Plans have been submitted to completely transform Buchanan Galleries.
Transcript
00:00The owners of Buchanan Galleries have submitted plans to Glasgow City Council to completely
00:04transform the shopping centre, repurposing the existing structure and to build on empty
00:09surrounding land, going back on their previous idea to completely rebuild. The papers submitted
00:15include spaces for new leisure and dining concepts, including a destination food hall,
00:20delivering new public spaces with improved accessibility, the introduction of a new retail
00:26and leisure space in the Gap site beside the galleries and a new modern digital art strategy.
00:32The plan includes reconfiguring and modernising what is already there, adding more high street
00:37retail frontage on Buchanan Street. They also intend to replace the steps at the Glasgow
00:42Royal Concert Hall with a new sloped configuration. The team who created the plans have said that they
00:48presented a solution that truly reflects the priorities of the local community, that their
00:53plan is to prioritise swift enhancement of existing elements of the centre to provide quick benefits
00:58to visitors. Glasgow City Council leader Susan Aitken has said there is a renewed and growing
01:04confidence in Glasgow, with significant development across the city centre and rising investor interest.
01:10And the architecture team behind the project said the proposals align with the council's Golden
01:14Z vision and will both enhance street level activity and transform upper levels into leisure
01:19and hospitality spaces. They are adapting the structure to be more inviting and creating an
01:24animated and vibrant backdrop to what will become a key civic space. They also noted the approach will
01:31transform the top end of Buchanan Street, offering a blueprint on how we might reinvent similar
01:36structures in urban areas. What do you think of the development plans and what would you like to see
01:41shape the future of Glasgow City Centre?
