00:00China, with her vast rivers and towering mountains, spans five time zones and thousands of miles.
00:19These spectacular peaks, diminishing waters.
00:30Sustaining countless forms of life.
00:39We will range far and wide, visiting some of the most fascinating corners of this enchanted land and admiring the charms of wild China.
01:00In the southeast of the Qingzhang Gowon, the world's highest spot, are a great number of most spectacular valleys on planet Earth.
01:14The prime examples among them are the Yarlang-Sangpo Grand Canyon and the Three Parallel Rivers area.
01:24Now, let us pay a visit to these two geological wonders and ecological havens.
01:32The Yarlang-Sangpo is the longest river on the Qingzhang Gowon.
01:53Warded by the Himalayans, this mighty river has to turn eastward and carve its way off the highland.
02:05After flowing for some 1,500 kilometers, it arrives at two peaks, towering an altitude of 7,000 meters.
02:20This area, marked by the two mountains, is where the Indian and Eurasian plates meet.
02:32The raging river squeezes between the two mountains before describing a sweeping curve.
02:41It follows the seam between the continental plates and then pours downward, cutting an immense canyon over 500 kilometers in length,
02:59before emptying into the Bay of Bengal.
03:06This is the Yarlang-Sangpo Grand Canyon, the world's deepest and largest canyon.
03:17Lying at one of the highest points on Earth, the canyon is among its most intense areas of crustal activity.
03:27Frequent collapses and landslides add to the difficulty of approaching the area.
03:34It wasn't until 1994 that Chinese scientists first measured the canyon's depth.
03:42At its deepest, it plunges 6,009 meters down, the height of a 2,000-story building, or twice the depth of the Grand Canyon in Colorado.
03:59This is the latest and most detailed high-definition aerial footage, revealing the depths of the canyon.
04:06The clashing of the Eurasian and Indian plates is visible here.
04:14Where the Yarlang-Sangpo River, constrained with a gap less than 30 meters across, crashes against the rock on its banks.
04:31The enormous kinetic force released by the river seems to shake the mountain on both sides.
04:45The marked difference in altitude presents a condensed panorama of all four seasons of the year.
04:57From freezing glaciers to snow-covered deserts, temperate coniferous forests to subtropical mixed forests and tropical monsoon forests.
05:11Nine natural zones are stacked on both sides of the canyon.
05:16The extreme landforms and varied climates have endowed the area with some of the richest biodiversity in the world.
05:32A rare primate hides deep in the canyon's forests.
05:39It was first identified in 2015 by Chinese scientists as a new branch of the primate order.
05:51This medium-sized primate has a white patch running from ear to ear and extending under the neck.
06:01Because of this, it's called the white-cheeked macaque.
06:10The white-cheeked macaque's population is hard to estimate.
06:16The forests are not the best place to feed and survive.
06:23The macaque has evolved so that it gets sustenance from just leaves and twigs.
06:30Some 500 kilometers to the southeast of the Yarlung-Sangpo Grand Canyon lies a miraculous land.
06:46In 1985, scientists examining satellite photographs located three major rivers here, running from north to south.
07:03In what is a rare geographical phenomenon, they flow in parallel for 170 kilometers without intersecting.
07:15With its unusual juxtaposition of valleys and canyons, the area is known as three parallel rivers.
07:28The easternmost of the three rivers, the Jinxia, forms the upper reaches of Chinese longest river, the Yangtze.
07:40Some 46 kilometers to the west, is the Langkang River.
07:45Flowing out of China, it links Myanmar, Laos, Thailand, Cambodia and Vietnam, and is Southeast Asia's largest international waterway.
08:03A further 19 kilometers to the west, is the major river of southwest China, the New Jiang.
08:15Deep in the dense forest on the west banks, lives a mysterious golden monkey breed.
08:30Clad in dark grayish fur, these elusive creatures have been classified in 2010 by Chinese scientists as a new golden monkey species, and dubbed the New Jiang golden monkey.
08:58The New Jiang golden monkey, one of five golden monkey species worldwide.
09:01The New Jiang golden monkey, one of five golden monkey species worldwide.
09:05has an estimated population of around 400.
09:12This dense forest.
09:13This dense forest is their only known habitat.
09:19The New Jiang golden monkey, one of five golden monkey species worldwide.
09:25has an estimated population of around 400.
09:31This dense forest is their only known habitat.
09:38The New Jiang golden monkey, has the ability to identify more than 90 edible plants and lichens.
09:50Within the three parallel rivers area, there are 118 peaks, rising to over 5,000 meters.
10:07These are the Maile snow mountains, rising to 6,740 meters.
10:17Here, the highest peak is shrouded in clouds and mist throughout the year.
10:26The massive plunging river gorges must have divided the highland into separate ecological zones, creating a new level of species diversification.
10:42Across the canyon, the golden monkey has branched out to produce a distinctive new variety.
10:53The New Jiang golden monkey, a close cousin of the New Jiang golden monkey.
11:03It lives at a higher altitude than any other member of its species.
11:11Yunan golden monkeys are distinguished by their voluptuous lips.
11:19In autumn, the search for food leads them to lower lying areas.
11:29Constant climbing and leaping are part of their daily life.
11:39However, the group's muscular leader has encountered a problem.
11:46The trees ahead have particularly slender branches, making it almost impossible to pass.
11:55The leader has to slow down.
12:01And demonstrate how to negotiate the tricky situation.
12:07Yunan golden monkeys nurse their young for 12 months.
12:24And give birth every two years.
12:28The more experienced mothers allow their offspring to go exploring.
12:35Only through practice can useful life skills be learnt.
12:41In the three parallel rivers area, huge altitude differences and varied ecology have allowed the rhododendron to split into over 200 varieties.
12:58As a result, this region is a center of the plant's origin and geographic distribution.
13:08In the flowering season, the various blossoms cover the valleys with a colorful carpet.
13:17This floral treasure trove has been drawing botanists for over a century.
13:23Many plant varieties that are popular in Europe can trace their ancestry back here.
13:29The tall room nobile, its pagoda-like bracts, conserve the heat in freezing temperatures and shield the delicate pistols from the elements.
13:49Because of the sudden gales, many plants keep a low profile.
13:56They stay close to the ground, standing shoulder to shoulder with one another.
14:06Amid the bare formations higher up, where the rock is constantly being weathered,
14:14The plants have become a cushion, adhering to the surface.
14:21This strange plant, with its hairy coat, has earned itself the nickname, Snow Rabbit.
14:35Bare rock formations are found both at higher altitudes and on the valley floor.
14:43Dry, hot river valleys are a major feature of the three parallel rivers area.
14:53In certain enclosed sections, the deep valleys intensify the phone wind effect.
15:02The resultant hot and arid microclimate strips the vegetation from the rocks.
15:10The only way for the inhabitants to survive is to adapt and reshape themselves.
15:17The animals walking along the cliff are dwarf blue sheep.
15:31So-called, because they are about half the size of other blue sheep.
15:42The emerald lizard is more flamboyant.
15:48These turquoise-colored creatures are very nimble.
15:55But their population is small.
15:59And they were only identified in 2016.
16:07The sheer cliffs deter most predators.
16:11However, the scarcity of food here, and resultant hunger, have caused the dwarf blue sheep's small size.
16:22Yet they have discovered an unlikely food source.
16:30This is the only plant that thrives in the river valley.
16:35The cactus.
16:39The prickly plant has a bitter, pungent taste.
16:43But the dwarf blue sheep endures the pain and gathers the sturdy plant for its food.
16:52Here, hardiness is essential for staying alive.
16:58But accepting a smaller stature isn't the only way to survive among the highland canyons.
17:09In the Doolong River Canyon, the Takans refer to bulk themselves up.
17:17The Mishmi Takan tips the scales at 400 kilos.
17:25These ferocious creatures are the strongest Takans in the world.
17:36Although this is a minor stream during the driest months of the year.
17:42The currents are still formidable.
17:47Even the strongest Takan has to tread carefully to negotiate the rushing waters.
17:54The three parallel rivers area is home to numerous legacies from the Quaternary period.
18:07These perfectly symmetrical U-shaped valleys were sculpted during that distant era.
18:15The glaciers have left some even more spectacular sights in these parts.
18:22The two bodies of water at a 3400 meter altitude are typical Moraine lakes.
18:32Further down is an odd-shaped swamp.
18:39Legend has it that the fields were fashioned by the residents of Heaven to provide earthly mortals with water all year round.
18:51Now let's return to the Yarlung-Sangpo Grand Canyon.
19:01At its southern end, ample rainfalls have created a rainforest spectacle right beside the Moraine Lake.
19:12This Moraine Lake is perched beside the Yarlung-Sangpo River.
19:19Surrounded by dense forest, it lies nearly 1000 meters above the river below.
19:37Here, every inch is crammed with life.
19:43The extreme density, humidity and heat can drive intruders to despair.
19:58This region has one of the highest densities of tree frogs in China.
20:08Dozens of new varieties have been identified here.
20:15At nightfall, the noise begins.
20:19The cross-barred tree frog is unique to the canyon.
20:38Its small frame measures just 5 to 6 centimeters.
20:42This is their most vital time of the year.
20:54With bated breath, the frogs are ready to spring into action.
21:02Their destination is the giant tree by the water side.
21:11A strong female is making the ascent, carrying its smaller male partner.
21:23A secret bridal chamber is hidden among the lush foliage of the parasitic orchids.
21:32More loving couples are converging on the area.
21:38Also, many single males have arrived, in the hope of finding a mate.
21:48The flexible, slender orchid leaves afford them an ideal bed.
21:59In a week's time, the spawns stuck to the leaves will hatch and tadpoles will drop into the water, starting a new life cycle.
22:16In May, the warm, humid air current from the Bay of Bengal dominates the climate.
22:26Frequent showers bring the average annual precipitation up to 2.3 meters.
22:35The humidity and heat can be stifling.
22:45It's early spring, but occasional snow falls sometimes halt springs' advance.
23:01After their wintery residence, the black-necked cranes are getting ready to depart.
23:08They spend only part of the year at the Yarlung-Zangpo Grand Canyon, but they never leave the highland.
23:25There are 15 species of crane worldwide.
23:30The black-necked crane was the last to be named.
23:35The wetland at the mouth of the canyon is one of their main winter habitats.
23:47After the snow, the temperature is creeping up.
23:58One by one, the cranes take off.
24:01Beating their wings in the balmy breeze, they bid farewell to the canyon and head for their summer breeding ground deeper into the highland.
24:15Behind the birds stands the towering Namjagbarwa Feng.
24:22Remarkably, it's still growing at an annual rate of 30 millimeters.
24:29Amid this cluster of canyons, with its juxtaposition of rivers and valleys, is found some of the most remarkable species divergence and biodiversity on the planet.
