Sporting legends Hugh Porter and Anita Lonsbrough are celebrating their diamond wedding anniversary.
Transcript
00:00Here at the Express and Star we've covered plenty of diamond wedding anniversary. We've spoken to
00:03people who've been married for 60 years and more, heard about their lives and obviously heard how
00:08they've met. It's not often though you get to speak to a couple who met on the way to the Olympics
00:13but this is Hugh Porter and Anita Lonsborough. 60 years married and just tell us a bit about
00:21the last 60 years. You obviously met on the way to Tokyo. Yep we did. The plane journey was a very
00:26very long journey. You used to put down about every seven hours for refuelling and I think it was the
00:32last leg between Hong Kong and Tokyo that Anita and I struck up a conversation. Yes. That's right
00:39isn't it? Yes. Which ended up with me spending a lot of money by us having breakfast together. Yes on the
00:44plane. What did you say I was the last of the big spenders. But the relationship blossomed in Tokyo
00:54and nine months later in Huddersfield you were married. In terms of from what I'm led to believe
00:59quite a big crowd. Yes I would like to add though before we didn't have a particularly good Olympics
01:05with our sports but we didn't actually see each other while we were competing because I was in the
01:11main village and Hughie was in the cycling village which was some 25 miles away. So we didn't really
01:18see each other until our sports had finished and the cyclists moved into the village. I didn't really
01:25give it as best I could either in the Olympics if I'll rephrase that. I was ill at the Olympics. I had a
01:32serious chest bronchial infection which is not very good for competing for a medal. So whether I'd have
01:38got a medal of any colour if I'd have been better I don't know but it didn't worry because I met somebody
01:42that I married. Yeah and I had a bad swim. I won't go into why but several reasons and
01:49hopefully I could have won a medal but I didn't and but that's all behind us and we met and
01:57enjoyed each other's company and 60 years later we're still together. We're very lucky as well
02:03because we both had our sporting careers. I think I've told you this before James. We've had three
02:08careers. We're on career three now. Career one was when we competed. Career two was when we were both
02:14in the media. Fortunately I went on to be a TV commentator and he used to write for the
02:18Telegraph and do the expertise with radio didn't you? Yes. And now we've hung up the mic and all the
02:23rest of it but now we try to put something back and we work in career three by raising money for
02:27charity which we love don't we? Yes. And I think that's another thing that we get a lot of pleasure
02:31out of. Yes. And 60 years later there have been good times, there have been bad times.
02:36What's been the secrets to your long marriage? I'll let you answer that. Being the best of
02:42friends, enjoying each other's company. Always spending money on you? Well we did say earlier
02:54that you were the last of the big spenders so somebody has to spend the money. But 60 years
02:59it's been entirely worth it. Absolutely. I'm a very lucky man. Yes. We've had a good life really.
03:06Yeah. We've met a lot of interesting people, been to some super places. Done a lot of interesting
03:13things. Yes. Done a lot of travelling with our work and without. And I hope there's going to be a lot,
03:19even despite us getting a little older, crotchety, I'm hoping there's going to be a lot more good years ahead.
03:36Thank you so much.
