00:00One thing I could tell right away is when I picked him up and held his chest, you could
00:06feel his heart.
00:08It was pounding out of his chest and I knew something was different about his heart.
00:15I work for Hartsley Village Animal Rescue.
00:18There was a kitten that was brought in, in a box, and that he had some heart issues.
00:24And the minute I saw Wallace, I just fell in love.
00:27He had such a unique looking, grumpy old man face.
00:32I got him an appointment with a veterinary cardiologist and he looked at me and he said he'll be lucky
00:38if he lives to be a year.
00:40And he was six months old at this time.
00:42So I was so heartbroken for him.
00:45And I thought, I'm going to give him the best last little bit of his life, however long or
00:50short that is.
00:51And I figured it would be maybe six months or so.
00:57So I tried to include all the experiences that a happy cat would want.
01:01I gave him his favorite treats.
01:04I wanted him to experience things that are outside.
01:08So I took him on stroller rides.
01:11He really loved that and he was so chill.
01:15He came to me at a really difficult time in my life.
01:19I was going through cancer treatment.
01:22I was going through radiation that month.
01:24So it definitely wasn't a time that I had planned on taking in a permanent resident.
01:29However, I actually needed him at that time.
01:33He gave me so much love.
01:35He was such a comfort to me.
01:37I'm going to have everything for you.
01:39You're going to love it.
01:40I would snuggle him and hold him and cuddle him.
01:44Sometimes he doesn't like it, but he gets it anyway.
01:46He taps me on my arm in the morning to wake up.
01:50He gave me a lot of love and comfort during the time that I needed it the most.
01:54I think the moment hit me recently, once he turned two, and I thought he's doubled his
02:06life expectancy.
02:09When the vet came over the last time and she listened to his heart, she said that she thinks
02:14maybe one of the areas that had a hole could be closing up and she credits that to all the
02:22love and attention.
02:23But now, he's over two years old and he doesn't look like he's going anywhere.
02:31It gets me a little choked up, actually, to think that he survived.
02:36When he was little, I thought I had a limited amount of time.
02:39I don't think that way as much anymore.
02:41I get that question a lot.
02:43Am I keeping Wallace?
02:45He's not going anywhere.
02:46He's mine.
02:47He's a large-hearted boy in more ways than one.
