Speaking to reporters, Sen. Josh Hawley (R-MO) responded to Sen. Richard Blumenthal (D-CT) blaming "MAGA rhetoric" for political violence.
Transcript
00:00Senator Blumenthal blamed what he calls MAGA rhetoric for intensifying the violence, political violence we're seeing in this country.
00:10What do you say to that kind of criticism?
00:12Well, listen, I'd just be real careful about the President of the United States has been shot at twice in the last year by egged on by the most unbelievable rhetoric, calling him a fascist, calling him a threat to democracy, calling for him to be taken out.
00:29So I think let's just – we could work together to turn down the temperature here.
00:33I mean, you look at what's happened just in the L.A. riots, and you look at this violence that's been going on, and you look at what my Democrat colleagues have been saying about that – I mean, calling the President a dictator.
00:41I mean, that's the stuff that got him shot.
00:43Now you've got nuts shooting other people.
00:46I mean, let's just – I think we can all – listen, you don't have to agree with your political opponents.
00:50You can criticize them strongly.
00:51Nobody is tougher in hearings than I am.
00:54That's all fine, but I think we need to get out of the business of calling our political opponents fascists and anarchists and, you know, terrible people.
01:02It's like, listen, let's just – we can disagree with each other without implying that the other person ought to have violence affected on them.
01:08So I think we've got to get to that point.
01:10Senator, do you feel safe?
01:11And also, do you think that members of Congress should have 24-7 security?
01:15Is that even possible?
01:16I don't know the answer to that.
01:17I defer to the experts.
01:19You know, we've got some great cops all around who work hard to keep members safe.
01:23I mean, listen, I feel – I don't pay attention to that stuff.
01:26I just don't.
01:27I just do my job.
01:28But, you know, I defer to Capitol Hill police and law enforcement, FBI, those guys.
01:32They know what they're doing.
01:33Senator, on the Biden cover-up hearing tomorrow, what do you want to learn that you've already learned already?
01:38Well, who is, like, who is running the autopilot?
01:40You know, I mean, really, like, who is running that thing?
01:43We need to know, and it wasn't the President, so are the pardons that he signed, for instance,
01:49or the clemencies for drug dealers, murderers – are those legitimate?
01:52I don't know.
01:53I mean, I – this is uncharted territory.
01:56We've never seen anything like this before.
01:57But we need to get some answers to who is actually running the country, because it sure
02:01as heck wasn't Joe Biden.
02:02All right.
02:03Thank you, guys.
