00:00that ramona has had no sleep and has completely uh been put through the ringer by multiple airports
00:07in the united states of america today so i don't know what we're gonna get i love this i don't know
00:12i love ramona in general but i like a sleep deprived where the heck am i ramona even more
00:18i've never heard you cuss on the radio but i'm thinking it's possible right now are you gonna
00:23do it i mean i cussed on the radio with you once you remember when i talked about staying up late
00:31if you want to shoot that oh that's right your girl that's right i had forgotten well if you ever want
00:39to do it again today's the day today you know what i'm about to do right now i'm about to take my shoes
00:44off in public i'm sitting in the denver i'm sitting in the denver airport and i just walked like a mile
00:52to like get to some gate where i could almost like get i was trying to go standby on this flight
00:59that was going back to burbank and i it was not even going to be an option but we got in a little
01:05early from oklahoma city thinking oh the airline gods have cut me a break and i just humped it all
01:11the way over here and like i'm watching as i'm talking to you that plane pull away from the gate
01:16without me because they closed the gate on me like five minutes before i got here it's very sad
01:22i mean i'm waiting here for another three hours to take off instead of getting home at seven today
01:26i'm getting home at 10. you know crack off those shoes and peel off the socks let the dogs out
01:32keep the socks on that feels like the only decent thing to do oh put your put your feet up get yourself
01:38my feet yeah my feet are on i'm gonna take a picture you can see it yeah send me a picture
01:43get yourself a cinnabon and relax no doubt it's gonna be fine but i get it we've all we've all been
01:51there and and literally you're up all night writing and were you writing about the thunder and their
01:57championship or tyrese halliburton and his and his achilles i was writing about the thunder and
02:04their championship i write this sort of like you know every year it's kind of this thing i do
02:09of like you know what whoever wins the title i collect for a big long 300 000 i was 300
02:173000 word story feels like 300 000 words um but it's sort of like you know the city thunder this
02:23is your life right like and and this is kind of how the how the championship was won and so i've
02:29been collecting for it for a while but then last night was such a bummer with tyrese getting hurt
02:34that like it took a minute for everyone to kind of digest that and feel like it was uh like i mean
02:41honestly even the fans there um were like sad like the whole first half i feel like nobody knew what
02:49to do like are they are we allowed to cheer or can we be happy it was very somber in that arena last
02:57night and then halftime came and everybody kind of reset and the the pacers like you could just see
03:02like their soul was sucked out of them like it was really sad but good for the thunder they they had a
03:08great year and a great series it's just it's going to be one of those what if games now for
03:13most of sports history especially if you're a pacers fan oh my gosh yeah heartbreaking i mean first time
03:20back in 25 years and so close and you felt like you know up until the injury that they had a real
03:25chance to do it but just your more broad takeaway from the series because okc 68 wins best point
03:33differential in nba history were you sensing that this would be one of the bigger collapses if they
03:40didn't get it done you know what i i don't even i wouldn't have called it a collapse like i think
03:46indiana was really good like i mean you know there was like a poll we put up on on their social media
03:51where it was like you know everybody was like who do you got right and like 70 percent of the people
03:56picked pacers after that game six and i the more i watched of the series the more i was like
04:01yeah i mean they have two really legitimate scoring threats in tyrese and pascal siakam and
04:07then i think their bench players were just better and more seasoned than the thunder you know and
04:12i mean a little tj mcconnell out there oh my god that guy was great and and you just kind of felt like
04:18you know um they just kind of felt like this team of destiny and then halliburton came out with his
04:23hair on fire he had like three threes he was amazing and uh he was uh i i felt like it was going to be
04:30their night you know like oklahoma city was like really tight felt like the last couple games the
04:36pressure had really started to affect them and all that you know the the youth and the really the
04:42pacers defense and the way the the way that the pacers were just playing with like how they were playing
04:48with house money for several rounds like nobody expected them to beat cleveland and then the nicks
04:53and then i mean they were you know and at some point you start to believe in them but they really
04:57didn't have any pressure on them and they played like it hey ramona uh off the top of the show and
05:04it is a bummer because uh oklahoma city wins a championship and and i think outside of of that
05:10area most people are talking about halliburton the next day but we we got into a conversation
05:16about all of these achilles injuries and the fact that players right you're bigger stronger faster you're
05:22taking better care of yourself but there are more injuries and for me these are overuse injuries and
05:27i've arrived at a point where i'm kind of bothered that they'll do load management during the year
05:32but they won't take time off in the off season and and so what what do we do about this all the way
05:38down to aau level what do we do about players who keep playing for 12 months and now we have this
05:44come june you know i don't i don't know if it's load management i think there's something you know
05:50i i kind of want to get into this too because this is this is terrible like this is terrible for
05:56basketball it's terrible for the game i mean i you know jason tatum's out all of next year and dame is
06:03out all of next year tyrese is out all of i mean this is that's brutal that's not just like i mean you
06:09and i were in la when kobe was out for a whole year i mean that was terrible brutal terrible you
06:15know like this is terrible for the game of basketball like if i'm in the eastern conference
06:18i'm like who am i picking whoever doesn't have a torn achilles i mean this is you know this is and i
06:24and i think like something my friend um you know he runs this company at the hyper ice it's like
06:30the the official recovery um uh tools of the nba and they have this new boot coming out it's like
06:37this nike so i don't know it looks like a it's kind of like so like a boot that looks like a
06:43cyber truck would look to a truck right it looks really funky and everything but he says that like
06:48they've been studying those kind of itch those kind of injuries and there's totally different
06:55ways that people need to be like warming up and strengthening their feet and their calves and
07:00their ankles and everything and hopefully that's going to help if you look it up i could find just look
07:05it up hyper ice boot it's something with nike too and i think all the guys are going to be using it
07:10next year it's like a new product that's coming out but i think you know that this is part of a
07:14larger thing where um i just think there's too many games like we all we've all been talking about it
07:20right it's not there's a reason why they load manage is because there's too many games i mean i you
07:24know and i and i know they need the home days for the revenue and i know everything's always been on
07:28an 82 game schedule but jj reddick had this we we were asking him about what does that mean like
07:33what you know back in you know his day or back in you know you and i both host with michael thompson
07:39in la we would always tell stories about how they you know how many games they'd play and it's like
07:43commercial and they'd play back-to-back for three in a row and all that stuff and and and i was like
07:48so how could how can they do it and not have all these horrible injuries and not have to sit out games
07:54whereas these guys who fly private have the top of the line trainers have the best everything in
08:02terms of performance how can they not do it right and i think the answer is really just um i think
08:10the answer is that the game is so different there there's it's so much more active now like guys are
08:15running so much they're putting so much torque and pressure on their body with sprinting all over the
08:21court you know i mean just look at steph curry look how he plays he's running the entire game
08:26he's cutting he's running is this you know and that's so different than the old traditional half
08:31court offense you know it used to be it used to be you know the the bigs would run down they'd post up
08:38maybe there'd be a guy or two running around the perimeter there'd be a guy who'd drive in it but
08:42there's there's no such thing as this motion offense that we all see now and i think that is
08:47contributing a lot to the wear and tear on these athletes that's leading to these kind of injuries
08:52that's a good point and just the nature of any game it's everything is explosive right
08:58offensive defense everything is a is a hard plant and it's a cut and it's just you know active and
09:05everything is so much more explosive and i can't help but think about what we've had ramona over the
09:11course of the last seven years seven different champs in seven years but here we have an okc team
09:17that's young and they're going to come out and try to defend next year do you think that they have
09:22a chance to be the next and i don't want to say dynasty because you have to do it more than
09:27just once but how much is this okc team going to be a viable threat not only next year but for years
09:33to come well if you want to call them a threat i will say yes if you want to say are they going to
09:39win multiple titles i'm going to say i don't know yet because i i'm i'm the girl who's like you could
09:44find clips of me being like the you know the denver nuggets are positioned to win for years to
09:48come right like i mean there's always like you know everybody who wins like we all feel like
09:53the boston celtics are positioned to win for years to come and then you know life happens right and
09:58and uh i think the way the modern nba is it is there's it is such a grueling regular season
10:06hard to get to the end healthy it's hard to take everything so seriously that's why
10:10that's why like you know our our heyday of covering the calves and the warriors that that's
10:16just i don't think we're going to see that again where you have these two rivals that emerge and
10:19play each other four years in a row that was that was really incredible that they pulled that off of
10:25those two teams did that right and um i think um as we look at this going forward i you know
10:31tyrese you know had them in a position where i would have said the pacers were i would i would like
10:37the pacers next year i mean they were really good this wasn't just a a fluky run they were a really
10:42good deep team and i think it's it's sort of instructive on how teams are going to have to
10:47be built now going forward like you're this era of two and three stars who are making max money
10:54i don't know if that can work anymore is the new salary cap rules like you've got to have
10:58young guys you've got to have people on cost-controlled contracts you got to develop
11:03your own players most of the you know the pacers are sort of this island of misfit toys right like
11:09they had all these guys that other teams gave up on but they were still really talented guys
11:13like aaron neesmith he's a first-round pick and you know i mean matthorin he was a lottery pick
11:19i mean they had siakam that's the guy who was traded you know from the from the rafters
11:23haliburton traded how often do you see a team makes the finals where like
11:27all these players on the team were traded that almost never happened when you saw that with
11:31the two leading stars in this in these finals and so i think you know now when i look at those you
11:37know those warriors the hallmark of those warriors was that they grew their young stars they all grew
11:44together there was consistency they had a vision and they executed that and then they just sort of
11:49recast the supporting characters every year or every few years um it's going to be hard to do that
11:55now like even look at for indiana miles turner's due for a big raise neesmith's due for a big raise
12:00mathurin's due for a big raise like i don't know if they can keep that team together like they're
12:04just going to have to keep finding these new guys and it's you know that's that's going to be the
12:08modern mba so teams like the warriors i think are actually decently positioned because draymond's on a
12:14decent deal you know jimmy butler and steph are the two top heavy guys but they do have their picks
12:19they do have young guys they do have developmental players that they're bringing along and so i think
12:25they're probably better off than an older team like the lakers or maybe the dallas mavericks or
12:32some of those other teams that we've seen um have success lately talking with ramona shelburne of
12:37espn you're listening to 95 7 the game kgmz fm and hd1 san francisco and odyssey sports station in the
12:43home of the golden state warriors and valkyries always live on the free odyssey i'm coming to you
12:48live from the laughing monk studios speaking of those warriors ramona what do you think they're going to do
12:52this offseason well i think we'll know a lot more when we see what happens with cominga um you know
12:58does he really have a market um outside of i know there's a couple of teams that are interested in
13:05him but those would be sign and trades they don't have the cap space to get it done and so do the
13:10warriors want to even participate in those sign and trades if they do what's the number um you know
13:15five three or four teams i've heard of that have some level of interest but what is that level of
13:20interest right and if and do the warriors want to keep him and if so what is the number is he
13:25is he gonna you know if they make him an offer that's that's less than max or maybe even less
13:31than what he was offered last year which i think is is far more likely um does he stop at that and then
13:38take a really long time to make a decision and then tie up their cap space and that presents other
13:44problems so i think um that's that's the biggest thing that you have to look for you know but i but
13:50i know that they're you know they're working on a few things i don't i don't expect anything massive
13:56like we've seen i mean jimmy butler was really that move right but um but the coming good question
14:01is going to hang over everything because it's it has the potential to get messy yeah i mean it could
14:06get messy and like you said it could drag out and if it drags out then the warriors kind of don't get
14:11to be players in the general marketplace anyway but outside of coming good is there anything that
14:18the warriors can do that can upgrade their roster or is it really just going to be a case of waiting
14:23for coming and then trying to fill in around that there's a couple of teams that i think you should
14:30watch closely right memphis is this interesting team right now um that doesn't bane trade it's got
14:38everybody kind of wondering what they're up to you know they they have john moran on that team they
14:43have jaron jackson jr um he's due for a giant extension i i believe that they're going to pay
14:50him but until they do it i'm going to watch that one really close um and and so is everyone else in
14:57the league right um but i and i also think that there's a lot of there's just a lot of guys out there
15:03that that they that could help them that they're gonna have to be creative on how to get but i think
15:09that i you know they obviously want to upgrade the interior defense right they want to add a really
15:14good center um for defensive and offensive reasons you know um like last year they were after nick
15:20lucevich right um in chicago there's you know he's he's not a great defensive center but he gives
15:25them the stretch threat so i you can i could see them revisiting something like that but i you know
15:31there's a lot of teams that are looking for a a decent center right the lakers are doing the
15:35same thing you know just saw dallas tied up daniel gafford so that's you know there's there's not
15:40there's it would seem like there's a lot of centers out there that are available but um there's a
15:46there's not that many really good ones and i and that's where i would i would look for the warriors
15:51uh ramona shelburne espn hey real quick what'd you think of the kd trade
15:56oh my gosh houston is scary now right i thought that was great for houston i mean i i don't i you
16:04know my guy john gambadoro in phoenix keeps saying bradley beale won't be back on that team like they're
16:10gonna buy him out they're gonna trade him we'll i mean we'll see i believe he's really dialed in
16:15there in phoenix um so to me that that really does affect how i view this trade with the rockets
16:23because if bradley beale's still on the team why do they need jaylen green i mean he's sort of
16:30redundant with booker anyway and now you have another perimeter player who's not a great defender
16:36and kind of needs the ball in his hand but not a true point guard i mean it's it's just another
16:43awkward fit so i don't know why they prioritize that i don't quite understand why they didn't get
16:49their picks back or like insist on jabari smith or even get an extra piece like cam whitmore like
16:54there was there was just extra things they could have gotten i like that they got dylan brooks that's
16:58good for them they didn't they need a defender but um i mean for houston they get off jaylen green's
17:04contract that's that's a win and and they get kb right whoa and they get to keep all their all their
17:15good young pieces and they got to keep their draft picks that they some of which are phoenix's draft
17:20picks like that was a hell of an upgrade for houston without having to give up much and that's
17:25i thought the whole thing was was really interesting to watch the leverage game right because
17:29no phoenix they messed up they they tried to trade katie without working with him at the deadline
17:34he nixed the idea of going back to golden state and now all of a sudden it's it's uh you know they
17:42they offended him and so you know that he he wasn't going to stay there so you lose the leverage
17:47of like just keeping him on the team right like you lose that leverage and he has this he has this
17:53ability to he has one year left and could sign into your extension so he doesn't like if you trade him
18:01to a place he doesn't want to go they're not going to give up that much for a guy that doesn't want to
18:05go there and i think there were a couple teams that were really thinking about it like do we just roll
18:09the dice and hope he stays you know um like toronto's thinking about it you know i i thought
18:15it was in shams reported that cleveland thought about it that's interesting um minnesota was the
18:21big one for me like he if he's not interested in minnesota is it you know how do they do they just
18:28take a swing anyway i mean they did that with mike conley and that worked out really well so i thought
18:33that those were the those were the really interesting what ifs to that trade because that would have
18:38really changed those teams um and then of course miami i mean i like i think that would have been
18:44a great fit in miami especially now with the eastern conference it's just decimated by injuries
18:48uh ramona thank you for the picture and uh just that a great picture it's a great shot yeah it looks
18:55like uh partly cloudy skies but a nice day in denver and the and the and the plane that was pulling
19:00away from the gate that was the one that they closed the door oh yeah that's the one that that was
19:05the one that got away huh not sad the one that got away yeah that is but but now you have some
19:10extra time to yourself and if you you know if you want to call in again at 5 45 you can we'll still
19:17be here we're here yeah i mean i i mean for me i'm my voice is a little scratchy my energy is a
19:24little low but i made sense for most for the most part right no you totally did yeah yeah you didn't
19:30i mean there was a few parts where i was like talking and i was like what was the question again
19:33i mean i you know there was a few spots yeah but it doesn't matter it doesn't matter yeah you can
19:38say whatever you say and it doesn't matter at a certain point what we have i was like i don't
19:43know what he first asked me but you know we're just going to keep going with this yeah no i i i
19:48thought uh yeah coherent is is is a word that could describe what just happened absolutely that is a
19:54that is not a high bar to clear and yet i am proud of it but you did it you did it anyway yeah
19:59all right okay take the load off and uh get home safe ramona i'm putting my shoes back on
20:05i'm afraid someone's gonna recognize me
20:06all right all right thanks ramona okay there she is ramona shelburne at espn
20:13in a classic she didn't have to but she did anyway
20:17she didn't have to but she didn't have to but she didn't have to but she didn't have to
20:20but she didn't have to but she didn't have to but she didn't have to but she didn't have to
20:22but she didn't have to but she didn't have to but she didn't have to but she didn't have to

20:25but she didn't have to but she didn't have to but she didn't have to but she didn't have to
20:26but she didn't have to but she didn't have to but she didn't have to
20:28but she didn't have to but she didn't have to but she didn't have to
20:29but she didn't have to but she didn't have to but she didn't have to
