A lorry carrying three barrels of urea-formaldehyde lost control at the Ayer Hitam toll plaza, causing one barrel to spill its chemical contents onto the road.

The Johor Fire and Rescue Department responded with a Hazmat unit and contained the spill using soil.

00:00A lorry transporting three barrels of chemicals lost control while navigating a corner at the
00:07Ayer Hitam Tol Plaza along the North-South Expressway, NSE, on Wednesday. The Johor Fire
00:14and Rescue Department's Operations Center received an emergency call at 4.48 p.m. A team of 13
00:21firefighters, along with a Fire Rapid Tender, FRT, and a Hazardous Materials Unit, Hazmat,
00:27was dispatched to the scene. According to Ayer Hitam Fire and Rescue Station Chief Mohamed Shamin,
00:34Mohamed Salikin, one of the three 1,000-litre barrels containing urea formaldehyde, UF,
00:41fell onto the road, ruptured, and spilled its contents. UF is commonly used in wood-based
00:47composite panels, adhesives, molded products, and as a slow-release nitrogen fertilizer in agriculture.
00:54Firefighters immediately took containment measures by covering the spill with soil to prevent further
01:00spread. The Hazmat Unit arrived at 7.50 p.m. to conduct odor detection and air monitoring in
01:07the vicinity. The chemical transport company arrived at midnight to retrieve the remaining
01:12two barrels. The operation, which concluded at 2.40 a.m., was officially handed over to the
01:18Kluwang Department of Environment for follow-up action.
