Online Safety Act to be enforced soon, says Azalina

Malaysia will soon enforce the Online Safety Act 2024 following its full passage through Parliament and Royal Assent.  Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department (Law and Institutional Reform) Datuk Seri Azalina Othman Said said on Monday (June 16) that the law will empower authorities to better regulate digital platforms and strengthen protections—especially for children—from online threats and abuse. 00:13There will be a joint council because it's an online hub for the implementation of such laws.

00:19So it's been gazetted for the minister to sign the enforcement date.

00:24How soon can we expect?

00:25I think upon him signing, then it will take effect so that they're able to immediately take down and have the, according to the law, the expectation on the platform providers to have certain duty of care.

00:40So it will start.

00:42But then there will be the definition of the council on the definition of the online hubs.

00:49There is a committee under the act that says the online hubs definition is checked by the law minister.

00:58So that will be part, that is already in the act.

01:00So once he signed, I spoke to him this morning.

01:04He will sign once it's on him.

01:06Then we're able to start the implementation because it's already been gazetted.

01:14The king has signed the lower house and the upper house, so the king has really watered water, right?

01:23So then we will start being implemented.

01:26We hope so the soon as possible.
