00:00I always want to see what else we can do.
00:03This might look like a high-end restaurant dish, but its origins are surprising.
00:09The meat didn't come from an animal, it was grown in a factory.
00:13We can grow meat from any animal.
00:16First, cells from the animal are put in a giant tank like this,
00:20and then multiplied to form a paste, which is then turned into a mince or pate.
00:25What we do is we put the cells in a nutrient broth.
00:28So there's amino acids, sugars,
00:31and that is what is actually allowing the cells to grow
00:34in a way that's very similar to what you'd see in a brewery.
00:37Professor Dora Marinova from Curtin University says consumers will want to know
00:41what the health and environmental impacts of lab-grown meat are.
00:45We know that it requires much less land,
00:49but there are some questions asked around the use of energy
00:53because it's quite an energy-intensive process.
00:56Another question is the viability of the business model,
00:59according to Professor Paul Wood.
01:01I think the biggest issue is cost and scale.
01:04This is an expensive product to make.
01:06You need special equipment, you need expensive media.
01:10The food safety approval might seem like the biggest hurdle for the product in Australia,
01:15but the bigger question is will consumers want to buy it?
01:19Would you try lab-grown meat?
01:21Yes, I would.
01:22As long as there's controls in place to make sure that the lab-grown meat's safe, why not?
01:27Yeah, it's a bit weird.
01:28Like, meat's meat, why is it grown in the lab?
01:30Yeah, I think I'd want to know more before I attempt it.
01:33Lab-to-plate could be on the menu within months.
01:40about that one submitted a box they announced.
