The city of Phoenix will celebrate its growing Taiwanese community with a “Taiwanese Heritage Celebration” during an Arizona Diamondbacks Major League Baseball game this September. The event will feature a ceremonial first pitch from former Taiwanese baseball player and coach Ati Masaw and a performance by pop group Genblue. The choice of Phoenix reflects the city’s deepening connection with Taiwan as home to TSMC’s U.S. facilities and the site of a Softbank-proposed trillion-dollar tech complex.

00:00We're here in Taipei, where plans have just been announced for a Taiwanese heritage celebration
00:05to take place in the U.S. state of Arizona this September.
00:09It will be the second time the event has been held.
00:12The event will highlight Taiwan's culture during a Major League Baseball game featuring
00:16the Phoenix-based Arizona Diamondbacks.
00:19Organizers today revealed the event's special guests.
00:22They include former Taiwanese baseball player and coach Ati Massa, who will throw the game's
00:27opening pitch, and the Taiwanese pop group Gen Blue.
00:34The choice of Phoenix is no coincidence.
00:36That's the home of Taiwan chip giant TSMC's American facilities.
00:40And the Taiwan-Phoenix connection could be getting stronger, following a recent proposal by SoftBank
00:45CEO Masayoshi Sun to partner with TSMC on a $1 trillion industrial complex in the city.
00:53One of the organizers says the event is an opportunity for the Taiwanese community in
00:57Phoenix to come together.
00:58You know, it's really, really hard work for, you know, a company that size, for employees
01:03to really pick up their family to move and relocate from Taiwan to Arizona.
01:09They deserve an event like this to help them celebrate and kind of, they're a little bit
01:13homesick maybe, I have the feeling.
01:16Baseball is very popular in Taiwan.
01:18And this event highlights baseball's role not just as a bridge for communities, but also
01:23for economies.
