00:00Well, we're to do, Bear Gain, Bacon, Bitch, Beautiful People, it's your girl Poet of Odyssey.
00:06And this time we are sitting with the ultimate icon, Mariah Carey, the songbird supreme,
00:12the blue prince, the queen of festive, and the reason most of us still think we can hit a high
00:17note in the car when no one's listening. From heartbreak anthems to champagne celebration,
00:22Mariah, you've been the soundtrack to our lives and now you're back, because you never really
00:27left with a new single, new era, and just the same legendary you. I want to get into all of this.
00:33Welcome. Thank you so much, Poet. How are you doing? Well, I told you I had to get dressed up when in
00:40the presence of royalty, you show up accordingly. And I'm dressed up for you too, because you see
00:46this gold ensemble? Oh, yes. We met him. Twins. Speaking of things that are awesome, let's talk
00:56your new single. Type Dangerous just dropped, and it's given glitter, heartbreak, and a little chaos
01:02in couture. What was the spark that bought us this record? Eric B. and Rakim and their incredible
01:10song, Eric B.'s President, has always been one of my favorite, favorite songs. And I happened to hear
01:15it in this restaurant in Asp of all the places. They were just playing songs, you know, from their
01:22list and whatever. And I was like, I haven't heard this song in so long. This is my favorite.
01:27And then we ended up in the studio, and guys were just playing around with it. You know, Andy and
01:35everybody. And so, yeah, it's really inspired by Eric B.'s President. And then, obviously, now the
01:44lyrics are different, and there's a melody on it and all that. But it's one of my favorite songs.
01:49I love it. It's the first single off your 16th studio album. And I love that this particular
01:56project is under your new deal with Gamma. What does creative freedom feel like now versus earlier
02:02in your journey? Well, it was always very difficult for me to find creative freedom earlier in my
02:10journey. Because, you know, when you start out and you're really young and you just, you know,
02:16you really have a point of view, but people don't want to give you that. Because, you know, it's like,
02:21who's this young girl to think she can do whatever she wants? And so, that was always a little bit,
02:28you know, I don't want to say annoying, but it was annoying. And now it's great to be able to have my
02:35own rate of freedom and also work with a great team of people that I, you know, love and appreciate.
02:43So, it's just a new day. And it's really nice to experience it like this.
02:48Now, one of the lyrics that stood out to me on this song is, he typed dangerous,
02:52but I still stay. So, I think everyone collectively felt that. Is that coming from experience,
02:59fantasy, or just vocal therapy for you?
03:02I think it's somewhere between fantasy and vocal therapy.
03:05Besides your partner being dangerous, what are the qualities make someone your type?
03:13Like, what does worth it look like now to you?
03:16Hmm. It's really tough because, you know, you want to say like, oh, these are the qualities,
03:23but then sometimes it's like, I got to reel it back in and go, wait, what do I really think
03:29the qualities are? So, it's interesting. And I'm hearing we're finally going to get a full visual.
03:36Can you give us a taste of what we're going to get? Is it going to be all couture? Is it going
03:43to be something type dangerous? Because your videos always speak and bring your lyrics to life
03:48in ways that people could only imagine.
03:50Well, we're definitely going to have a video that's speaking to you. It's Joseph Kahn is the
03:58director. And, you know, he's just one of my favorite people. One of my, definitely one of
04:04my favorite directors.
04:05Well, our favorite nibblings, rock and roll, get to join us in that viewing. I know they just had a
04:1114-year anniversary. Raising teenagers, what have they taught you most recently as you step into this
04:19new era, as you bring us new music while still momming and looking fabulous?
04:25Well, you know, they're my babies, no matter whether they're 14 or four. Like, you know, I love
04:31them so much. And, you know, yes, they do have their own things that I can look at and go, oh,
04:38that's cool how they just did that. Or, you know, they'll have a song that they really like and
04:44just sing it. You know, it's me looking at myself as a kid. It's different, but it's still the same.
04:52I love that. Now, let's talk you. Helping us cry, heal, and cut off the wrong person
04:58for possibly the fifth time. Have you ever been able to just sit and see your impact
05:04and how you are an intricate part of Black culture as we have this conversation in Black Music Month?
05:10Like, you've been a part of all parts of our lives?
05:14I mean, that makes me feel like I'm worth something. You know what I mean? That's one of
05:21the biggest things that I could think about and really just be about. You know, so I'm very
05:32thankful for the love and support and everything that's come my way because I had a difficult
05:40childhood. And, you know, I'm not going to cry on about it, but it was difficult. And feeling the
05:48love from so many people is, you know, is magical.
05:53I know our journeys are not the same. I grew up in foster care and had a little rough tumble with
05:58the first cards delved in my life. But I feel like you have been inspirational in helping a lot
06:03of us. Phoenix is rising that every time we see you, we're reminded that, yeah, some ebbs and flows
06:10and life will life. But look at how the roses will still grow from the concrete. I'm thinking of your
06:16catalog. Is there a deep cut or a fan favorite? Maybe not even a big single that still gets you in
06:22your feelings when you perform it live? You know, there's one song that I love,
06:29love, but I don't usually perform it live. But it is, I would say, of my catalog. It's definitely
06:36one of the top five favorites. And it's from the album Daydream. And it's called Underneath the Stars.
06:45Oh, I love that. I asked to sing a little bit of it. But since I don't want to hold you up for so long,
06:51you were just honored with the Ultimate Icon Award at the BET Awards. When you look back now
06:57at your career and your journey, what does it feel like to receive your flowers, especially from your
07:03community and the culture, and while you're here to see them, embrace them, and smell them?
07:10It was just such an incredible feeling to be there at BET that night and to be receiving
07:19my first BET Award. And then having it be the Ultimate Icon Award. That was, you know,
07:27it was amazing. And then Buster was introducing me. I walked on, I saw him, and I was just like,
07:33ah! It's just, see, it's like being in a whole room of friends and people that you love, you know?
07:41So that was, that was an amazing part for me.
07:44I love that. And since you are the Ultimate Icon, we got to talk, you've toured the world.
07:50You just recently played Showdown shows in China. You're headed to more international stages,
07:55Brazil, Australia, currently in the UK. How do these global crowds energize you differently?
08:01Like, you know we love you over here. But as you touch these international spaces,
08:05what does that feel like? Well, sometimes it's great. And sometimes I'm like, I want to go home.
08:14But, you know, it's going to be good. And it was, my daughter had wanted to come with me on this trip.
08:21And then, and then it was too late to her, to get her, you know, all the things she needs to travel.
08:25But I love when my kids go with me on these, you know, adventures, because they just make me happy.
08:34I love that. We love seeing them perform with you. And of course, we know, as we wrap this,
08:39that you are the queen of Christmas. But would we be surprised to learn that you're the queen of
08:44any other holiday?
08:46I'm the queen of most holidays because I love the holidays, all of them. I do what I can to make
08:52it festive for everybody. But let's just say, obviously, Christmas is my favorite.
08:57As it should be. And finally, let's have a little fun as we close this out. Everyone was talking
09:04about Mount Rushmore of R&B. We already know your face would be etched in it flawlessly and
09:10beautifully. Who else would join you on an R&B Mount Rushmore?
09:15Oh, my gosh, I can't say that. Do you have any ideas?
09:19Oh, wow. I instantly thought you, Whitney. And I guess depending on where you want to place it,
09:26I kind of think Jasmine Sullivan. Like, I got a mix, but I was curious.
09:34No, I know. Me too.
09:37Definitely Whitney up there. Definitely Jasmine Sullivan. There's so many amazing. Aretha,
09:43we have to put Aretha Franklin there. Come on.
09:45We have Mount Rushmore of 12, 20, 35.
09:48You're going to have to take the whole mountain.
09:53And then for those who are entering whatever their journey may be, maybe it's not music,
09:59maybe it's not radio and television. As you look at your career, what would be your advice to anyone
10:07stepping out on faith to do that thing that they're passionate about and they love?
10:11I would say you just really have to believe that you can do it. If you're passionate about it and
10:19you love it, then you have to put your whole self into it. You really have to be determined and be
10:27know for the fact that you are going to do this. When I was growing up and I knew I wanted to do this
10:35for a living, I would say like, it's not if I make it. My mother would tell me, she said, don't say if I
10:41make it, say when I make it. And I think that was good advice. We didn't always get along, but that was
10:47really good advice that she gave me.
10:49I'm taking it with me. I want to thank you again, Mariah, for the eras, the evolution,
10:55the emancipation that you've given many of us without you knowing, just over and over again.
11:00You continue to be the blueprint for power, creativity and sparkle in motion. And this new
11:06chapter is yours and we're grateful to be witnessing the magic with you. Congratulations. And thank you
11:12again. Thank you so much. I love that sparkle in motion. You are sparkle in motion. May the rest of
11:19your day be as beautiful as you are. And yours as well. Bye. Thank you.
