00:00I would raise that same concern if one of our members was attacking him.
00:04All right, all right.
00:05Proceed with unanimous consent.
00:07Secondly, unanimous consent.
00:08I have an asking unanimous consent to submit a document entitled Trump wants to cut funding to sanctuary cities and towns, but they don't actually violate the federal law.
00:19Without objection to order, Chair now recognizes Ms. Lee from Pennsylvania.
00:23Yeah, thanks, Mr. Chair.
00:24It's always funny the lack of decorum that we get, and people drop, we do drop the Gentleman Act here oftentimes when attacking women who aren't able to defend themselves with equal time.
00:35But that's kind of the theme here, right?
00:36Attacking Americans are people who are not able to defend themselves, or at least who Republicans hope can't defend themselves.
00:42And that's what we're seeing essentially in Los Angeles.
00:45So I would say that this hearing is quite timely.
00:47What's happening with ICE and the military in Los Angeles is terrifying, and it's directly caused by Trump's policies.
00:54And it's cruelty.
00:55It was Trump's overzealous ICE agents who started this specific incident.
01:00And now they want us to get bogged down in arguing over the right types of protests, or the right types of way, or the right way to defend yourself, the mythical perfect type,
01:09so that we could ignore that Trump is the one who is escalating all of this.
01:14Trump is the one who ordered in thousands of National Guardsmen over the objection of Governor Newsom, something that hasn't been done since 1965.
01:22Trump is the one deploying Marines, not on an enemy abroad, but on the American people who are exercising their First Amendment right in this instance.
01:33The only opportunity that they have to defend themselves against lawless lawmakers who are imposing cruelty upon them.
01:42For a party of so-called law and order folks, they sure are stampeding over people's constitutional rights,
01:48and intentionally inciting more chaos, more fear, more anxiety, and increasing the likelihood that people will get hurt.
01:55In the end, what's happening in Los Angeles is just one of many incidents where Trump and his administration have not given a single damn about people's safety.
02:03For one, the ICE and DHS agents that are arresting people or raiding places often don't even have any kind of uniform or identifying badge.
02:12They're masked, and they're in unmarked cars.
02:15Ms. Perryman, just briefly, why is it so dangerous to have masked, plainclothes, ICE agents arresting people?
02:22I'll just thank you, Congresswoman, for your question.
02:25I'll go back to what I said before, that we know our Constitution recognizes and our country recognizes the importance of trust
02:32between local law enforcement, the federal government, and governors.
02:37And what we're seeing here is a breach of trust.
02:40It's an escalation, and it's dangerous for the American people.
02:45Trump said he was only going to go after undocumented criminals, but that's clearly not the case.
02:51Whether through incompetence or straight-up racial profiling, ICE and DHS agents are wrongfully arresting U.S. citizens.
02:58We've talked about it today, and catching these mistakes often happens too late after an American citizen has already been illegally thrown into another country,
03:08and Trump's administration is doing nothing to get them back.
03:11These agents are also going into previously protected spaces, as we've discussed, like churches and schools and hospitals.
03:17DHS agents tried to get into an elementary school by lying that they had the permission from the parents.
03:24That is a cartoonish level of evil.
03:26ICE also arrested a Massachusetts high school senior, Marcello Gomez da Silva, on his way to volleyball practice.
03:34Governor Walz, you're a former teacher and coach.
03:37Do you think these kinds of actions create instability for students, and do you worry about increasing anxiety of kids coming to school?
03:44Well, thank you, Congressman.
03:46I certainly do.
03:48Creating that safe environment where our kids can come and the expectation is to learn, they certainly do.
03:55Once again, there's no reason to use these enforcement actions at those locations when there are other tools.
04:01And I think, again, this false equivalency that we do not want violent criminals to be arrested, detained, and go through due process.
04:10We do.
04:11But hugely detrimental to the educational system.
04:14Hugely detrimental to a system that is dependent on trust and the goodwill of everyone in that school system.
04:23So, yeah, it is detrimental.
04:25Thank you, Governor Walz.
04:25These same kids getting arrested are often being separated from their families.
04:28They are scared.
04:29They're alone.
04:30An attorney is one of the few resources they had access to that is now being taken away as well.
04:34The Trump administration has canceled contracts with legal groups that represent those undocumented children in immigration court.
04:40This is going to force thousands of kids as young as two years old to represent themselves very quickly as we're running out of time.
04:45Ms. Perryman, how is a two-year-old supposed to represent themselves in court?
04:49A two-year-old can't represent itself in court, him or herself in court.
04:53And I'll just say that we are in court every single day seeking to try to ensure that people have access to legal representation,
05:01which, of course, this administration is really seeking to curtail.
05:04They are seeking to ignore due process rights.
05:07I was going to say, would you say that it is due process if a two-year-old is left to represent themselves?
05:11Absolutely.
05:12It's a flagrant violation of our Constitution.
05:14It's also something that shocks the conscience.
05:16We'll leave it there.
05:18I yell back.
05:19The witnesses have requested a 15-minute bathroom break.
05:23But before we do that, I'm going to go to Dr. Fox for five minutes of questions.
05:27After Dr. Fox, we'll take a 15-minute break for the witnesses, and then we'll start.
