Sussex World reporters Sam Morton and Derren Howard discuss Brighton's latest transfer dealings during the summer window

00:00Okay, thanks for joining us, Sam, for this special bite-sized edition transfer special

00:07for Sussex World. We wanted to just have a quick catch up with Brighton have been fairly

00:12busy throughout the summer. They've just added Diogo Coppola to their roster with 10 million

00:18signing from Hellas Verona. He joins on a five-year contract. Brighton also recently

00:24signed Charolampas Costulas from Olympiacos for 30 million. Stefanos Tissimas for 22 million.

00:33He'll join in the summer following his move from Nuremberg. Tom Watson joined from Sunderland

00:38for around 10 million. Korean winger Yudu Young also signed. He's the 18-year-old winger from

00:44the K League One outfit and he's probably joined for around about two and a half million is

00:49the reported fee for him. And Oliver Buscoli, he's the centre-back from PSV Eindhoven. He's

00:56signed on a free transfer, which was expected to be confirmed on July 1st. So they've been

01:02fairly busy, Sam. What do you make of it so far? Obviously, Coppola, that was confirmed

01:08today. So should we start with him? What do you think about signing?

01:11Yeah, no, I think it's a really intriguing signing for Brighton, obviously coming for

01:16around 10 million, as you say. 21 years old, six foot four in height and obviously comes

01:21in from Hellas Verona on a five-year deal. So I'll start with head coach Fabian Herzler's

01:26comments. He said, Diego is an exciting addition for the club. Although he's still young, he's

01:31tall, strong and mobile and he'll give us a real physical presence. He has made impressive

01:34progress in Syria and has deserved his call-up to the Italian national team. We look forward

01:39to helping him develop even more. And he emerged through Verona's academy and has since

01:44made over 80 appearances in the Italian top flight, scoring four goals. His domestic performance

01:49has earned him his first Italian cap in their World Cup qualifier against Norway in June.

01:53And he played again for the Azzeri three days later when they beat Moldova 2-0, which is

01:58a much better result and obviously a clean sheet as well. So he'll be really, really pleased

02:01with that. And he's currently representing ISTE's under-21s at the European Championships

02:06in Slovakia. And I think, yeah, it's a typical Brighton signing really, isn't it? Obviously,

02:10he's at that prime age of his career where he can come in and really improve and Bryson can help him

02:15get, obviously, up to his potential and hopefully he'll be a really good defender for them. And I think

02:21we've mentioned in a previous podcast that it's a real key area of the team that needs to be

02:24improved without the number of injuries they've had in defence. Obviously, some of the key defenders

02:30like Dunk and Webster and getting on into the later stages of their career. And I think it's

02:35really important. They start to bring in some fresh blood to learn from Dunk and Webster

02:40as well and really kind of make the most of the experience and the skills they have to

02:44then pass on to the new generation, which they've already been doing with players like

02:48Jan-Paul, Van Heek and Igor as well.

02:51Yeah. Yeah. No, on the face of it, it looks a really good signing, doesn't it? He's been

02:55in and around the Verona first team for quite some time. So hopefully he can get up to speed

03:00fairly quickly. Quick thoughts on Kostoulas, Sam. What do you make of

03:05him? Joined for £30 million from Olympiacos.

03:08Yeah. No, that's another interesting signing for Brighton. 18 years old, obviously, relatively

03:15inexperienced. Not too many senior appearances. In that sense, it's a bit of a gamble for Brighton.

03:22But he's been described by Herzler as an outstanding young player. He's delighted that he's coming

03:27to Brighton. He wants to play in the Premier League. And we're excited about what he can bring

03:30to the team. He'll give us different attacking options. And we're looking forward to helping

03:33him adapt to the new environment. But Kostoulas was part of the Olympiacos side that completed

03:38a league and cup double last season, scoring seven goals and getting two assists in 35

03:43appearances. And at 18 years old, that's a really good return. I can imagine that's only

03:48going to go and improve as obviously his career goes on. And hopefully he can settle down

03:53in the Premier League. But he's another player that will have to allow time. I don't think

03:57we can expect big things really early. But hopefully he can kind of adjust relatively

04:03quickly and learn from players like Danny Welbeck and some really experienced players

04:08in Brighton's team. And obviously, James Milder signing a new contract will be great as well

04:12to really provide some much needed experience in what is a very young team and to really help

04:18these young players improve and get better as they go.

04:22Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. The thing that struck me about obviously, he's got some great players

04:26to learn from, but he's 18 years old. But in the pictures that they showed at Brighton,

04:31he looks about 25, doesn't he? He looks like he looks like physically ready to go, doesn't

04:37he? In the Premier League.

04:39He really does.

04:39Hopefully he'll settle in pretty quickly. And he's going to be so it's going to be almost

04:44like a Greek, you know, the next generation of the Greece's top talent with Tissimas up

04:51front. So it'd be one to keep an eye on, won't it, Sam? See how those two get on together.

04:57Yeah, 100%. Yeah, obviously on Tissimas, he's 19 himself. So another teenage attacker that

05:03Brighton have agreed to get in. And Liverpool were also linked with him as well. So I think

05:08it looks like a really big coop for Brighton. He obviously signed on deadline day and lost

05:14January for £20.8 million. So that's another kind of hefty transfer fee, really, for obviously

05:22a relatively inexperienced player. But it's someone that's obviously been tipped to be

05:27a real quality attacker. And yeah, it's another typical Brighton signing, really.

05:33Yeah. And obviously, it's just something a bit different. And so what they've already

05:39got, and hopefully he can hit the ground running in the same way as Kostoulas. And I think it's

05:44two exciting signings for the future, 100%.

05:46Yeah, yeah, no one's to look out for. And Boss Cagli, he's probably looking, he's 27-28,

05:53isn't he? I think he'll add some experience to that backline. He had about six years with

05:58with PSV Eindhoven, I think. And he looks like a player who can just step in and just

06:04be ready to go in case of any, you know, like we said previously, Lewis Dunk and Adam

06:10Webster. They both suffered with injuries. And then we've got Tommy Watson as well, £10

06:16million. He showed his potential in the Championship playoff final there with that winner from the

06:21bench. Do you think he's going to be pushing for first team football? How do you see that

06:27one, Sam? Do you think he could potentially go out on loan? Or what do you think is Tommy

06:31Watson's role next season?

06:33Yeah, it's an intriguing one, isn't it? Because obviously it's one that Brighton have been linked

06:38with previously and obviously it looked like he was going to join earlier than he obviously

06:41actually did. He obviously got that playoff final winner for Sunderland with a real quality

06:47goal. And I feel like he's got the talent needed to go straight into that Brighton side,

06:52I think. He really does have what it takes. You can see in the game of that magnitude,

06:57it was such a composed finish, wasn't it? And that really kind of sold me a little bit.

07:02Yeah, he's got what it takes to do that in a game of that magnitude and to show such composure

07:08and everything like that. I think it's a real quality moment. And I'm looking forward to seeing

07:12what you can do in a Brighton shirt. And he really does add some much needed quality.

07:17And he's obviously versatile as well. And I think, yeah, he's a really important addition

07:20to the team. And I don't imagine he'll go out and own. I think he'll be straight into

07:24that first team set up.

07:26Yeah, yeah. No, it'll be interesting to see how that develops. I won't ask you for an

07:30in-depth analysis on Yundu Young, Sam. I don't think there's too much detail on him. But

07:36again, I think he's another one, isn't he, for the future? He's an 18-year-old winger.

07:40And we'll see what happens with his development as well. But in terms of outgoing, Sam, we

07:49haven't had any at the moment, but Gael Pedro looks the most likely, doesn't he, to leave

07:54at this stage?

07:55Yes, it does seem that's likely to happen. He obviously continues to be linked to the move

08:01away from the club. He's obviously widely expected to leave this transfer window with

08:05Newcastle reportedly pushing hard for a £60 million-plus deal. Premier League Champions

08:09Liverpool are also said to be keen. But Pedro apparently favours a move to London, which

08:14also places Arsenal in the frame. So three potential moves there for Pedro. But that's

08:20no real surprise. We've seen the quality he has for Brighton. He's one of the best, if

08:25not the best penalty takers around as well. So that's another string to his bow. And yeah,

08:32it'll be a really interesting one. I think we obviously had some quotes from Brazilian

08:36teammate Igor to South American media. He said he'll think he'll prioritise first what

08:41comes from London. From what I've seen, it's going to be difficult for him to stay at Brighton.

08:45People have to be honest. I think people at Brighton know this. But I'm very happy for

08:48him because he's been in England for three or four years and hasn't played for a giant team,

08:52a big team. It's his time for him to make the right decision and to be happy wherever he

08:56goes. So that was quite interesting comments from his Brighton teammate Igor.

09:00Yeah. Yeah. It's quite unusual to see comments like that, isn't it?

09:03It certainly is.

09:04When they're so honest. Yeah.

09:06Yeah. Very honest. And yeah. Yeah. I suppose refreshingly so as well. I suppose it's nice

09:10to hear what the players actually think. And yeah, I think, yeah, I think it would be very

09:15surprising if Pedro is to play another game for Brighton.

09:17Yeah. I think that's him on the way. Do you think any other players could be moving as

09:25well, Sam?

09:27Matoma's still 50-50, isn't it? I think there's not been too many rumours. I think obviously

09:32he was linked with Bayern Munich and that's gone a little bit quiet. We've not heard.

09:35It's been quite quiet with Matoma.

09:37Yeah.

09:37It has. Yeah. Yeah. It'll be interesting to see what happens in the coming weeks. But yeah,

09:42obviously Arsenal have been linked with him as well. There's another article recently saying

09:47that they're scouting Matoma and waiting for potentially the right time to make their move.

09:53So yeah, an interesting one. And I think we've mentioned before though, if Brighton can keep

09:57hold of Matoma, it would be huge, I think, just to keep that experience in the team as

10:01well because they're making some young signings, which is great for the future. But to keep

10:05hold of experienced players with the quality of Matoma would be huge. And I think obviously

10:11they managed to tie Lamptey down to a new contract, which I was quite surprised with

10:14because I think I'd said that he was going to be on the move this summer. So yeah, it's

10:19good to see him get tied down and hopefully he can stay clear of injuries. And yeah, if

10:23they can tie down Matoma as well, it would be fantastic.

10:26Yeah. Julio Nciso, do you think he'll be there next season?

10:29That's a good one. Yeah, good question. Yeah. I think it's another intriguing one. I haven't

10:32heard too many rumours about him, but again, he's such a great player and he can just score

10:38a goal out of nothing, score a scream or just create a goal out of nothing, as I say. And

10:45hopefully he can continue at Brighton. But I would completely understand if he's not guaranteed

10:49first team minutes, why he would potentially be looking for a move elsewhere because he's

10:54too good to be a bench player, I think.

10:56Yeah. His agent came out this week and said he needs to change surroundings and needs to

11:01be playing. I think there's Porto have been linked and Inter Milan have been linked this

11:07week as well. So yeah, one to keep an eye on there, Sam. And just finally, thanks for

11:12your time as always. But we just want to have a look at the Premier League fixtures. They

11:17should be released tomorrow. Will you be keeping a close eye on who Brighton's first sort of

11:23tranche of fixtures will be against?

11:25Yeah, it's always an exciting time of the year, isn't it? The fixtures are released and

11:30yeah, I think Brighton will be looking forward to that. Absolutely. And fans can start to

11:35plan ahead for the upcoming season. And obviously there will be some real intriguing games to

11:42look forward to this year. Absolutely. And yeah, I'm looking forward to those being announced.
