00:00Let's take a different dive into the world of breaking news.
00:0495.7 The Game, breaking news.
00:09Well, the Boston Celtics have gone and done it again.
00:13Kristaps Porzingis is on the move.
00:16This is a three-team trade.
00:19The Boston Celtics, Atlanta Hawks, and Brooklyn Nets
00:23are finalizing a three-team deal that will send Porzingis
00:28and a second-round pick to the Atlanta Hawks.
00:32That's where Porzingis will land.
00:34Terrence Mann, Atlanta's number 22 pick, are going to go to the Nets.
00:42And then the Celtics, boy, you want to talk about the finances of this,
00:46are basically getting a second-rounder.
00:51And, yeah, George Niang.
00:54That's what the Celtics are getting for Kristaps.
00:58George Niang and a second-round pick.
01:02Wow.
01:03Money, money, money, money.
01:05That's right.
01:05Yeah, that's it.
01:06We talked about it before, and I have my list here of the ten teams
01:10who had three or more players making 30-plus million.
01:15Boston's off the list.
01:16Yep, they had four.
01:17They had four.
01:18Now they have two.
01:18Exactly.
01:19And, you know, one of the two that they have is out for the year with a ruptured Achilles.
01:24So, man, Boston goes from a title, almost had a chance to win two
01:29if it wasn't for that darn Steph Curry guy.
01:32And next thing you know, you are dismantling your team,
01:37at least for the time being.
01:38And, you know, the rebuild is going to be around Brown and Tatum.
01:42And how do you feel if you're Jalen Brown right now, where, I mean,
01:47your running mate is out, and now two of your other high-priced guys have been dealt?
01:51Right.
01:52You're very, very rich if you're Jalen Brown, and you're not going to win next year.
01:56And I think that that was probably already evident.
01:59Even if you keep Kristaps and Drew Holiday, Jason Tatum's out,
02:03and the Celtics are not, like, this is not catching anybody by surprise.
02:08They needed to financially reboot, and the Jason Tatum injury
02:12probably only accelerated those thoughts, would be my guess.
02:16Absolutely.
02:17You know?
02:17It probably made it so you were going to dismantle more than just one of your high-priced guys.
02:23If Tatum wasn't hurt, maybe it's just Porzingis that you deal,
02:26or maybe just Holiday.
02:28But now that you don't have Tatum, you take two of your top guys, salary-wise,
02:33and you trade them.
02:33And so now it's a full reset for Boston this coming year.
02:37I really do wonder, and we'll get back to the Giants here in a second,
02:40and George Conto's going to join us at 4.15.
02:42But now that we've got another one of these, and what of this?
02:45I think this is five sort of, like, very newsy-type trades since last Sunday.
02:53In nine days.
02:54Because I think it was last Sunday that Desmond Bain got traded.
02:58It was the same day that Rafael Devers came to the Giants.
03:01So that was nine days ago.
03:03Well, Desmond Bain was first, and since then, you've had Drew Holiday,
03:09Kristaps Porzingis, the Jordan Poole trade earlier today, and obviously Kevin Durant.
03:14You've got all of that before we even get to the draft.
03:17Yep.
03:18Is this, you know what I mean?
03:21I kind of like, I got Russell Crowe bouncing around in my brain right now.
03:25If Adam Silver were sitting here right now, like, is this what you, I mean, is he,
03:32is he looking at everybody going, are you not entertained?
03:35Like, I don't know if this is what you wanted.
03:39I really, I really don't.
03:41I don't know if this is what you wanted.
03:43Well, it's the player movement era, and it's the player empowerment era,
03:47except for now when you're in this spot, and you have these teams that are spending so much money
03:52on their salaries that they get into the penalty portion of the various aprons,
03:58and so you've got to make these moves.
04:00And I'm just looking at the list of salaries for next year,
04:03and Kevin Durant is No. 4 on the list.
04:06He's been traded.
04:08Lillard is No. 6.
04:09He's going to be out.
04:10Tatum's No. 9.
04:11He's going to be out.
04:13And you go all the way down and through this list,
04:15and a lot of these guys who are making the huge money, you might be on the move.
04:19Like, Philadelphia is a team that I'm just fascinated by,
04:22like, can you really afford to spend that much in salary on a team that's really not that good?
04:29Yeah, I don't know.
04:31I mean, again, the Celtics with this move are now officially out of the second apron,
04:36so I know that that is the goal.
04:39That's what they were talking about with the Cronkies in Denver.
04:44That's what got this conversation going.
04:46Yeah, Grandy, what's up?
04:47What do you got on this?
04:48Well, okay, so what's going to the Nets, I think, might be most interesting for the Warriors.
04:52Because the Nets are one of the only teams out there that has cap space to sign Jonathan Kaminga.
04:58They gave up essentially no money, like, no players that are making any money.
05:02We don't know exactly where the picks are coming from.
05:04My guess would be they gave up a second-round pick or two,
05:07and they got back Terrence Mann, who is making $15 million each of the next three years.
05:13So this cuts into their cap space.
05:16A little.
05:17I mean, they...
05:17Not a ton.
05:18They still have cap space.
05:19But they have less room now.
05:21Like, for sure.
05:22For sure, this, in my mind, my mind was already in this place.
05:28But Brooklyn is not going to come break off a huge offer to Jonathan Kaminga.
05:34Probably not.
05:35I don't think they were anyway, and this furthers that.
05:38They are not going to walk in and go,
05:40okay, Kaminga, four years and $120 million.
05:45They're not going to do that.
05:47And that was the worry.
05:48So I agree with you, Grandy.
05:50Like, if I'm Jonathan Kaminga's agent, this is not a good trade for me.
05:56This is not a good trade.
05:58This removes even more leverage, if you will.
06:02In some ways, but just looking at what Brooklyn has on the books for next year,
06:07without this trade, they were at $64 million in total,
06:11which is about what Steph Curry's going to make.
06:13So, you know, you've got Nick Claxton making $25 million,
06:17Cam Johnson's making $20.5 million.
06:19And that's pretty much it for your commitment.
06:22So even though you're giving, man, $15 million a year,
06:25you still have a healthy, healthy dose of money that you can throw at Kaminga if you want.
06:31You've got room, but you would have to think that if you're going to go out there
06:35and spend that amount of it, you would have to think that that's like your future dude.
06:41And I don't think they do.
06:42And we were already hearing.
06:44We were already hearing.
06:45Bobby Marks said it to us three weeks ago.
06:47Like, doesn't sound like Brooklyn, like, would Brooklyn get in on these conversations?
06:52If somebody wanted to facilitate sign-in trades and things like that?
06:56Yeah, Brooklyn can get in the conversation.
06:59Is Brooklyn coming with the thunder?
07:01I don't mean the Oklahoma City thunder.
07:03Right.
07:03You know what I mean?
07:05Are they about to bring the wood to this conversation?
07:08No.
07:08But if they come with, I don't know, let's just say it's four years and $100 million,
07:13$25 million per year.
07:15I don't think they're going to do that.
07:16But let's just, let's say they do.
07:18Okay, let's say they do.
07:19Do the Warriors match that?
07:20Would the Warriors match $25 million a year for four years of Jonathan Kaminga with the
07:26risk of what you were talking about before?
07:28Like, if you do want to then, you know, pivot off of Kaminga at the deadline, is his value
07:33going to be commensurate with what that contract is?
07:36That's a tough question to answer.
07:38I think that's the number where it starts to get a little queasy.
07:41Yeah, I agree with you.
07:42If it's four years and $80 million total, you match that $20 million a year.
07:46I think that's an easy match for the Warriors.
07:48Yeah, probably.
07:48But I also think the Warriors, based on what we're hearing and what we're watching them
07:53do, I think the Warriors are comfortable that that is not going to happen, the scenario
08:00that you just laid out.
08:01Yeah.
08:01I think the number you lay out puts it in an interesting spot, a debatable spot, for
08:07sure.
08:07Maybe a little bit uncomfortable, but I really believe that what the Warriors really don't
08:12want to do is let them walk for nothing.
08:14But I think they sit here today, based on everything that we've heard in many, many NBA circles,
08:20they are not concerned that Brooklyn or anybody else is going to walk in and do that.
08:25$100 million for Jonathan Kaminga.
08:28Yeah.
08:28I don't think that's going to happen.
08:30I just, I'm fascinated, and what you said earlier is totally accurate about the league's
08:35going to let you know what they think of Jonathan Kaminga based on, you know, what contract
08:40offers come or don't come for Kaminga.
08:43But I also think that there's a certain amount of resetting that teams out there are going
08:48to have to do.
08:49And, you know, I don't want to dwell too much on Philly, but you look at Maxey's making
08:54$38 million next year.
08:55You've got Paul George, who's making $52 million, and Embiid's making $55 million.
09:02So if you're Philadelphia, can you really afford to have those three big salaries?
09:07And, you know, other teams that have a lot of those high-priced guys, it feels like there's
09:12going to be some belt tightening around the league.
09:14I mean, that's what we're watching.
09:16Right.
09:16That's what we're watching right now.
09:17So you're Kaminga, and you're a restricted free agent in a marketplace where not a lot of
09:21teams are looking to just shovel hundreds of millions around anymore.
09:25Yeah.
09:26I don't know, man.
09:27I've gone back and forth already five times just in the last two weeks as to whether or
09:33not I think Jonathan Kaminga is going to be on this team next year.
09:36I fully hear where you're coming from.
09:38This idea of the most likely scenario is that he gets signed to some kind of number that
09:45makes everybody maybe either comfortable or only a little bit uncomfortable.
09:49And then you revisit this whole thing down the road if things don't change, if they don't
09:54get better between all sides.
09:57I hear that.
09:59I could see that.
10:00But I also think if that happens, it's only because the sign-and-trade scenarios are so
10:06complex.
10:07I do think that if the Warriors could find one, they would like that.
10:11I think that's what they would like to do.
10:13I think they'd like to go in a different direction.
10:15I just don't know if there are any other directions.
10:17Yeah, and I do think if they went the sign-and-trade route, it would most likely have to involve
10:23another player leaving the Warriors to make up some of the money to where if you sign
10:29them to a $24 million deal, you're only getting $12 million back in player.
10:33And that's not the kind of player who's going to really come in and help you.
10:38Agreed.
10:38Yeah, I agree with you.
10:39I think it would be a complex layered deal with multiple teams and all of their interests
10:44coming to the party.
10:45You're listening to 95.7 The Game, KGMZ FM and HD1 San Francisco on Odyssey Sports Station
10:51and the home of the Golden State Warriors and Valkyries, always live on the free Odyssey
10:56app, coming to you live from the Laughing Monk Studios.
10:59Yeah, Granny, what's up?
11:00You guys have been talking a lot about the impact the CBA is having on these teams making
11:04all these trades.
11:05And that's, of course, the motivation for the Celtics who are now out of the second apron.
11:09If you want to see firsthand how important cap space is, the Nets, one of the only teams
11:16with cap space, are getting a first-round pick.
11:20They are being awarded a first-round pick just for making this trade happen.
11:24They're taking the extra money that allows this trade to work.
11:27And for doing that, they're getting a first-round pick.
11:29That's how eager these teams are to get out of danger in the aprons.
11:33They're willing to give up picks to make it happen.
11:35Yep.
11:36Yeah, the number 22 pick in the draft is what Grandy is talking about.
11:40Right.
11:40Is going to the Nets.
11:41And that is Boston's pick, essentially?
11:44No.
11:44Well, no.
11:45It's Atlanta's pick.
11:46Right now it's Atlanta's pick.
11:47And Brooklyn gets it.
11:49So what Atlanta wants, I mean, if you really, the second-round picks are whatever.
11:53These are throw-ins.
11:54These are pieces.
11:54George Yang, whatever.
11:55But, essentially, what you're seeing is that Boston wants to get out from underneath the money of Kristaps Porzingis.
12:04Atlanta is keen on getting another piece down low and actually a good player in Porzingis.
12:13And then what the Nets are doing, the Nets are just jumping in to take on some money.
12:20Because they're able to do that.
12:23But the award, the reward that they get for doing that is the number 22 pick in this year's draft.
12:29Right.
12:30So you are rewarded if you will just show up with some money.
12:33That's right.
12:34Yeah.
12:35Show up with money and just house some salary.
12:38And we're going to give you a first-round pick to help facilitate this deal.
12:42And you look at Atlanta now, and Boston comes off my list.
12:47Atlanta goes on the list as a team that has three players making $30 million or more.
12:52Who's the other?
12:53You've got Trey Young, obviously.
12:55Yep.
12:55And Chris Dapps.
12:57And who's the third?
12:59Trey Young.
13:00I just had a second to go.
13:02Wait for it.
13:02Jalen Johnson makes exactly $30 million.
13:06Jeez.
13:07Yep.
13:08Jalen Johnson makes $30 million.
13:10And then $30 and $30 and $30 and $30.
13:13Good Lord.
13:13It's $30 for $30 for $30 for $30.
13:15Yeah.
13:15Until 2030.
13:16So, yeah, Atlanta.
13:18And I guess if you're Atlanta, you add a good player in Porzingis and you think, maybe we
13:23can go for it in the Eastern Conference where...
13:26I mean, the East is a mess.
13:27Right.
13:28So, if you're Atlanta, maybe you think, you know, this is our chance to go for it.
13:32Jump into the fray by adding Chris Dapps.
13:35Look at the Eastern Conference teams right now.
13:37Like, just roll through what you're looking at with what's happened.
13:41Okay?
13:42The Eastern Conference teams that sort of matter as well.
13:46You know what I mean?
13:46You got Washington getting rid of Jordan Poole.
13:49They're getting out from under some money.
13:50Whatever.
13:50Like, Washington's not going to contend next year.
13:53Charlotte's not going to contend.
13:55But you see what Brooklyn's role in all of this is.
13:58Cleveland, largely, at least in this moment, they're still intact.
14:03But they sort of got exposed as not what we all thought they were in the playoffs.
14:10Here's Boston.
14:11They have just gotten rid of three of their top four players.
14:15One of them to injury.
14:16Two of them are off of the team.
14:18The New York Knicks are still looking for a coach.
14:20The Indiana Pacers just lost Tyrese Halliburton for next year.
14:24The Bucs just lost Damian Lillard and Giannis might request a trade.
14:28The Detroit Pistons are super interesting, but they're young.
14:31And are they ready to move up?
14:33Maybe.
14:34Orlando becomes the most interesting sort of riser in the league
14:38because they've got young, good players and then just added Desmond Bain.
14:43Then you get to Miami.
14:45They were in the Kevin Durant hunt.
14:46Didn't get him.
14:48And then, next on this list, the number nine seed is the Atlanta Hawks.
14:51Yep.
14:52And is it crazy to think that they could be a top five seed next year?
14:57Not at all.
14:58No, nothing's crazy in that conference.
15:00Like, Washington, okay, you're probably not going to be great.
15:03And Brooklyn, I don't even know if you'll have enough players to field a team at this pace.
15:08But the other one's Philadelphia, and I keep dwelling on them
15:12because they've got three highly paid players who could be stars.
15:17And, you know, if they can all ever be healthy, if Embiid is healthy enough to play basketball
15:22and Paul George has anything left, Tyrese Maxey had a good year doing it by himself.
15:27So, I guess Philadelphia could emerge as a team on the rise in the Eastern Conference.
15:32I mean, any of them could, yes.
15:35But, I mean, Philadelphia, they're their own planet right now.
15:39Yeah.
15:39You know what I mean?
15:40Because of the money that's tied up into somebody who sits more often than he plays.
15:44And I have no idea where that's going to go next.
15:46It didn't sound like the season ended and they're like,
15:48yeah, we've got to figure it out.
15:49I'll be back next year.
15:50It doesn't sound like that at all.
15:51It sounds very much like something that's going to dog him for the rest of his life.
15:54$55 million this year, then $58, $62, and a player option for $67 million.
16:01Hello, Joel.
16:03Absolutely incredible.
