00:00Welcome to The Project. Tonight, the massive shake-up to the ARIA charts that could change the Aussie music landscape for good.
00:09From singers to sports heroes, comedians to actors, we look back at 16 years of celebs gracing the project.
00:16Plus, Aussie funnyman Jimmy Rees drops by for one last laugh.
00:20And experts have revealed the two places on Earth that you could survive a nuclear war.
00:24Now, I'm not an expert, but I reckon there's enough room in my hat for everyone to fit.
00:29Thank you very much.
00:34We are live from the lands of the Kulin Nation tonight with Dave Thornton.
00:42That is what you meant to look like.
00:44You say we're wearing hats today and no one else wrote back or wore a hat.
00:49I am not the Laurel to your hearty, mate. I am not going to be doing this.
00:52Honest review, what do you reckon of the hat?
00:54You know what I genuinely think is that people worry about free-to-air and go, is it outdated?
00:58And then they flick on and see you wearing it.
01:01Sorry, I'm wearing it from the time when free-to-air was at its peak.
01:05Yeah.
01:061912, I believe.
01:07I have you tonight as an undersized, prepubescent Abraham Lincoln.
01:11That's what I'm going for.
01:13I mean, you thought about that.
01:15That was a lot of words.
01:16Well, all I know is that as I left the makeup room, I said to Shelby, one of our makeup artists,
01:21I said, what do you think?
01:22And she just went, brave.
01:25Let's see how that energy continues throughout the show.
01:28That kind of courage that we need, Samuel.
01:29Yeah.
01:30Let's get into today's top stories.
01:31And broadcaster Antoinette Latouf has won her unlawful termination case against the ABC.
01:37The federal court found she was unlawfully sacked from her fill-in radio job in 2023 for
01:42sharing a social media post about the Israel-Gaza conflict.
01:45The ABC has been ordered to pay her $70,000 compensation.
01:49Deliberately starving and killing children is a war crime.
01:54Today the court has found that punishing someone for sharing facts about these war crimes is also illegal.
02:04I was punished for my political opinion.
02:07Opposition leader Susan Lee used her first major speech as Liberal leader to reveal the
02:12party plans to take a long, hard look at itself.
02:14She's announced a wide-ranging review examining, among other issues, a lack of female representation
02:19and the party's energy policy.
02:21Lee also acknowledged the scale of their defeat hasn't been lost on her or her colleagues.
02:26We didn't just lose.
02:29We got smashed.
02:32Totally smashed.
02:34And if any story deserves the tip of the hat, Samuel, get ready.
02:37Aussie sprint sensation Gout Gout has stunned the athletics world by breaking his own national
02:42200-metre record while making his European debut.
02:45Having put his year 12 studies on hold to compete, the 17-year-old stole the show at Ostrava
02:50in the Czech Republic.
02:52His performance already prompting comparisons to legend Usain Bolt.
02:56A battle between these two.
02:57And Gout working so hard to get to him.
02:59And he gets there.
03:00Gout takes it by a metre.
03:01And moving away.
03:0320-0-4.
03:04Incredible.
03:05So good.
03:06Incredible.
03:07The lesson is stay in school or be really fast at running.
03:09Do you know that this year on the Aussie music charts, not a single Australian artist has
03:16made it to number one?
03:17I didn't know that.
03:18Right now, our freshest new talent is being frozen out by Florian Aria's system, but not
03:22for long.
03:23The year was 2003.
03:26Madonna and Britney's Pash was breaking the dial-up internet.
03:29A young Robert Mills was capturing hearts and minds on Australian idols.
03:33And this banger was beginning its journey to chart domination.
03:38Cause I just can't look and it's killing me.
03:43But 22 years later, why the bloody hell is Mr. Brightside still sitting in our top 50?
03:49I guess great music stands up no matter when it was released.
03:53And the killer's Mr. Brightside, that's just one of them tunes, isn't it?
03:57It's all to do with the way the Aria charts are measured.
04:04Basically, the streamers have ruined everything.
04:07Big upping international heavy hitters and old favourites at the expense of local up and
04:12comers.
04:13Unfortunately, last couple of years we've seen weeks and weeks on the Aria charts where
04:17it's been 90, 95% American artists, which is quite worrying for our industry.
04:23This week's top 50 singles chart, a stark example of that.
04:27Featuring not one Aussie artist.
04:30Which is why Aria is making some changes.
04:33Songs which have lingered in the charts for years, like these ones.
04:37We'll now move to a special new chart called Aria on Replay for older hits.
04:54Our goals in changing the charts were really to make them more dynamic, so to see more change
04:59week to week, month to month.
05:00The main charts set to be restricted to songs released in the past two years, giving fresh
05:05faces like these ones a chance to chart.
05:09It's a really powerful tool for them to be able to use when they're talking to international
05:22promoters, festivals, playlists.
05:23It's real currency for them to be able to say, look at the success we've achieved in our
05:28home market.
05:29So is it time for our old favourites to...
05:32And make way for the next generation of Aussie superstars.
05:38I did wonder why the windows were all steaming up at the office.
05:52But genuinely I think this is good because Australian artists do deserve a platform because
05:56they are fighting above their weight.
05:58I mean, you want to get them...
05:59So the world at large knows the kind of talent we've got here.
06:02But it needs to be shaken up if the Goo Goo Dolls are still in.
06:05Like, that was around during dial-up, Sam.
06:08Okay?
06:09I grew up with classical music.
06:12Yes, so I didn't really understand that story at all.
06:16Guys, now, some moments on this show really stick with you, like wearing this hat.
06:21But for me it's the time Anthony Albanese and Stephen Miles from Queensland, the former
06:26Premier, they took this painfully long quiet ride in a cable car and I don't know why
06:29but I think it's a thing of beauty.
06:31This feels today our morning.
06:33Brekkie TV.
06:34Oh, well.
06:35Coming to...
06:36Yep.
06:37What?
06:39North.
06:40It's great.
06:42What's it?
06:43I'm riveting this stuff.
06:45Wow.
06:46Oh.
06:47Oh, no.
06:49Okay.
06:50Come on, boys.
06:51What are they looking at?
06:52Fellas.
06:54Someone say something.
06:55Birds.
06:56Birds.
06:57Okay, that's good.
06:58Oh, no.
06:59Now, to put that in context, why I wanted to bring it, just remember that Peter Dutton
07:06was less charismatic than that.
07:08So, that's just a little sneak peek to Australian politics.
07:11I've got some bad news.
07:12What?
07:13The suits in head office don't like the hat.
07:15They don't like the hat.
07:16Is it Denya?
07:17It's not.
07:19Everything's ultimately Denya.
07:21It does come back to Denya.
07:22Yeah.
07:23They want it gone for like the rest of the show.
07:24Yep.
07:25Yep.
07:26Bobo's the only one in a hat, Sam.
07:28I'm afraid.
07:29With that sigh, we've got to take a break.
07:31Sorry, mate.
07:32We'll be back.
07:33I'm just a messenger.
07:34Sam, it's okay.
07:35Coming up, how a verbal spray from President Trump's left the world in shock.
07:39Blast from Hollywood superstars to Aussie icons.
07:42We revisit all the great guests that have crossed The Project Desk.
07:45You're watching The Project Desk.
07:46You're watching The Project.
07:47But you must be some kind of superstar.
07:56Welcome back.
07:57This is The Project.
07:58It's hard to believe Donald Trump can still shock us, but he's done just that by launching
08:02an extraordinary verbal attack on Israel and Iran.
08:06Donald Trump has gone to The Hague for the NATO summit, but before he flew out of Washington,
08:11he unleashed on Israel and Iran, accusing both countries of violating the ceasefire deal
08:16he helped put in place.
08:17That's not what we want, I'll tell you.
08:19And I'm telling you, I'm not happy about that, Israel.
08:21And the tirade didn't end there.
08:23The US president dropping a bomb of his own.
08:25They basically have two countries that have been fighting so long and so hard that they
08:31don't know what the they're doing.
08:33Do you understand that?
08:34Meanwhile, the Trump administration has been quick to dispute reports that US airstrikes
08:38did not destroy the core components of Iran's three nuclear sites.
08:43Not only did we destroy the Iranian nuclear program, we did it with zero American casualties
08:49and that's what happens when you've got strong American leadership.
08:52That's despite a classified Pentagon damage assessment leaked to media outlets, suggesting
08:57that the program's only been set back by maybe a few months.
09:01The White House claims the report was leaked by a low-level loser.
09:05But at least for now, the ceasefire between Israel and Iran seems to be holding, with both
09:10nations acknowledging it's in place.
09:12It's like the world is bonkers isn't it?
09:15Yeah.
09:16Well yeah, my partner was really concerned about this stuff and for a while I'm always like
09:19Trump, he just says a lot of garbage, he just moved through it.
09:22With this situation in the Middle East, I'm like, oh no, we've got that man behind the wheel.
09:25Yeah, yeah, yeah.
09:26Because the difference between the first Trump and the second Trump presidency, the first
09:28one was pyrotechnics and show.
09:30Yeah.
09:31And then this is all reality.
09:33Going back right to tariffs and everything, it's a totally different thing.
09:36And we look forward to taking you through all the coming years.
09:40Well, because we are in our final days, please hold your tears.
09:43What?
09:44I know, I know.
09:45We have had some time for reflection and part of that, Thorno, is that you've been with us
09:49almost since the very start of this show.
09:52Yeah.
09:53What have been some of your favourite moments?
09:55I was reflecting on it, I think I started here in like mid 2011.
10:00What?
10:01And I've just been coming in and out.
10:02I'm like a cold sore you couldn't get rid of.
10:04I just keep coming through it all.
10:06But when this was announced, I was thinking about it, when I started here, like I was in
10:11a share house just living with some mates.
10:13Yeah.
10:14And now I've got a lovely partner, I've got my two kids and it's been the, what is that,
10:1914 years since I've been here.
10:21Amazing.
10:22Because of the breadth of the show, I've just had so many experiences and crazy stories
10:27in the show.
10:28And you've had experiences that other people on the show have, like a lot of people have
10:30sat on this desk.
10:31Sure.
10:32Very few of them, if any, have become a meme.
10:35Oh yeah.
10:36And you managed this.
10:37This was, I mean.
10:38I remember this.
10:39Cracking meme.
10:40Look at this.
10:41Just figure this one out.
10:42Oh, okay.
10:45Look at that face.
10:47This, no, no, no.
10:49Okay.
10:50That is Rebecca Black who came on the show.
10:51Yes.
10:52Friday.
10:53Friday.
10:54Friday.
10:55Friday.
10:56Friday.
10:57Friday.
10:58Now she released that song called, how old was she, Georgie?
10:59She was on the show and she's really, she's come into herself and she came on to really
11:05show that now she's, you know, she's an adult who enjoys the high life.
11:09And she came on, as you can see, with a top that was slightly revealing.
11:12Yeah.
11:13Yes.
11:14And I was sitting across her and Sam, you're constantly in that position.
11:16You're the closest person to the guest.
11:17Yeah.
11:18Yeah.
11:19Yeah.
11:20Yeah.
11:21Yeah.
11:22Yeah.
11:23Yeah.
11:24Yeah.
11:25I just kept thinking, just look at her eyes.
11:26Yeah.
11:27Yeah.
11:28Yeah.
11:29Yeah.
11:30Yeah.
11:31Yeah.
11:32Yeah.
11:33Yeah.
11:34I could put a psychopath staring straight at her.
11:35Hey, if you wore the hat it would have been fine.
11:38Now, my favourite thing that you started here doing, and it's a segment they don't do
11:42on the project anymore.
11:43No.
11:44It's fantastic.
11:45So many people started on this show doing it was the Metro Whip.
11:46Oh.
11:47Yeah.
11:48And so yeah, you started on the Metro Whip.
11:49I think we have your first appearance.
11:51You're kidding.
11:52Now over to the gorgeous Dave Thornton in Melbourne.
11:53Oh look at him.
11:54Hello Dave.
11:55What?
11:56Yeah, g'day guys.
11:57Now as we all know, Melbourne likes festivals about as much as Charlie Sheen likes the phrase,
12:01sure a little bit more couldn't hurt this is one festival you don't want to
12:05miss out on guys it's the Buddhist festival it's on the whole weekend
12:09Saturday and Sunday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. it's got monks it's got meditation
12:15classes calligraphy and it's got these fine ladies dancing hit it girls look
12:20at these guys it's kind of like a Buddhist
12:22and as you can see when I threw to them they all looked at me like I was made of cardboard
12:37for what I was saying it's been a pleasure that's made the career you see before
12:43what's up this is Amy she's one of our fantastic producers at this show Amy what's coming up

14:34of all the clips you chose chicken hands thank you
14:37yeah yeah well but I think it's relevant because people wouldn't know this you were meant to be here
14:41you were meant to be joining us at the desk
14:44what happened mate chicken hands I'm so sorry um I just yeah I know look I just I didn't know the
14:51truth is it's not chicken hands it is I um I've got the flu and the whole family has the flu so
14:57is all infected in this and I didn't I thought I'm supposed to be there to cuddle you and say
15:02congratulations on an amazing show but I didn't want to give your parting gift the flu so I'm I'm at
15:08home Jimmy I want to focus in on your amazing characters two new additions have really been
15:13going off online let's have a squeeze in them here
15:15Elon we need some space
15:18sir I have a lot of space it's called spacex
15:21in this climate do you feel nervous about impersonating those guys just because there's
15:28some pretty big power players there they got a lot of weight they got a lot of powers oh the
15:34auctions I think I've got a lot of issues if I want to go to America right now I think that um
15:40we are I am I am launching a new tour and it's definitely not going over there I don't think
15:45I could even get in Hawaii uh something they're checking phones I mean it's not gonna take a lot
15:51to just be like no thanks get out of here although I will say I do own uh make America great again
15:58hats for the purposes of making the video so maybe I would have to put that on um it'd be like no I
16:03love the guy does the hat come in handy as well at those rallies you go to no yeah of course yeah
16:10yeah yeah oh it's like chicken hands if you want to get out of anything just chuck that on well this
16:16interesting Jimmy because Sam brought in his hat to make the wild wild west great again
16:20really nice god damn it that one was good okay so Jimmy the nationwide tour what can we expect
16:29I think about it as I can't make any decisions right I've got my crux of you know different
16:33characters and different things that'll go in it but I can't I can't decide on anything until it gets
16:38a little bit closer because what if something wild happens I want to stick it in there so
16:42it'll be what you see online the things that go well online uh they'll definitely be in there
16:47um but again it's like one night only kind of vibes in each in each capital city so we're going
16:53to make it special like the full Jimmy experience um in the theater there so it'll be it'll be lots
16:58of fun fantastic one of my favorite things you do Jimmy uh at your shows you often have the kiss cam
17:02going and you did it on our show I remember look at that oh that's right it's one of your favorites
17:07greatest moment I don't have a question I just wanted to show the nation
17:10will will the kiss cam be making a comeback because you know asking for a friend well if
17:17you're there Sam then it's always kiss cam is available uh yeah I'll come to your show and I'll
17:22bring my kiss cam to your show and we'll just have a have a moment no I do pretty serious stand-up
17:28comedy mate so uh no I would love that please do please do you kind of reek more of vaudeville
17:36right now if I'm going to be honest hello my baby hello my honey if the show wasn't getting cancelled
17:41I would be fired immediately if they're bringing back the new age Thomas the tank engine you can be
17:46the not so pat controller there's another job you're looking for a job it's for jimmy's nationwide
17:53in real life that's uh double e l to uh go on sale monday in the meantime would you please thank
17:59jimmy ray thanks guys congratulations again we'll see you soon or or not by the way I like you and
18:08him trading impressions like that you didn't mind it I do like it but the thing about it is we've not
18:13dave hughes the original on the show he's not here obviously for I don't know what he's doing
18:17you do an amazing hughesie can you just throw to the break as him oh you want okay hughesie for
18:23cheap okay here we go coming up experts reveal the two places in the world say for nuclear war
18:31but guess what's good news for oddies oh that's great you're watching the project
18:36well today's top stories and more good news for homeowners tonight a bigger than expected drop in
18:52cpi data has boosted the chance of an interest rate cut next month headline inflation went from
18:572.4 percent in april to 2.1 percent in may and underlying inflation also fell to its lowest level
19:03in almost four years which puts it right in the middle of the rba's target range we're making this
19:09progress together quicker and we're further along the path than economists were anticipating today
19:17and that's a very good thing and as hughesie told us before the break there's been plenty of talk
19:22about nuclear war as a result of heightened tensions between iran israel and the u.s so one expert has
19:27weighed in on the safest places to be in the event of a nuclear apocalypse and she reckons it's
19:32australia and new zealand seems we offer the best option for survival because our distance from
19:36major nuclear powers our location our isolation which would allow us to sustain agriculture we need
19:43to keep it a secret though surely yeah well to sydney real estate prices are already a nightmare
19:47imagine when this gets out i just can't imagine it's going to be a toll on me and i got a bomb shelter
19:53six million we'll pay for that i can't see you going that well in the apocalypse samuel well i reckon
20:00everyone will be dressing like this after the nuclear apocalypse yeah this is just getting in
20:04ahead yeah yeah i'm a trendsetter everyone knows that yeah you're so right well for years we've
20:08brought you stories of aussies who've lost all their money to faceless scammers our hope was that
20:14one day the big banks that failed them would finally be forced to take responsibility and
20:18compensate compensate them for their losses sadly that hasn't happened and now we're running out of
20:23shows so this is the update we would have liked to have run if the government and the banks
20:28had done their job cybercrime romance scams fake phone calls and fake texts even the savviest among
20:36us have seen their bank accounts drain due to this kind of fraud in 2024 australians lost about two
20:42billion dollars to scammers now finally the prime minister has announced the government will take
20:47real action to stop it for too long the banks have failed to do enough to protect aussies under this
20:52new law the banks will be responsible for refunding lost money to customers this is the strong action
20:57long called for by both australians and my husband sam taunton in a surprising twist the banks welcomed
21:04the legislation the head of west commands nab telling the project look we made about 30 billion in profit
21:10last year and that's after tax naturally we used that windfall to buy four labubu super yachts but
21:14then i was visited in the night by some ghosts who were all like we wear the chains we forge in life
21:18so then we decided to use what was left to stop aussie retirees from losing their life savings just because
21:22they clicked on the wrong link scrooge out indeed and this move is something genuine consumer advocates
21:27are thrilled with this is the news we've all been hoping for we are going to see results just like in
21:33the uk where 86 percent of scam losses are reimbursed there have been concerted efforts to combat fraud over
21:40the years the bank's regularly touting their illuminated locks and protective birds of prey
21:46in 2025 the albanese government passed the scams protection framework act which split responsibility
21:51for fraud prevention between banks telcos and social media platforms who would share liability
21:57and face fines of up to 50 million dollars for non-compliance preventing a crime from happening
22:03is much better than coming back later and compensating somebody who's been damaged because of that crime
22:08but the lack of any compensation left victims of fraud twisting in the wind many of whom we spoke to
22:14over the years happened back in august less than five minutes and it was all done my partner and i
22:19lost twenty thousand dollars close to sixty thousand dollars all of my internet banking details it was
22:25unbelievable that it wasn't the bank lose all that money over one little transaction the compensation
22:30itself is the incentive that will drive our businesses to invest in measures to prevent and disrupt scams
22:38without being on the hook for those losses what is pushing banks to do better
22:44while this might all sound like a fantasy it's as real as the other big stories from today like
22:48the end of all war scientists reversing climate change and sam taunton winning a gold loggy things
22:53that once seemed impossible unlike the prevention of financial fraud something that is in fact very
22:59possible okay
23:01thank god i wore my good hat
23:07back to reality slightly because those laws obviously have not actually been introduced margot
23:11robbie believe it or not isn't married to samuel taunton despite his hat i think she could be prime
23:17minister though so we will check in on that harriet spring is one of the many people who has shared
23:21her story with us over the years she lost 1.6 million dollars to a scammer harriet thanks for being with us
23:27once again why should the banks be the ones financially responsible for scams uh without
23:33skin in the game they're never going to pick up uh their their socks they answer to the shareholders
23:38they don't answer to their customers so um unless they're on the hook for um reimbursing they're never
23:45going to improve their systems or improve uh the the outcomes for for customers it's just not in their
23:51interest and in fact they're almost disincentivized to improve um uh their protection on scams because
23:58they make a profit from it the more people have to borrow because they've had money money stolen the
24:03more uh interest the banks own since we last spoke though the government has passed the scams protection
24:10framework act what did you think of that yeah um look it's better than nothing that's so that's great
24:17but um not only will you have to take on the banks as a victim but you're up against the the telcos and
24:24the meta transnationals i mean talk about david versus goliath asymmetry there's also a suggestion
24:33in the spf that um smaller banks will be held to a lower standard so what if you bank with a smaller
24:39bank you don't deserve the same protection harriet we've been speaking to you about this for a while
24:43some things have not changed for example your glasses still spectacular uh and i suspect that
24:51will never change thank you i have however noticed noticed some changes just as a as a customer like
24:57as a consumer i've noticed banks seem to be doing certain things a bit better for example when i try
25:03to send money now i get a lot more warnings or verifications than i reckon i would have got even
25:08six months ago i don't know if you've noticed the same thing but but if so has that made you
25:13optimistic optimistic uh optimistic and also pessimistic yeah it's great but yet again they're
25:20putting the onus on the victim it's almost like they they prompt you with questions to say have
25:26you checked have you checked because if you say yes it's entirely on you so in a way you could be
25:31cynical and think well are they just making sure that the liability firmly remains far away from them
25:40or are they introducing protections i don't know i'd like to think that the banks are good guys but
25:45i from my experience i'm kind of a bit disillusioned on that front i think we all are in that respect
25:52harriet but i would like to echo waleed's point that your glasses do look spectacular so thank you so much
25:57for holding up the fashion end of the bargain because sam is dragging it very low with his
26:02top hat on i have you'll know i'm dressed as a 1930s banker and i've traveled through time and i'm
26:09disgusted at the state of the industry my colleagues would not stand for this thank you thank you i
26:14appreciate that well okay harriet i guess to sum everything up here why do you think the idea is
26:21so crazy that prime minister margot robbie would marry me you're asking dress like that is it the
26:26hat i think it could be the hat is it the hat no comment i'll claim the i think if could i borrow your
26:31glasses i think that's it i think that might that might give you the edge that might give you the
26:38edge yeah that's how you complete the 1930s yes yes margot we're going back in time to when everything
26:45was great all right harriet thank you so much for your time once again thank you so much oh you're
26:51a banker i'm a banker now guys someone who does do it all and uh yesterday i played a tribute to
26:56to gold coast mayor tom tate i want to do one today to someone who i dearly love in the television

35:52but like this that was so steamy god every time i've seen it i go it's like too much for my
35:58how did you cope today with learning that taylor swift had been on the show and that luke mcgregor
36:03also like just every and i love luke mcgregor but come on where was my phone call
36:09what was i doing i would have dropped anything on this earth i think you might have been in primary
36:13school and you would have broken the restraining order you just couldn't do it you're sorry there's
36:21still time taylor there's still time we've still got a couple of days that was a wonderful package
36:26put together it was so great so wonderful you are watching the project we'll be back
36:32now for more than a decade we've covered stories on every aspect of the world around us from
36:46protests to pandemics raging floods to devastating bushfires all shedding light on the moments that
36:53mattered and the people whose lives were changed forever they've just ripped him around the corner
36:58into an alleyway despite these terrible conditions that we are seeing everyone is staying at home
37:02if they still have one the police have just had to come through and bring them out to safety in
37:07a convoys lording is a big success this idea that kim jong-un has promised he will not do any
37:12more rocket tests i think we should be cautious of that though what's really unusual about this
37:17protest is both the scale of it also the police presence which is i've got to say phenomenal i haven't
37:23seen anything quite like this for 16 years we've seen the best and the worst of humanity harrowing
37:30imagery contrasted with stories of strength and survival we actually just saw a little homemade
37:36explosive device go off there and the police water cannon has moved straight in none of us need to live
37:41under fear freedom from fear is our hope and wish on hong kong your mom sounded like she was pretty
37:46awesome during the fire yeah she was she saved about a couple people's life moments that shocked
37:53tested us and changed the way we've seen the world in seconds police stormed the building following the
37:59sound of gunfire within a minute it was on gun just minutes from home eurydice sent a final
38:07heartbreaking message to her partner i'm almost home safe how about you six australians were on mh370
38:14i'm taking it minute by minute i've got two young kids so and i've got a three-year-old who's
38:18asking when's daddy gonna skype across borders and ballot boxes the stories that changed not
38:24just lives but society itself it's just unbelievable to think there's a chance that that union might
38:30break up after all that time and all they've been through over something like brexit no one has ever
38:36bothered to come looking for the truth sorry about pagi pagi saia hamush saia journalist
38:42story australia ali yasmin's ordeal is now over but there are still really significant questions
38:47for australia about how and why this could ever happen why when immigration officials had already
38:54concluded he was just 14 did the federal police go ahead and arrest him as an adult why is it important
39:00for you to come out to vote if you don't vote you don't have a right to complain for the next four
39:03years for anything so that's why i'm voting so you're here so that you can complain for the next
39:10four years exactly exactly we saw the places we gather made crime scenes and where we worship
39:17attacked the death toll has risen to 50. two children are among the victims the ages range from 2
39:24to 77 years old my uncle he got shot and unfortunately we haven't got any details right
39:30now we don't know whether he's alive we did a week after the attacks ardern announced sweeping reforms
39:35banning military-style assault rifles tonight more than 1600 people have been killed since palestinian
39:41group hamas launched their terror attack on israel i guess the best way to sum up the community is
39:46definitely shock upset but at the same time a lot of strength what's your hope for gaza and the
39:51palestinian people i never lost hope during any single point during this genocide step by step we
39:59could really rebuild gaza until gaza is spreading hope all across the globe we heard from the desperate
40:06fleeing persecution for freedom and safety shelling everywhere it's like hell yusuf al hariri is
40:13haunted by the conflict in syria and the fate of his missing brother khalil we are not animal we are not
40:19criminal we have rights across this border we are human we are human we are human you have kids we
40:26have kids this is andrea she's come with her two sons from guatemala and she says that they were
40:32basically being pressured by the drug gangs where they lived to join them and so they've run away
40:38images of a small boy whose body washed up on one of turkey's main tourist beaches has shocked the world
40:44i just can't look at that without things like it just makes me think how lucky lucky i am that i
40:49live in australia that my children live in australia that's what it is bearing witness to acts of
40:54defiance and resistance what turned you january 6th i cannot stand behind a candidate that would go
41:03against everything this country is founded on more than 10 000 people marched in saturday's black lives matter
41:10protest in melbourne there are lots of these kind of murals in northern ireland both sides of the
41:18conflict produce them they're striking they're unapologetic they're even militant they show that
41:23there are some people who hang on to the past here everyday people finding their voices amid extraordinary
41:29adversity pro-palestinian protesters from across australia gathered to condemn israeli aggression
41:39enough is enough not on our wall a molotov cocktail is thrown towards police inside a train station
41:46they respond with tear gas and later water cannons laced with chemical spray it makes you realize that
41:52these were people this is a country that will never fully see the end of the vietnam war
42:04it was only five and a half weeks ago that all those students in florida sheltered for their lives
42:09as their peers were slaughtered and what began as a facebook post has grown into this and in a country
42:16defined by natural disasters stories of devastating loss everything's gone
42:22we've got three kids everything everything's gone sometimes it does get you down been through about
42:27three really bad droughts but this one just goes on forever just beneath the surface things are far
42:35from fixed families are still struggling and still need the most basic of health they're not lying when
42:41they call this a rain bomb it is absolutely relentless it's hot it's smoky and the number of fires
42:48travis is checking on takes me by surprise first of all we're looking for people that are in general lives
42:55is our first priority then we go to property tony's once thriving cane cattle and rice farm has been
43:02frozen in time and mud since the first flood the big one where do you start and where to from here
43:09are the two two main sort of things that you think of but despite the pain incredible acts of kindness and
43:15bravery stewart brought his boat down and he rescued 20 odd people he had to go and unscrew a roof to
43:21get some people out through the roof a lady out of a tree a lady out of a tree a 73 year old woman was
43:26clinging to a tree locals have commandeered the community hall to deliver the things our government
43:31can't seem to relief and recovery we've been dealing with fires floods and three waves of pandemics
43:37and the best that we got was a wage freeze and a thank you who do you think are the real heroes of
43:42this pandemic heroes nurses
43:50sorry i've seen people have lost everything and yet they can still joke and get a smile on their face to
43:56those people that tell us that teenagers can't do anything i say that we were the only people that
44:02could have made this movement possible it was never just about the stories was always about the people
44:08um we will be your son
44:13it's just a miracle that the navy have found us i see it just one out of a million chance
44:20you just think yeah it's okay it's all going to be all right anybody i always think
44:33every day is beautiful just that some are more beautiful than others as we found out today
44:44can i just say being on this show it has been an unbelievable privilege when like i didn't study
44:49journalism and i've been able to sit next to broadcasters like yourselves just amazing
44:53talent that's been on this desk and people behind the scenes that have created stories like we just
44:57saw and it does get me quite emotional because again i'm i'm not used to being in this environment
45:02so when i do come in and see what this show can create and produce like that and tell stories that
45:08are unbelievable and if i could just get a bit of time to tell this story which is i was here on the desk
45:13when the uh unfortunate mosque shootings happened in christ church it happened all on a friday we came
45:19in we had to report on it as it was happening in the moment and i was privy to sit next to waleed as
45:24he delivered one of the best pieces i've ever seen on tv and i got to sit next to him and i was uh i was
45:31impressed i was uh in awe of what you did that day and i know it took it out of you emotionally and it was
45:39just a privilege to sit there and watch that kind of journalism and professionalism and heart
45:43be presented on tv so i just want to say thank you
45:46for the time
45:51very special shout out to hamish mcdonald because absolutely no one does it in the field
45:54like you don't believe in that that is it
45:58thank you
46:11you
