00:00Could Europe grab research talent from the US?
00:07As Trump cuts research funding, three-quarters of US-based researchers are considering leaving
00:13the country, according to a poll by Nature. In 2024, the US accounted for 36% of all
00:19highly-cited researchers, compared to 21% in China and 19% in the EU.
00:25While the EU retains a significant portion of its own talent, it also contributes substantially
00:31to the global pool of top researchers outside of the EU, particularly to the US.
00:367.7% of highly-cited researchers at Harvard, Princeton, Pennsylvania and Columbia earned
00:44their PhD in the EU. However, the salary gap between US and EU academics remains significant.

01:03no more than 75,000 euros.
01:06Initiatives such as Choose Europe, which includes a 500 million euros package aimed at attracting
01:12researchers to Europe, alongside efforts to reduce barriers for international students
01:17students and researchers could lead to important changes in the long run.
