00:07and we were each other's first love.

00:09Martha Plimpton offering rare comments about the late River Phoenix.

00:13The actress detailed their relationship on the Dinners on Me podcast posted June 16th,

00:19telling host Jesse Tyler Ferguson about their high-profile romance,

00:23as their stars were on the rise in 80s Hollywood.

00:26That relationship never really goes away.

00:29You can't ever let something like that go.

00:32It's just too important and too, like, altering.

00:35I mean, it's part of, it's made you who you are, you know, especially in those really formative years.

00:41I mean, it's a huge part of who I am.

00:43But I think fame was really hard on River.

00:47I think he really just didn't know what to do with all of that.

00:51The 54-year-old shared insights surrounding River's cut-short career

00:55as the Stand By Me star struggled amid navigating fame.

00:59It got harder for him, and he was not as equipped, I think,

01:08as maybe some other people might be to handle that stuff,

01:14because he was a very, at heart, very innocent and, like, driven by love human being.

01:24Martha and River remain close friends after their eventual split

01:28a few years before he died from a drug overdose at 23 years old.

01:33His affliction, his illness was incredibly difficult for him to manage on his own,

01:42and he never really got the help that I think he would have done amazingly well with

01:48if he had gotten that help.

01:49And unfortunately, it just, it got him before he had a chance to do that.

01:55But, um, but, yeah, I mean, I miss him every single day.
