Cyprus travel safety: UK Foreign Office issues latest advice amid Iran strikesThe Independent
Transcript
00:00Here at the High Commission of Cyprus in central London, it's a relatively normal day,
00:06although I imagine there's quite a lot of goings-on given the proximity of this British Commonwealth member to the Middle East.
00:17Earlier today, an RAF flight evacuated some British nationals from Israel, from Tel Aviv airport, to Lanarka in Cyprus.
00:28There have also been, judging from the number of contacts I've had from people, a lot of concerns about people who have trips booked to Cyprus.
00:39At the closest distance, the nearest resort, Protaras, is about 145 miles from Israel.
00:47Having said that, in the scale of Middle East conflict which I have been witnessing for quite some decades,
00:55I would not hesitate to travel to Cyprus tomorrow.
01:01The Foreign Office is warning of the possibility of heightened conflict as a result of the Israeli, Iranian and now US battles.
01:12But, the eastern Mediterranean, comprising Cyprus, as well as Turkey and Greece, are looking very stable to me.
01:22I've talked to people who are there, they report it's a perfectly normal time.
01:27If you did want to change or cancel your holiday, well, I'm afraid the big travel companies are telling me that normal terms and conditions apply,
01:37so you would not be able to do anything other than, well, lose some money on the transaction.
01:44If you are concerned though, some travel companies may allow you to postpone or to move your planned holiday,
01:53but that is going to be the exception rather than the norm.
