Superintendent Andrew Spliet on wanding operation in Wagga that uncovered tomahawk, Stanley knives and other weapons as Riverina Police District cracks down on knife crime.

00:00We also conducted a wanding operation in the CBD of Wagga as well as Chumut.
00:06During that operation 60 people were engaged with. At the conclusion of that
00:12operation three other males were searched at separate times. One male was
00:17in possession of a tomahawk, a number of Stanley knives. He's been charged with
00:22possession possession of knives. Also the possession of housebreaking implements
00:30and goods in custody. We had another two males that were stopped and spoken to at
00:35two different licensed premises in Wagga. They were searched and located two
00:40knives on those individuals as well so they'll be before the court.
00:46People want to be able to feel safe when they go up the street and when
00:50they're you know going about their daily business. So yeah you could you could say
00:55at times that can be concerning but the good thing is that the police have been
01:00out there engaging with people and taking these prohibited weapons off the street.
01:04Yeah under those powers for the the wanding operations we speak to people
01:10it's not targeted we'll speak to all sorts of members of the community let them know
01:14what we're doing. The message around that is the safety side of things that you
01:18know we're out there looking for these type of items to basically let the
01:23community know that that we are actively trying to remove those type of items from
01:27from the street.
