The Starship 36 spacecraft exploded around 11:00 p.m. (local time) on Wednesday, June 18, during a static fire test at the Massey test facility located in Starbase — a city built specifically for SpaceX operations in southern Texas.
The spacecraft was part of the preparations for the tenth flight of the Starship program, scheduled for later this month.
In the released footage, the vehicle can be seen on its launch pad when, moments after engine ignition, a large explosion occurs, engulfing the structure in flames. Emergency crews were quickly dispatched to the site.
In a statement, SpaceX confirmed that Starship 36 "experienced a serious anomaly" during the test. "A clear safety zone was maintained around the area throughout the operation, and all personnel are safe and accounted for," the company stated.
SpaceX also noted that its Starbase team is actively working with local authorities to secure the site and surrounding areas. "There is no risk to nearby communities, and we ask that people do not attempt to approach the area while safety operations are ongoing," the company added.
