The Dallas Cowboys will have to decide how much to pay DaRon Bland.
Transcript
00:00So the Dallas Cowboys are in for very complicated contract negotiations and a national media outlet
00:06showed us exactly why. And no, I am not talking about Micah Parsons.
00:15Hey, what's up? It's Mauricio Rodriguez here at ADZ Sports Dallas. We are talking contract
00:20negotiations between the Dallas Cowboys and their players because yes, everyone is talking about
00:26the Micah Parsons deal. And understandably so. When he is signed to a new contract,
00:32Micah will be the highest paid non-quarterback in NFL history. And since that should come very
00:39quickly with training camp in the horizon, everyone's talking about that. Everyone is
00:44concerned about that. But I'm looking a little bit ahead this time. And I am talking about another
00:49Cowboys player who is entering a contract year. And when the time comes, he might also be in a spot
00:56to cash in and become one of the highest paid players in his position. And I am talking about
01:02Cowboys cornerback, Deron Bland. If you're not expecting this one to be a contentious affair,
01:09consider where Pro Football Focus ranked him in a recent ranking for every cornerback in the league.
01:16And in fact, think to yourself, okay, Deron Bland is a top blank space cornerback in the NFL.
01:22Did he say 10? Did he say 15? Maybe you're an optimist and you were like, he's a top five dude
01:28for sure. Well, PFF ranked him 32nd in the entire league. I thought that was surprisingly low. Let me
01:35read you the exact reasoning behind that. Pro Football Focus wrote that his PFF advanced coverage
01:41grade wasn't great, even though his standard PFF coverage grade over the past two seasons
01:47ranks sixth in the NFL. Let's stop right there very quickly. We're talking about the guy who set the
01:52NFL record for most pick sixes in a single season. And PFF is saying, hey, the advanced coverage
01:58grade wasn't great. The coverage grade was top six in the entire NFL. The advanced one, not so great.
02:05I'm not going to lie to you. I don't know what to make of that, but I don't think that's what
02:09matters right now. What matters is there is a level of disagreement as to how good Bland is.
02:15The NFL world knows he's good. He's got something, which is why we know he's going to be an interesting
02:21contract candidate for next year, but he's not perceived as Sauce Gardner. He's not the Pat
02:28Sertain of the NFL. No one would really say the wrong blend if asked who is the best corner in the
02:35NFL. That alone tells you this is going to be a winding negotiation with number 26. Now there's
02:42already some drama to it because in OTAs, the wrong blend was actually used in the slot, which
02:48obviously puts him in a position where he doesn't want to be because outside cornerbacks make the most
02:55money in the NFL. And those guys that are inside, you're talking about guys playing at significant
03:00discounts at a cornerback. So we can guarantee that the wrong blend wants to be playing on the outside
03:06in a contract year to boost his value as much as he can. And if the Cowboys want to force him to play
03:12inside, I wonder if that could become an issue between player and coaching staff, as well as
03:18with the front office. For now, everyone is focused on Parsons. I get it. Everyone is focused on the
03:23actual 2025 season, but I think that's what makes this whole thing even more interesting. How Bland plays
03:30in 2025 could be a difference between a top cornerback contract in the entire league and maybe a deal that
03:37ranks around the top 10 area. So if you want to talk about motivation, Durham Bland is going to be fired
03:43up for the season.
