25 an hour. Let's give it up for that.
04:38When we get our raise next month we're going to say thank you Kathy Hochul for the
04:42raise that's coming next month, and I'll just say this is a governor who's
04:45recognized that a commitment to workers is a commitment to retaining and
04:49recognizing the work that you ever do, the experience you bring, the safety and
04:54security, and just the hard work you do to make these airports run. That's the
04:58recognition that we appreciate. And also let's say this is a governor who's
05:02committed to addressing the affordable affordability crisis in the city and the
05:06state, and there's no better way to do it than raising the wage. Am I right?
05:11So listen, it's critical, it's critical to raise the wage so we can keep up with the
05:16cost of living. At a time when government's looking to take away health
05:19care for millions of workers, at a time right now we know 15,000 workers can feel
05:25secure that they're going to have the health insurance they need. When the
05:28federal government is attacking the role of immigrants, a majority of the people
05:33who make this airport work are immigrants from other countries, so let's just give it
05:36up for the immigrant communities that make this airport work. So again, thank you
05:41governor for everything you've done. I also want to thank the speaker, Carl Hastie,
05:46who's with us today. Thank you. Without your support, let's give it up for Carl.
05:50Without your support and the majority leader, Andrea Stewart-Cousins, we would
05:55not be where we are today either. You have been a staunch supporter of labor,
05:58staunch supporter of working people, a staunch supporter of airport workers, and you know
06:03in today's world where people focus on the negatives, people focus on the
06:06controversies, people focus on the things that don't get done. This is a great
06:10example from the speaker to the majority leader to the governor that got things
06:14done under the radar that impacted 15,000 workers, and we're here today to
06:19celebrate that, so let's give it up for all of them. I also want to celebrate our the
06:26assembly member Alicia Hyndman, who was the original sponsor of this. Thank you, thank you.
06:32Thank you. Your advocacy on behalf of airport workers is deeply appreciated as it was through
06:39COVID and your advocacy for essential workers healthcare. We appreciate everything that you've
06:43done. So again, thank you to the airport workers who spearheaded this. Thank you to
06:47the speaker. Thank you assembly member. And I want to say just deep, deep thank you to
06:52the governor who is so instrumental to make this happen, a true friend of 32BJ, a true friend of
06:57working people. Let's give it up for the governor of New York, Kathy Hochul.
07:04Good morning, friends. I was told this is a rally to allow you to give thanks to me for making sure we got this done, to make sure that you have no more insecurity about health care, to know that you're going to get the wages you need to support your families. But I'm going to turn this around.
07:14Because my friends, this is about you. This event is about you. It's about finally giving you the recognition that you've been denied for such a long time. And I know a little bit about this because I spent a lot of time and I'm going to see if this works. Does this work?
07:29Can you just tell me if this works? Can you hear me? Yes. Can you hear me loud and clear? Yes. Well, I wanted to be able to come out and see all of you. Can we turn this up? Crank it up.
07:44I've got something to say here. Let me see. Testing, one note. Nope. I want one that works, okay? Okay?
07:51This is not to thank me. It's to thank all of you because you're the ones who make this place work if you were not here.
07:58This is not to thank me, it's to thank all of you, because you're the ones who make this
08:18place work.
08:19If you were not here, you would not be able to welcome millions of people here every single
08:24year.
08:26You make sure they get here safely.
08:28You transport them, you take care of the luggage, you feed them, you clean up, and you are the
08:33ones who make this happen in a profound way that I, as your governor, am so proud of.
08:39You need to know that.
08:41I see you, I hear you, I understand you.
08:44And sometimes in life you have these jobs where you feel like you're taken for granted.
08:48You're just out there waking up early in the morning, working long days, leaving your kids,
08:54good weather, incredible heat, you had to come out in the last few days, sometimes it's bitter
08:59cold out here.
09:00And you know what you think, no one's thinking about you, you're just doing your jobs.
09:04That is wrong, because I understand how important you are.
09:10So to 32 BJ, I thank you, thank you, thank you for all you do.
09:15Let's give yourselves a round of applause.
09:17Unite 100, I thank you Jose Maldonado.
09:20Let's give a round of applause for Jose.
09:23B.J.
09:24B.J.
09:25B.J.
09:2632?
09:27B.J.
09:28I thought I could do that too.
09:30But first of all, let's talk about what leadership looks like.
09:34I mean, Manny and I have become very close.
09:37We talk about all kinds of things, our families, our challenges, our love of the working men
09:42and women of this state and his union.
09:44He just is so passionate about the work that you do.
09:48And I thank him for that, because leadership does make a difference.
09:52And Jose Maldonado, we've worked very closely together.
09:54I want to thank you for standing up to fight for your members every single day.
09:58You also have another fighter.
10:03You have another fighter, Carl Heastie.
10:07The Speaker of the entire New York State Assembly has joined us here today
10:12because he cares about you as well.
10:16Assemblymember Alicia Hyndman, I want to thank her for her service as well.
10:20And fighting for all of you.
10:23Let me tell you something.
10:25I haven't had a lot of glamorous jobs.
10:27I love being governor, but I started out making pizza and chicken wings.
10:33I'm pretty good at it.
10:34Anybody make food out there?
10:37How are your chicken wings?
10:38Real nice and hot and spicy?
10:40We're going to have a chicken wing cook-off sometime.
10:44I used to make $1.75 an hour.
10:48Oh, yeah, that was low.
10:49That was low.
10:51And worked long hours all day long into the night.
10:56There's just a couple of us.
10:58A lot of times you felt like you're just doing all this and nobody cares.
11:03And sometimes someone would leave a tip on the table, maybe 25 cents.
11:08Now, that's kind of insulting because it means they thought about it, right?
11:11And they still wouldn't even give you a good-sized tip.
11:13So I've come from that experience of working hard, kind of unsung, getting the job done every single day with me today.
11:23Because I know that I'll never take people like that or any of you for granted.
11:27So when we have an opportunity to say, you know what, these people work hard, they sacrifice, why aren't we paying them more?
11:35Because everything is going up.
11:39We had the pandemic.
11:40You showed up during the pandemic.
11:42Everybody else is staying home nice and cushy, zooming into life, and you showed up to work.
11:47I will never forget what you did during that time.
11:51And also, you come out of the pandemic.
11:53It's going to be fine again, right?
11:55Everything's good.
11:56What happens?
11:57We get slammed with inflation.
11:59No one counted on that.
12:01You're working hard, you get a paycheck, and the cost of everything is sucking more money out of your pocket.
12:07So I've also worked hard, not just with the Healthy Terminals Act that you fought for and you won,
12:13making sure that you have health insurance that means something,
12:17but also, as I talked about my State of the State address just a few months ago,
12:21said, your family is my fight.
12:23I may be New York's first mom governor.
12:29First mom grandmother, too.
12:31Okay, there's another one on the way.
12:33She's due in two weeks.
12:34The baby's due.
12:35So if you don't see me in two weeks, I'm holding a baby.
12:39But I also said, my family struggled.
12:43My parents lived in a trailer park.
12:45Dad worked at the steel plant.
12:47Grandma had eight kids at a little tiny house.
12:51Immigrants, poor immigrants who came here in search of better life.
12:56That's my family's story.
13:00We didn't have a lot.
13:01We used to buy our clothes at the used clothing stores.
13:03We didn't have that nice, fancy stuff.
13:06Had to put our clothes on layaway.
13:07You could never walk out with the clothes you wanted to wear
13:09because you had to come back in a few more months when your mom could have paid for it.
13:14I understand that to my core.
13:15And I also know, as a mom, how expensive it is when you've got little kids.
13:20They don't tell you that.
13:24Diapers, formula, they outgrow their clothes every three months.
13:27Literally, the clothes say zero to three, three to six.
13:30I'm not making this up.
13:31They just keep growing.
13:32The little sneakers, the backpacks you eventually need.
13:35You're shaking your head.
13:36You've got kids.
13:38How expensive are your kids?
13:40Very expensive.
13:41Anybody else got kids out here?
13:42Okay.
13:43So we said, working with Carl Heastie and Andre Sturt Cousins, let's put some money back in your pockets.
13:50For anyone with a child under the age of four, how does $1,000 extra every year sound to you?
13:59Children older, $500 per child for you.
14:03Covering the cost of school lunches and breakfast.
14:07Isn't it a pain to have to make the sandwiches every morning and you find out you're out of peanut butter?
14:12What are you going to do?
14:13I've been there.
14:14We're going to cover the lunch, the cost of school lunches and breakfast.
14:18$1,600 a child.
14:20That's money back in your pockets.
14:22The largest middle class rate tax cut in 70 years.
14:28More money for our middle class workers who are struggling so hard.
14:33And also, because I mentioned inflation, we collected more money in sales tax because everything costs more.
14:41Think about that.
14:42We weren't budgeting for that.
14:44For once, we had a little bit of a windfall.
14:46I said, oh, this is nice.
14:47Everybody's saying, oh, spend it over here, spend it over here.
14:49I said, no, you know what we're going to spend it on?
14:50The people who gave us that extra money, you, that came out of your pockets, right?
14:57So let's put $400 back in your pockets and say that is your money.
15:03So we're going to continue fighting for you.
15:05You've got great union leadership.
15:07I'm going to make sure that we're always going to have your back as you have had mine.
15:12And I take nothing for granted in life.
15:15And I'm going to make sure your family understands that affordability is not a new buzzword for me.
15:21It's something I've lived with my whole life, understanding the people who struggle.
15:26And I'm looking at a lot of faces from around the world.
15:28I love the diversity of this place.
15:30And what's happening to our immigrant families right now is sickening.
15:35And I've called it out.
15:37And, yes, we will help the administration in Washington get rid of all the bad criminals and the murderers and the rapists.
15:43And everybody said he was going to get rid of.
15:45Are you okay with that?
15:46I'm okay with that.
15:47Yes.
15:47Right?
15:47We've got to keep our communities safe.
15:49But there are so many families that are being separated right now.
15:52People following the rules, going into the courthouse with legal status coming out with it, being taken away from them, and now they're criminals in the eyes of people in Washington.
16:03We have to stand up, my friends.
16:05Our values are under attack right now.
16:07And you can count on me as the governor of a vastly fascinating place full of people from around the world who just came here for a better life like my grandparents did.
16:17So I'm proud to be your governor.
16:19I'll keep making sure that we can find policies and decisions that are going to help lift you up and your families.
16:26Because that is my number one job, keeping you safe and making life in this state more affordable for all of you.
16:33I thank you for all you do.
16:35I'm grateful.
16:35Let's give yourselves another round of applause.
16:38Thank you, everybody.
16:42Ladies and gentlemen, let me bring up.
16:46Five years of high school Spanish.
17:01Yeah, it took me an extra year.
17:02Ladies and gentlemen, we are so forward to have someone who not just fights for you, but delivers for you.
17:10Let me tell you one issue that Carl Heastie was so adamant about.
17:14The fact that if anyone gets laid off from their jobs or there's a strike, you got paid paltry amount of money, about $500 a week.
17:26Who can live on that?
17:28Carl Heastie said, Governor, we've got to do something about this.
17:31He says, we have to be able to change what is going on right now with our unemployment insurance fund.
17:37Take money from our state reserves and pay this off.
17:41So you know what?
17:42If you're ever out of work, it'll be $336 more a week.
17:47Over $800 if you have to be on strike or you end up losing your job.
17:52How does that sound to you?
17:54Ladies and gentlemen, give it up to Carl Heastie who fought for that.
17:58Ladies and gentlemen, our speaker.
18:01Thank you, Governor.
18:02You know, sometimes when you're the speaker or the governor, the staff prepares the remarks for you.
18:11And sometimes you don't want to use those remarks.
18:13Sometimes you go and you just want to read a room and just say what comes to your head.
18:20But first, I do want to acknowledge we have another amazing assembly member.
18:25It's her first year, but she's already a veteran.
18:28And Queens' own Lorinda Hooks is here as well.
18:30So, you know, in this beautiful airport, you know, I've always been one that I prefer to travel out of LaGuardia
18:39because it's much closer to my house.
18:41No offense, Alicia, about JFK.
18:45But all of you are just as important as the pilots and the flight attendants and the clerks.
18:52You're all part of the machinery that makes coming to LaGuardia Airport
18:56and our airports here in the New York area are great.
19:01And when I became speaker in 2015, we adopted a family's first agenda.
19:06And we tried to concentrate on a lot of things, wages, child care,
19:09making sure that families were able to educate their children.
19:17And it's kind of sad that we actually have to fight to get people a fair wage and benefits.
19:26I mean, that's the least that we should be doing in what is the richest country and greatest country in the world.
19:34So I just want to say to all of you, thank you, because I know a lot of times people walk by you, don't say anything,
19:40don't even acknowledge the hard work that you do at these airports.
19:43But I want to give all of you a big thank you for those who don't say thank you.
19:48And I'm going to make it a point to myself every time I'm in the airport to thank people,
19:53even if they're not helping me, for the tremendous support that you give
19:57to have the services that we get here in the airport.
20:00And I do, I want to thank Manny, who's a tremendous leader of 32BJ.
20:05And I'm going to mention Jose and his leadership of two great unions that really,
20:11with two great presidents that stick up for their members.
20:14But really, just congratulations.
20:16And this is just, I don't even want to say well-deserved.
20:19It's like, it should have happened a long time ago.
20:21And we really need to give it up to Alicia Hyman, who was the bill sponsor,
20:26the original bill sponsor back in 2020.
20:30Sometimes members come with a tremendous idea, and it kind of just takes hold.
20:38And you do, you have a governor, and you have an assembly, and you have a senate,
20:43and, well, you know, I'll mention, I'll speak on behalf of the senate,
20:45that really cares about working people.
20:48And for me, it means a lot.
20:50When I first got elected to the assembly, I didn't get on my first year,
20:53but the second year, I wanted to be on the labor committee.
20:56And then when I, it was only three committees that I ever dreamed about were dream committees.
21:04Ways and means, which I was never going to get, because we had an incredible Denny Farrell.
21:08Higher ed, because I was always fascinated by higher learning.
21:12But labor, and thankfully, I was able to be the labor chair right before I became a speaker.
21:17And being a member of three unions in my life, I was a member of 1707,
21:22the Organization of Staff Analysts, OSA, and DCE 37.
21:26And that stuff never leaves you.
21:28You know, it's like when you become the speaker, it's like labor never left me.
21:32And so we will always speak up and try to fight for working families.
21:38And knowing that union jobs, good union jobs, are the fastest path to the middle class.
21:44So thank you again for everything that y'all have done.
21:47And now I'm going to turn it over to Unite's incredible, incredible leader and champion,
21:51Jose Maldonado.
21:56The thing we're going third or fourth is that when you look at your paper,
22:03you got to go like this, because it's all over.
22:05Because they said everything that I was going to say.
22:08Thanks a lot, guys.
22:10But for me, it's a real honor.
22:13I've been, my name again is Jose Maldonado.
22:15I'm the president of Unite here, Local 100.
22:18If you've ever been in the sports and arenas in New York or New Jersey, that's our members.
22:23If you play golf, last time I said that nobody play golf.
22:26Anybody play golf?
22:28Right, it's not our cup of tea.
22:29But our members, our members serve the people that play golf.
22:33We have 24 country clubs in Westchester County.
22:36Of course, if you've ever been to any airports, we have our members out there.
22:40We do your food.
22:41We clean.
22:42We do all the things that I'm not going to repeat, because everybody said that, right?
22:46So we're the food service industry.
22:49Now, I was very impressed when the president said, 32.
22:52We did.
22:53Oh, wow.
22:54I have to come up with something different.
22:56We have our own chant.
22:57But then one of our, one of my members texted me, hey, president, won't you do the rap song
23:03that you did for us at the convention?
23:05I said, you crazy?
23:06The media's here.
23:07But he says, if you don't do it, I'm going to talk to you again.
23:10I said, okay, we'll do it.
23:11So it's not going to be like 32 BJ, but Unite, what's Unite here?
23:14So I'm going to do the rap, and when I say, when I say, when I point, you say, right?
23:21You say here, right?
23:22So here we go.
23:23Don't lie, right?
23:24Two years ago, a friend of mine said some MC, wait, wait, wait, wait.
23:29I need some music.
23:30Two years ago, a friend of mine asked me to say some MC rhymes.
23:34The rhymes were fresh, and they went this way.
23:36U-N-I-T-E.
23:38Yeah.
23:39Now, everybody.
23:39U-N-I-T-E.
23:41Yeah.
23:41U-N-I-T-E.
23:43Yeah.
23:43U-N-I-T-E.
23:45Yeah.
23:46Unite here.
23:47So we're 32 BJ, and we're 100.
23:50It takes red to make purple.
23:52It makes purple to make red.
23:54We're one union, right?
23:55So when I say union, you say power.
23:57Union.
23:58Power.
23:58Union.
23:59Power.
23:59Union.
24:00Power.
24:01Union.
24:01Power.
24:02Union.
24:02Power.
24:03Union.
24:04Power.
24:04And because of that union power that we have today, and because of our governor,
24:09today, not only a lot of things are changing in our community, not only things are changing
24:15are we safer, not only, we have changed real lives.
24:21Guys, think about it.
24:22We're going to have free or affordable health insurance.
24:25Thank you, governor.
24:26Thank you so much.
24:27You guys don't know how important that is.
24:30You're going to have holidays, time off.
24:32That's big.
24:34Not all New Yorkers have that.
24:35I hope that we can expand that to all New Yorkers, but let's start here, right?
24:39A lot of people are still on minimum wage, but we have to make a change.
24:44We have to make that change, and it starts here in the airport, and it starts with leaders
24:48like Governor Hochul right here.
24:50Let's give a hand to Governor Hochul.
24:53I said it before, and I said it again, right?
24:58Women are the best in leadership.
25:00We need more women in leadership.
25:01I want to personally thank my friend, Susie Lozada.
25:08In 30 years, this is a shame.
25:11Susie Lozada, give her a hand, Susie Lozada right here.
25:14In 30 years, this woman has been fighting for 30 years.
25:18In our organization, it was the first time in 30 years, in 30 years, that we have a woman
25:22in power, that we have a Muslim woman.
25:24And the four years that I had, Susie, to run for me, we grew by 6,000 members and improved
25:31lives all across New York and New Jersey.
25:33But it takes vision.
25:42It takes, it's not only vision, it takes the team.
25:45It takes surrounding yourself with powerful people.
25:47And that's what Kathy Hochul has done.
25:50So it is time to walk the walk, to knock on those doors.
25:54Let's not forget who put us there.
25:55Thank you so much.
25:56So I have the honor of introducing a 32BJ member, a cleaner at the airport, Cristiana Mendez.
26:12So let's give it a chance.
26:18Gracias.

27:43I am very proud of my 24 years working here, and my contribution to these changes.
27:52With my co-workers, we have been working to improve the experience of La Guardia for everyone, the travelers, the workers as well.
28:41Every day we are here to ensure a smooth trip for everyone coming in and out of our amazing city.
28:49We maintain a clean, safe, and efficient airport when people are on their way of vacation to relax, recover, and to be with their families.
28:59But now, we have it for ourselves.

29:05Además,
29:07Además,
29:11hemos protegido
29:14nuestro seguro médico
29:16con todos los ataques del Medicaid y otros
29:23programas.
30:01En addition,
30:03we have protected our health care.
30:04With all the attacks on Medicaid and other programs, this is very important.
30:10We also want more protections for more workers.
30:14In January, the law will apply to everyone, including my colleagues who are part timers.
30:20Health is fundamentally a right.
30:24And today, we have a protection.
30:27La lucha sigue.
30:30Esperamos el progreso de las negociaciones en el año viniente.
30:37Cuando vayamos a negociar estos términos en nuestros contratos, pero hoy sabemos que cuando luchamos, ganamos.
30:51Gracias.
30:52Gracias.
30:53Gracias.
30:54Gracias.
