The Tiny Desk is working from home for the foreseeable future. Introducing NPR Music's Tiny Desk (home) concerts, bringing you performances from across the country and the world. It's the same spirit — stripped-down sets, an intimate setting — just a different space.

Bobby Carter | October 26, 2021
Decked in a hoodie, cargo pants and coveted sneakers, a slimmed-down and clean-shaven Ed Sheeran stands surrounded by bookshelves and a host of world-class musicians. He’s flanked by music director to the stars, Adam Blackstone, who assembled the band and handled bass guitar duties. After opening this Tiny Desk (home) concert with his latest single, “Shivers,” Sheeran introduces himself and proceeds with more hits, new tunes, and a surprise throwback.

The English singer-songwriter may appear acclimated to a live band, but it’s a pretty rare occasion. For more than a decade, Sheeran’s become revered for ripping down stadiums, but usually (and remarkably) it’s just him, a guitar and loop pedals.

The material released so far from his upcoming album, = (out Oct. 29), leans heavily into the ’80s pop sphere and provides glimpses into Sheeran’s personal life during his time away. Here, he debuts “Overpass Graffiti,” an uptempo ode to the endurance of long love. “Visiting Hours” is a heartfelt dedication to his close friend and mentor, Australian record executive Michael Gudinski, who passed away in March.

Although most of the setlist honors =, Sheeran veers momentarily to take us to church with 2014’s “Make It Rain” from the TV show Sons of Anarchy. The choir only takes up a smidgen of physical real estate, but their voices manage to engulf the entire space, propelling the song to another stratosphere. He closes the performance with a quiet storm version of his summer single “Bad Habits.”

03:27All right, so hello, Tiny Desk. I'm Ed Sheeran.
03:36This is a wonderful band that are playing with me today.
03:38Adam Blackstone put this together.
03:40And we're going to be playing some songs that I've sung.
03:44This one is called Make It Rain.
03:49The sins of my father
04:03Are way down in my soul
04:10And the pain of my mother
04:19Will not let me go
04:22Well, I know there can come fire from the sky
04:29To refine a puristic king
04:35And even though I know this fire comes with pain
04:43Even so, and just the same
04:48Make it rain
04:51Make it rain down, Lord
04:56Make it rain
04:58Oh, make it rain
05:02Make it rain
05:05Make it rain now, Lord
05:09Make it rain
05:12Make it rain
05:15The sea needs the water
05:22Before it grows out of the ground
05:28But it just keeps on getting hotter
05:35And the hunger more profound
05:38And the hunger more profound
05:41Well, I know there can come tears from the eye
05:48But they may as well all be in vain
05:54And even though I know these tears come with pain
06:01Even so, and just the same
06:06Make it rain
06:07Make it rain
06:08Make it rain
06:10Make it rain, dear Lord
06:14Make it rain
06:18Make it rain
06:20Make it rain
06:22Make it rain
06:24Make it rain, dear Lord
06:27Make it rain
06:57Ooh
07:07Ooh
07:12Ooh
07:17Ooh
07:22The seas are full of water
07:33Stars by the shore
07:39Just like the riches of the ranger
07:45That never reach the port
07:51Oh, let the skies fill with thunderous applause
07:59And let lightning be the veins
08:04To fill the sky with all that they can draw
08:12When it's time to make a change
08:18Make it rain, make it rain now
08:26Make it rain, make it rain
08:32Make it rain, make it rain now
08:38Make it rain, make it rain
08:45Make it rain, make it rain now
08:51Make it rain
08:55Oh, make it rain
08:59Make it rain
09:01Make it rain
09:02Make it rain now
09:06Make it rain
09:12Oh, make it rain
09:14That was fun
09:27So this next one we are going to play is a new one
09:43Of the album called Equals
09:45Out October 29th
09:48Oh yeah
09:49Oh yeah
09:50It's called Overpass Graffiti
09:52And yeah, hope you like it
09:59This is a dark parade
10:09Another rough patch to rain
10:10Another rough patch to rain on
10:12To rain on
10:14To rain on
10:16I know your friends
10:19I know your friends
10:21I know your friends may say
10:22This is a course for celebration
10:23This is a course for celebration
10:24Hip, hip, hooray, love
10:26Go to grass and seep your tones
10:30So still the fire's barely fighting cold
10:32Alone
10:34There were times when I could feel your goals
10:41Just when I'm almost letting you go
10:45The cards were stacked against us both
10:50I will always love you for what it's worth
10:55You'll never fade like graffiti on the old past
11:01I know time may change the way you think of us
11:06But I remember the way we were
11:09You were the first cool start
11:10Love that will never leave
11:13Baby, you'll never be lost on me
11:18Ooh, ooh, ooh, ooh, ooh, ooh
11:26This is a goddamn shame
11:31I never wanted to break it
11:35Or leave us tainted
11:37Wish I could walk away
11:42But I just can't replace us
11:46Or even erase us
11:48The car was stuck, the engine stopped
11:53Both of us got put out in the snow
11:56Alone
11:59There were times where I'd forget the lows
12:04Think the highs were all that we'd ever known
12:07The cards were stacked against us both
12:12I will always love you for what it's worth
12:17You'll never fade like graffiti on the old price
12:23I know times may change the way you think of us
12:28But I remember the way we were
12:31You were the first cool start
12:32Love that will never leave
12:35Baby, you'll never be lost on me
12:39Ooh, ooh, ooh
12:46Baby, you'll never be lost on me
12:50Ooh, ooh, ooh
12:54Ooh, ooh, ooh
13:01I will always love you for what it's worth
13:06You'll never fade like you'd be the only old past
13:12I know times may change the way we think of ours
13:18But I remember the way we were
13:20You were the personal sky
13:21Love that will never leave
13:24Baby, you'll never be lost on me
13:29Baby, you'll never be lost on me
13:41Baby, you'll never be lost on me
13:42Baby, you'll never be lost on me
13:46Baby, you'll never be lost on me
13:50Baby, you'll never be lost on me
13:52Baby, you'll never be lost on me
13:54Baby, you'll never be lost on me
13:56Baby, you'll never be lost on me
13:58Baby, you'll never be lost on me
13:59So fun to play.
14:11This next song's called Visiting Hours,
14:13and it was inspired by losing a friend.
14:19It goes like this.
14:29I wish that heaven, that visiting I was,
14:45so I could just swing by and bring the news.
14:52She's getting old, and I wish that you'd met her.
14:57The things that you learned from me,
15:01I got them all from you.
15:06Can I just stay a while, and we'll put all the world to right?
15:12The little ones will grow, and I'll still drink your favorite wine.
15:18And soon they're going to close, but I'll see you another day.
15:24So much has changed.
15:27Since you've been away.
15:36I wish that heaven, that visiting I was,
15:42so I could just show up.
15:47And ask your advice.
15:50What would you do in my situation?
15:52I haven't a clue how I'd even raise them.
15:56What would you do?
15:59Cause you'd always do what's right.
16:03Could we just talk a while until my worries disappear?
16:08I'll tell you that I'm scared of turning out a failure.
16:14You'd say remember that the answers in the love that we created.
16:21So much has changed since you've been away.
16:29I wish that I did.
16:30I wish I had a good life.
16:34Hey.
16:34Oh, oh, ah
16:42Oh, oh
16:47Oh, oh, oh
16:59Oh, oh
16:59I wish they'd head
17:01Visiting hours
17:05And I would ask them
17:08If I could take you home
17:13But I know what they say
17:15That it's for the best
17:17So I will live life the way you taught me
17:22And make it on my own
17:25I will close the door
17:29And I will open up my heart
17:32Everyone I love will know exactly who you are
17:38Cause this is not goodbye
17:41It's just until we meet again
17:46So much has changed
17:50Since you've been away
17:59Well Tiny Desk
18:09It's been a pleasure
18:10Thank you so much for having me

18:32Every time you come around
18:38You know I can't say no
18:41Every time the sun goes down
18:46I let you take control
18:48I can feel the paradise
18:53Before my world ends
18:56And tonight had something wonderful
19:03My bad habits lead to late nights
19:08In and alone
19:09Conversations with a stranger
19:11I barely know
19:13Swear me this will be the last
19:15But it probably won't
19:17I got nothing left to lose
19:19Or use
19:20Or do
19:21My bad habits lead to white ice
19:23There in space
19:24And I know I lose control
19:26Of the things that I say
19:28I was looking for a way
19:30Yeah, now I can't escape
19:32Nothing happens after two
19:34It's true
19:35It's true
19:36My bad habits lead to you
19:38Every pure intention ends
19:47When the good times start
19:50Falling over everything
19:54To reach the first time spark
19:57Started on the neon lights
20:02And then it all comes
20:04And then it all comes
20:04I only know how to go to find
20:13My bad habits lead to late nights
20:16And then alone
20:17Conversations with a stranger
20:20I barely know
20:21Swimming this will be the last
20:24But it probably won't
20:25I got nothing left to lose
20:27Or use
20:28Or do
20:29My bad habits lead to white ice
20:32There in space
20:33And I know I lose control
20:35Of the things that I say
20:37I was looking for a way
20:39Yeah, now I can't escape
20:40Nothing happens after two
20:43It's true
20:44It's true
20:44My bad habits lead to you
20:46Woo-oo-oo-oo
20:50We took the long way around
20:58And burned till
21:03The far off
21:05Now
21:07My bad habits lead to late nights
21:10And then alone
21:11Conversations with a stranger
21:13I barely know, swearing this will be the last, but it probably won't
21:19I got nothing left to lose, or do, or do my bad habits lead to
21:24Sweet eyes stare into space, and I know I lose control of the things I say
21:30I was looking for a way out, now I can't escape
21:34Nothing happens after two, it's true, it's true my bad habits lead to you
21:43How bad habits lead to you
