00:12:43and it didn't help at all.
00:12:46The door kept slamming
00:12:47and we still kept getting the noises from her room.
00:12:53There was just something weird about that house.
00:12:56It had a fairly strange feeling about it.
00:12:59I mean, I can't explain to you what it was exactly,
00:13:02but you'd go in there and just have this bad feeling like in your gut.
00:13:07I started having these nightmares
00:13:19and they were so distressing
00:13:23that sometimes I just wouldn't want to open my eyes.
00:13:28because I'd woken up, but I didn't want to open my eyes.
00:13:34But there was one particular one.
00:13:35It was quite vivid and recurring.
00:13:39Alice would come down the hall,
00:13:41still dripping from the dam,
00:13:44and just stand at the foot of our bed,
00:13:47just staring at us.
00:13:49It was quite terrifying.
00:13:52As I said, I didn't want to open my eyes.
00:13:54By early February, my nightmares were getting so bad
00:14:02that I began to go for walks at night,
00:14:05sometimes for hours at a time,
00:14:08just so that I didn't have to go to bed at night
00:14:11and close my eyes and go to sleep.
00:14:17Sometimes I would actually go into people's houses.
00:14:21I didn't feel like I was doing anything wrong.
00:14:23I guess I really just wanted to be
00:14:28inside someone else's life for a while.
00:14:41Georgie, do you remember how Russell was doing at the time?
00:14:44Yeah, Russell was...
00:14:46He was working a lot at that point.
00:14:49I think that might have helped him with his grief.
00:14:51I think it's really without any explanation.
00:14:55Russell and I met, actually,
00:14:57on the Gippsland catchment project in 98
00:14:59and worked together on that.
00:15:02So you guys have known each other for a few years?
00:15:04Yeah, good few years, yeah.
00:15:08Do you remember how this affected after Alice's death?
00:15:10What changed?
00:15:12It was work as normal, and...
00:15:14That was troubling, actually.
00:15:17I didn't really know what to say to him about that.
00:15:20How you got it?
00:15:21You never spoke about it?
00:15:23Not really.
00:15:24Everyone grieves in their own way,
00:15:26and it wasn't really my place to be telling him how to feel.
00:15:31But I certainly was concerned.
00:15:36I was really grateful that I had my work.
00:15:40And, I mean, I felt really guilty about that at the time.
00:15:44But, you know, I just wanted to get on with it.
00:15:47Then, um, in one night in late February,
00:15:55I came home from work,
00:15:56and I was sitting in the, uh, sitting in the kitchen.
00:15:59And I heard a noise coming from Ali's room.
00:16:03So I went into Ali's room, and, uh...
00:16:07I don't really know why,
00:16:08but I sort of found myself sitting down
00:16:11in the chair in front of the dresser,
00:16:13and, um, before I could kind of work out
00:16:16what I was doing there, Ali walked in.
00:16:19And she went over to her desk
00:16:21and started sharpening a pencil,
00:16:23and then she looked like she was checking, uh,
00:16:27uh, for a text message on her phone.
00:16:30And, um, you know, I was completely freaked out.
00:16:33Uh...
00:16:35She was completely oblivious to my presence.
00:16:40And then I don't know what happened.
00:16:41I must have, um...
00:16:43moved to bed, or, you know,
00:16:45squeaked my shoes or something,
00:16:46but she went completely rigid.
00:16:50And I knew then that she knew I was there.
00:16:55And she slowly turned around,
00:16:57and she looked me right in the eye,
00:17:00fully for, you know, what felt like forever.
00:17:04And then she just came at me
00:17:06and stood up and said,
00:17:09get out, get out!
00:17:09And I just, you know, cut up and went out as fast as I could.
00:17:15I could hear Russell crying.
00:17:17And he was here in the kitchen.
00:17:19Matthew and I both found him in here.
00:17:21And he was sobbing.
00:17:23He was absolutely inconsolable.
00:17:25Do you believe Russell, when he says he saw a ghost?
00:17:29Yeah, I do.
00:17:30I believe he saw what he saw.
00:17:33And he wouldn't...
00:17:36He's not the kind of man to make something up.
00:17:38So I believe he saw something.
00:17:42Whether it's a real ghost or not,
00:17:44I don't really know.
00:17:46But I'm sure he saw something.
00:18:06I remember trying to talk to members of the church
00:18:11about how to help June and how to help the Palmers.
00:18:15But there just didn't seem like there was anything we could do.
00:18:20I think part of the reason was because they weren't churchgoers.
00:18:24I didn't know how to offer them comfort.
00:18:27I don't even know what June believes in.
00:18:34I found myself mostly concerned about Matthew.
00:18:39I guess because those two were always so close.
00:18:42I was worried how he would cope.
00:18:52I remember he was spending a lot more time alone.
00:18:57Oh, we were all worried about him.
00:19:04Matthew came in with some unusual bruises on his body.
00:19:08They were unusual in terms of their distribution and depth.
00:19:13We obviously took a history trying to exclude trauma,
00:19:17but there was certainly no history of trauma
00:19:19that he was able to give us.
00:19:22We tested him for vasculitis
00:19:23and we also excluded any poisoning
00:19:25or toxins in his system.
00:19:28We were unable to turn up anything conclusive
00:19:30and several weeks after this,
00:19:34the bruises just resolved spontaneously
00:19:36and we were never able to really establish a cause for them.
00:19:41My name is Steve Wilkie.
00:19:45I'm Matthew's best friend.
00:19:47I'd usually stay at Matthew's house two or three times a week.
00:19:54We started a band together,
00:19:57so we normally play music at my house.
00:20:02Matthew seemed a bit quieter,
00:20:04but he was always pretty quiet,
00:20:06so I guess there wasn't really any warning bells going off or anything.
00:20:11Although I had heard about June going into people's houses
00:20:14and Matthew never really seemed to want to talk about any of that.
00:20:17I never asked him about any of it.
00:20:25I know that he was always interested in photography
00:20:27and he was, at this time,
00:20:31he was starting to pursue it with more passion.
00:20:34Matthew came to me,
00:20:40he was very keen to find out anything about photography,
00:20:43so I was more than willing to help out.
00:20:46You know, that's what I do,
00:20:47so I was picking my brains about just about anything to do with it.
00:20:51From equipment down to techniques,
00:20:53down to lighting, down, you know.
00:20:55He was a great asset,
00:20:56so I mean, eventually I employed him.
00:21:04Matthew, can you talk to me about the photographs
00:21:27of the backyard that you've been taking?
00:21:32Yeah, basically I've taken that same photo,
00:21:36with that composition,
00:21:37for I think every three months for the past four years.
00:21:40And it's just a photograph of the backyard,
00:21:43looking out, and you can see the hills in the distance.
00:21:46It's just like a little project
00:21:47that I set up for myself when we got here.
00:21:50And what was in the April 28th photograph that was different?
00:21:57Well, it's basically the same shot,
00:22:01but it would appear that Alice is standing against the fence.
00:22:08Do you remember what the reaction in the house was at the time?
00:22:20I wouldn't say the mood was good,
00:22:22but it was better than before.
00:22:25It was like it gave us sort of something to focus on, I think.
00:22:31All of us.
00:22:32How you doing?

00:22:36Well, the photographs were taken on the 3rd of April
00:22:39and they were developed on the 4th,
00:22:42and I looked at them, I think, on the 5th,
00:22:45and looked at the dams and the water levels,
00:22:49and I was quite happy,
00:22:50but it was only the following night
00:22:52that it was pointed out to me by my wife
00:22:53that there was something in the background in Norval Dam,
00:22:56this image came up.
00:22:57Well, when I first looked at the photograph,
00:23:14I didn't know what to make of it.
00:23:15The image was quite unsettling
00:23:18because it certainly looked like Alice.
00:23:21It was an incredibly discomforting image.
00:23:31And I became convinced that Alice was still alive.
00:23:34I didn't have any rational explanation
00:23:44for who was in those photos.
00:23:47But I did know something about Alice that June didn't.
00:23:52I'd seen Alice's body.
00:23:53I didn't think she was alive.
00:23:58I knew she wasn't.
00:24:01I became convinced that Russell had made a mistake.
00:24:05He himself said that it didn't look like anybody anymore.
00:24:12June was so convinced that I'd made a mistake
00:24:14that I actually started to have doubts myself.
00:24:15I started to think maybe I'd made my mind up
00:24:21that it was Alice's body before I'd looked
00:24:25and that the circumstances were so compelling for me
00:24:29that I decided that it was her.
00:24:35More than three months after the funeral
00:24:38of Ararat teenager Alice Palmer,
00:24:40her grieving parents formally requested
00:24:42her body be exhumed from the General Cemetery.
00:24:45There has been some contention from the Palmer family
00:24:48about the accuracy of the original body identification.
00:24:52June and Russell Palmer were adamant
00:24:53that DNA testing be carried out.
00:24:56They just couldn't be sure
00:24:57that the body they identified was indeed Alice.
00:25:00And today, almost...
00:25:01Alice's body was exhumed in the presence
00:25:03of the funeral director, Dr Slatter,
00:25:06and there was a representative
00:25:07from the coroner's office of suicide.
00:25:09And it was then transported to Ararat Base Hospital
00:25:12where they took their DNA samples.
00:25:14And she stayed there until the results came back.
00:25:21A few days later, we received a copy
00:25:24of the coroner's preliminary report.
00:25:28And Alice's identity was confirmed
00:25:31by the DNA sample match.
00:25:33It was only after they confirmed that it was Alice's body
00:25:40that I realised how much that I'd invested
00:25:43in the possibility of it not being her.
00:25:47You know, I can't tell you how much I wanted there
00:25:50to have been a terrible mistake,
00:25:53even if it had been mine.
00:25:54I really, really wanted there
00:25:58to have been somebody else's kid in that dam,
00:26:00a runaway, a murder victim,
00:26:03just anybody else's,
00:26:05just so long as it wasn't my kid,
00:26:06just so long as it wasn't Alice.
00:26:07Yes, it is.
00:26:28Alice was reburied two days later on the 7th of June.
00:26:55But the question remained,
00:27:00who or what was in those photos?
00:27:03Well, I continued to hear things,
00:27:27and, um...

00:27:29I was hearing noises, sort of,
00:27:32they didn't really relent.
00:27:33I kept hearing noises in the hallway.
00:27:35So I thought, well,
00:27:37I'll just set up a camera to see if,
00:27:39you know, I see anything,
00:27:41see something.
00:27:42The first night,
00:28:07I looked back and there was footage of a figure
00:28:13moving from the lounge room
00:28:18across the hallway to the front door.

00:35:11mind you,

00:35:13He was a pleasant sort of a bloke.
00:35:17He wasn't icky spooky at all.

00:35:22A few days later,
00:35:23maybe a week later,
00:35:25I suggested to the family
00:35:26that we hold a seance.
00:35:29June was really keen,
00:35:30but I remember Russell
00:35:31just flat out refused.

00:43:45I just used an old video of Alice.
00:43:49And I played that on the TV, I had the TV up on the bookcase and it was as simple as rotating
00:43:56the mirror so that the reflection of the TV came up in it and obviously the mirror is quite
00:44:03small so it cropped out the edges of the television and then, yeah, I just filmed that.
00:44:08Same with the kitchen and the bedroom, what you see basically is Alice on the television in the mirror.
00:44:14Like it wasn't about trying to trick people, I guess it was like something was better than nothing.
00:44:31Um, do you think that what you did ultimately made it worse for June?
00:44:39Um, I think that, yeah, yeah, I probably, I probably did make it harder for her, but that wasn't, that wasn't my intention.
00:44:53I'm not quite so sure about his reasons. I don't know that I totally, um, I don't want to say I, I, I don't totally believe what he said, but, um, I'm just not convinced that he really knows why he did it.
00:45:21When it all came out, people wanted to do stories and books and women's magazines, a whole lot, just went pear-shaped.
00:45:37Oh look, we just didn't know how to handle it. I mean, you know, we had to protect Maddie, we had to protect ourselves, we had to protect Ali's memory and we just didn't have any experience of, you know, dealing with it.
00:45:51with all this interest in something that was incredibly personal, that people wanted to make incredibly public.
00:45:58I mean, the Palmers weren't coping well at all at that point.
00:46:01The things were very bad, they were, they were doing it tough.
00:46:07This was like the end of hope, for all of us, but especially for June.
00:46:12She just really wasn't ready to let Ali go.
00:46:21She just needed to hang on to her a little bit longer.

00:46:30She's interesting girl. She seemed to not get on with June so well. I thought they actually were quite alike. It was interesting that the two of them might not get on so well.
00:46:48They, they, they always seemed very much alike and you could see that Alice took, took a lot after June, but also other things have had become clear as well after Alice's death, that perhaps a bit of a sense of the private arms that they both shared.

00:47:30Yeah, the sense of privacy, the sense of that there is their own private life that they will either choose to share or to not share, I guess.
00:47:40It's wonderful when your children come and that, that, that new expression that, that, that you have, but, um, as a, as a mother, you still always got doubts that, um, you're not doing enough or you're not doing the right thing.
