Os Mutantes - Mutantes 1969 (Brazil, Psychedelic Rock, Tropicalia)
Between the 60s and 70s, in Brazil, between roots, rock, psychedelia and tropical, Os Mutantes emerged, a historic band.
Like the first, this album was created in close collaboration with the arranger and producer Rogerio Duprat, a remarkable work of his, a man whose talent added a new level of genius to this band.
Another Brazilian house party, dubbed in the right way, far from the supermarket collections. A force of nature. And they opened a path that they continue to open, where tropicalism should direct its steps. And where it should invoke Carlinhos to destroy it. Thirty years later, it continues to vibrate with all its power, imagination and contagious musical feeling, still ignored, buried by the power of bossa and samba. That is also music. It also moves you, invites you to the Copacabana party. The last thing I did was tell a Brazilian friend of mine and she laughed in my face with a “Can you hear that?” Yes, ma’am, that is a great honor.
The album presents a captivating mix of styles that is evident from the first track: a playful pastiche, part postmodern, part psychedelic, that remains extremely powerful and avant-garde decades later. These styles are practically impossible to define, but that is what makes the album so unique and essential.
Unlike their debut album, on this album the band dedicated themselves to writing much of the material recorded and to the transition from a 60s pop project to a 70s rock band, with psychedelic themes, evocative ballads, derivatives of tropical music and Brazilian pop music, resulting in a sound that was ahead of its time.
And here is a video
Ultimately, it maintains the energy and enthusiasm of the first album, but goes much further in terms of experimentation, and the melodies it composes are much better.
