Grenfell bereaved and survivors shouted for justice in what is likely to be the final anniversary in the shadow of the tower as it stands, ahead of work to begin its demolition.
Transcript
00:00Hundreds walked in silence through West London on Saturday evening before hearing the names
00:08of the 72 who died in the fire and speeches by campaigners as Grenfell Tower, which is
00:16due to be demolished, overlooked them. This anniversary was notable for being what we
00:23expect will be the last under the shadow of Grenfell Tower. It is now due to be knocked down
00:31with work beginning at the earliest in September. At the close of the speeches people filed in
00:38through the gates which are rarely opened and paid their respects at the base of the tower.
00:45The final Grenfell Tower inquiry report, which was published in September, concluded victims,
00:55bereaved and survivors were badly failed through incompetence, dishonesty and greed. The inquiry
01:04chairman, Sir Martin Moore Bick, said the tower block was covered in combustible products because
01:12of the quote unquote systematic dishonesty of firms who made and sold the cladding and insulation.
01:21News of the government's demolition decision earlier this year was met with criticism from some bereaved
01:30and survivors of the 2017 fire who expressed their upset and shock, saying they felt they had not had
01:38their views considered before the decision was taken.
