Julian Paterson is one of 10 Find Your Voice Collective songwriters who will perform an original song with Melbourne Symphony Orchestra at Melbourne's iconic Sidney Myer Music Bowl in February 2026.

00:00So I was tugging on Dad's jumper when I was four years old.

00:08I watched my brother put the little guitar away in a cupboard.

00:11He decided it wasn't for him.

00:13Then I took him to the cupboard and I pointed the cupboard.

00:17He's opened up the cupboard and I'm pointing.

00:20Oh, you want to play guitar?

00:23Eleven or so years ago in 2013, I lost the use of my left side

00:27and this arm was completely dead for 25 days.

00:30I didn't think I'd ever play guitar ever again.

00:35It was a struggle.

00:36It's been a bit of a struggle.

00:38It hasn't been easy being me.

00:43But I'll get there.

00:46That's where I've learned that we need support,

00:48we need friends, family.

00:52I don't have family.

00:54So this is, you know, Find Your Voice fills in that.

00:59I've witnessed the power of music in the last 12 months or more

01:02and there is such thing.

01:04And it's pretty incredible.

01:06Yeah, music's my life.

01:08Music's everything now.

01:11I've got control of my life now

01:13and I feel like I've got a life.

01:16I've got a life and just want to embrace it

01:20and then start really enjoying it.

01:22Now that I've got a taste on what it really is about,

01:25that life can be good and it's what we make it to.

01:29I can't just rely on everyone else to help us.

01:32You know, we've got to do a lot of the work ourselves.

01:36It's about my purpose.

01:37I'm no longer searching for my purpose in this world.

01:40Why am I here?

01:41I know why I'm here.

01:42I'm here to sing songs and I'm here to affect people with my words.

01:46Why are you working on my listing songs and songs and every incident?

01:55Yes, yes, yes.

01:57Why am I here?

02:08Instead, we will end up having people to write their work.
