Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim has urged librarians across the region to go beyond their traditional roles and take on the challenge of nurturing a vibrant reading culture, especially among the younger generation.

Speaking at the 19th Congress of South-East Asian Librarians General Conference and Meeting (Consal XIX), Anwar said libraries must not only serve as book repositories or aesthetic spaces, but rather as dynamic centres of knowledge, culture and intellectual engagement.

00:00How is the neawthicent land?
00:08warahmatullahi wabarakatuh
00:09kalau kita bicara soal negara madani
00:12pertumbuhan negara
00:14memperkasa ekonomi dan negara
00:18ia mesti berasas kepada tungga ilmu
00:22tungga ilmu itu
00:25selain dari sekolah, universiti
00:27ialah perpustakaan
00:29And the story of Tamadun is a big area of knowledge, such as in Alexandria, in Baghdad, or in the West.
00:45The big part of the world, the thinking, the philosophy, the pujanga, all of them are in place in the world.
01:33Menggalakkan minat membaca
01:36Now Excellencies, Ladies and Gentlemen
01:38Clearly this Congress brings together some of the most
01:41The region's most vital custodian of knowledge
01:46Culture and community
01:48This lay the foundation for something often spoken but rarely defined
01:55A true Southeast Asian community
02:00The love for scholarship and learning
02:04I made reference to earlier about great civilizations
02:08Known of course for their economic strength
02:12Technological prowess
02:15Military power
02:17But underlying these factors is of course knowledge
02:25The capacity to not only combine these forces together into this great library
02:38But to be able to disseminate the information effectively
02:42Now to my mind this is a major task of librarians in this region
02:49It is a digression
02:51I don't mind
02:52I've been a teacher all my life
02:55So I think when a prime minister I behave like a teacher
02:58And some are getting bored
03:00So please bear with me
03:01Librarians therefore
03:04When you give a book
03:05There was a book festival recently
03:10And I said
03:10It's not necessarily just to give a book
03:14You should say open page 43
03:17Please read that para
03:20And make it so exciting
03:23That they will continue to read page 44
03:26And that's the challenge
03:29Because without that
03:34The consequences are profound
03:37You know for journalism
03:39For students
03:41For public knowledge
03:42For democracy itself
03:46Look at that rancorous debate
03:49Contentious at times
03:51Full of mischief and hatred
03:54With hardly any understanding
03:57Just playing
03:58Just playing
03:59Just playing
03:59Just playing to the gallery
03:59And this is of course
04:04Not wise
04:04Part least
04:08Populism
04:10But you breathe
04:12And encourage ignorance
04:14So that is why
04:16Libraries and librarians
04:18Have this big challenge
04:19I listened to Arwan
04:21About democratizing access
04:23Through digital
04:25Mobile libraries
04:28What have you
04:29Yes
04:30These are infrastructure
04:31And of course libraries
04:34Have to adapt
04:36With a steady resolve
04:39Digital
04:40AI
04:42Okay
04:43But
04:43Our duty is of course
04:46To encourage
04:49How do we then get people
04:50And students particularly
04:52The young
04:53To
04:54Have the interest
04:56To read
04:57So the good news is
04:58And for librarians
05:00Even in ASEAN
05:02With all the past
05:03Tribalists we have endured
05:05And experienced
05:06Libraries have endured
05:09And so librarians
05:11But
05:13You have a major task
05:17Not only to
05:19Disseminate
05:22That experience
05:23That knowledge
05:24Found in books
05:26But to get
05:29Libraries
05:30To be a vibrant centre
05:32And
05:39Broad
05:57Which
05:59Type
06:00Of
06:01pi
06:01No
06:02No
06:02No
06:04No
06:04It
06:05The
06:05The
06:06The
