00:00In 1956, after years of insomnia, after years of anxiety, I embarked upon an odyssey.
00:18Dorian Paskowitz is a 58-year-old doctor who one day decided to give it all up and spend
00:23the rest of his life traveling with his family in a tiny camper from one wave to another.
00:27He wanted us to be unchained to a mortgage, a moment's notice, just get in and go.
00:34We'd wake up one morning and we'd be in Pensacola.
00:36Wake up another morning, we'd be in Purpose Christie, San Francisco, Baja, Florida, Venezuela,
00:40New Mexico, Alabama, El Paso.
00:42We just for the moment go wherever.
00:44Open the camper door, go out and do your thing, lunches at noon.
00:47We were not attached to the physical world at all.
00:51In some little town in Louisiana, we pulled over into the state park and he says,
00:55there it is, we're down to our last dime.
00:59And he was excited.
01:00For 10 years, I was either pregnant or breastfeeding without one day off.
01:05When you have nine children living in a 24-foot camper, you have these flare-ups.
01:12Eat healthy, live clean, serve clean.
01:14Dorian had us on such a tight diet.
01:16We couldn't have refined sugar, we couldn't have white bread.
01:19He fed us branches for breakfast.
01:21I wasn't some kind of radical.
01:24He used to play Chairman Mao's wake-up song to the nation every single morning.
01:28They go to a school I consider enormously demanding.
01:31I demand that they serve and be good at it.
01:34We would confront him on a daily basis.
01:35I want to go to high school.
01:37We did everything the hard way.
01:38If it was easy, then something was wrong.
01:41They're lazy.
01:42He's a dictator.
01:43He was fed up.
01:44I swore I'd never serve again, ever.
01:46Your parents said, you can go to school because it's safe, but don't go swimming with sharks
01:53because it's dangerous.
01:54Our parents said, you can go swimming with sharks, but you don't have to go to school because
01:58that's dangerous.
01:59Nobody would ever believe the experiences my brothers and I had together.
02:03I wouldn't change that for anything in the world.
02:05The good got way to the bad.
02:07It's almost like a dream.
02:09Everyone's trying to get that spiritual moment of perfection.
02:12We had it.
02:12We lived it.
02:13I intend to put my kids through what my dad put me through.
02:17I'm going to keep the dream alive.
02:20Wisdom you get from experience, and that is what my children had a lot of.
