00:01Dave Stewart who was the winning
00:02pitcher in game one working eight
00:04innings the Red Sox had base
00:05runners on in five of those innings
00:07and a guy who wants the ball kind
00:09of a you know a throwback every
00:11fourth day three days rest is all
00:13Stewart needs.
00:14Yeah he's had a couple of starts
00:15on three days rest one time he
00:17went eleven innings and beat
00:18Seattle and went into the ninth
00:20inning of the other one so he
00:21loves as most pitchers years ago
00:23did he loves working on the fourth
00:25day.
00:26Dave Stewart's a throwback for
00:27another reason you look at your
00:28pitchers like Gibson and
00:30Marischal and some of the greats
00:33they they were vulnerable early in
00:35the ballgame and once they got
00:36rolling through the middle part
00:37Giants the man who is right now in
00:39the road two down and Wade Boggs
00:41the batter five for twelve has
00:45been the most productive hitter
00:46for the Red Sox in this series if
00:48you want to call getting three
00:49runs in three games productive
00:51he takes a fastball for a strike
00:53he has a homer against Stewart and
00:55a double in the series.
00:58It's just outside one and one
01:00Stewart with a twenty two and
01:01eleven year.
01:05And in his personal matchup with
01:06Clemens seven and one lifetime
01:08fouled off the mask of Terry
01:09Steinbach and the count is one
01:10and two.
01:11And if he were to win today's
01:12game he would have five
01:13victories in league
01:15championship series play and
01:16that would be a record.
01:18And if he were to win today's
01:19game he would have five
01:21victories in league
01:22championship series play and
01:23that would be a record.
01:24He was four and own postseason
01:26and four starts.
01:31Check swing but a ground ball in
01:32the right field.
01:33One of a half swing and Wade
01:34Boggs has his sixth hit of the
01:35series a two out base hit.
01:39Well this is a great example of
01:40a pitch down and in down and
01:41in from a right hand pitcher to
01:43a left hand hitter is the easiest
01:45pitch to get the barrel of the
01:46bat on.
01:47Look how Boggs doesn't take a
01:48hard swing but it's so easy to
01:49drop the barrel on that pitch.
01:51That's why you pitch guys high
01:52and tight low and away.
01:53You don't pitch him down and in.
01:54He just kind of golfs that into
01:55right.
01:56And concerning the A's who are
01:57leading three nothing as we
01:58look at Roger Clemens getting
01:59set it's been seventy one
02:00years.
02:01Since the team won a postseason
02:02series without hitting a home
02:03run.
02:11They and they won.
02:12He's on board with his fifth hit
02:13of the series.
02:14Here's Dave Henderson who
02:15returned to action.
02:16Remember he had the knee surgery
02:17and came back in August.
02:18And he's like a high and tight
02:19low and away.
02:20He just kind of golfs that
02:21into right.
02:22And concerning the A's who are
02:23leading three nothing as we look
02:24at Roger Clemens getting set
02:25it's been seventy one years since
02:26the team won a postseason series
02:27without hitting a home run.
02:28He's got a good turn to action.
02:29Remember he had the knee surgery
02:30and came back in August.
02:34Round ball hit to the right side.
02:35Jody Reed over Rivera for one.
02:37The throw the first and the
02:38double play turned by the Red Sox.
02:42And there are two down.
02:43Three two pitch.
02:46Here's Dwight Evans.
02:51He has one of the Red Sox extra
02:52base.
02:53In the air to right center field.
02:56And it's caught by Willie Randolph.
03:00Fine play by Randolph.
03:02The veteran is doing it in the
03:03field as well as at bat.
03:04And there's two away.
03:05And the A's continue to make all
03:06the plays in this series.
03:10Third ball is in for strike three.
03:11First strike out of the game for
03:12Stewart.
03:13One two three inning.
03:14And in the middle of the second
03:15inning no score.
03:17No score is 30 times at bat
03:18against Roger Clemens career
03:19wise.
03:20And you see how many times he has
03:21struck out.
03:22Those that saw game one know the
03:23reason.
03:24Clemens thought it was but the
03:25Roger Clemens don't blame him
03:26for ducking.
03:27Round ball hit to the hole and throw
03:28to third base the tag is made but
03:29the run is going to score as
03:30Steinbach is retired.
03:31Connie Lansford comes in on
03:32McGuire's.
03:33Fielder's choice ground ball and
03:34it's one to nothing eight.
03:35First time.
03:36A score first in this series.
03:37Right.
03:38And the final score is.
03:39And the final score is 30 times
03:40at bat against Roger Clemens
03:41career wise and you see how many
03:42times he has struck out.
03:43Those that saw game one know the
03:44reason.
03:45Clemens thought it was but the
03:46Roger Clemens don't blame him
03:47for ducking.
03:48Ground ball hit to the hole a
03:49throw to third base the tag is
03:51made but the one is going to
03:52score as Steinbach is
03:54retired.
03:55The A's score first in this
03:57series.
03:58Mark McGuire gets a ball down to
03:59put the bat on it.
04:00Rivera with a heads up play here.
04:02Evidently the contact and run
04:03immediately play was on for the
04:05A's because Steinbach second.
04:07And here is Mike Gallego who is
04:09three for seven in the series.
04:14A's with runners on first and
04:16second that's McGuire at second
04:17Randolph at first.
04:20And Terry Cooney arguing with
04:24Tony Pena and Joe Morgan gets
04:26into the fray now.
04:27And.
04:31You don't often see a manager get
04:32thrown in a playoff or a series.
04:34Weaver has.
04:35Earl Weaver in the past.
04:39I thought that possibly it was a
04:41bop call and Cooney came from
04:42behind home plate.
04:43I mean Morgan is livid and I'm
04:45wondering whether he's ejected
04:47Clemens.
04:48First of all the scouting report
04:50on the umpires.
04:51And this is a rotation system.
04:53You don't get the six top rated
04:55umpires but Terry Cooney is one
04:57if you ask managers and players
04:58has a very short fuse tends to
05:01get upset a little easily.
05:02And this is an example of it.
05:07Well could you believe it.
05:08I mean you say.
05:10They just threw.
05:12They just threw something out
05:13towards.
05:14They called Tazio.
05:17Well Clemens rule.
05:18Be careful.
05:20Clemens is coming after Cooney
05:21because I think he just
05:22realized Cooney has ejected him.
05:25Obviously Clemens was shouting
05:27some things down at Cooney
05:28about the questionable balls
05:30and strikes.
05:31I got to tell you even though
05:32you're not allowed to do that
05:33in a game like this you don't
05:34throw out a pitcher like this.
05:35You know.
05:37Umpires used to be like your
05:38grandfather.
05:39They walk away.
05:40They let you have a say.
05:42And let you get it out of your
05:43system.
05:44But now they're like the spoiled
05:45little kid down on the corner
05:46of the block.
05:47They get cocky and arrogant.
05:48And this is an example of it.
05:50A Red Sox coach and player got
05:52tangled up in the dugout now.
06:00Question is to Terry Cooney
06:01throw out Roger Clemens.
06:02I can't imagine.
06:05It wasn't Roger.
06:06If it was somebody else.
06:07Clemens wouldn't be the guy
06:08trying to get out of him.
06:09It's absolutely absurd to throw
06:12a guy out in a situation like
06:14this a game of this magnitude.
06:18That could be the only thing
06:19that has the Red Sox acting like
06:21that throwing things from the
06:22dugout.
06:23And Morgan and Clemens trying to
06:25go after the umpire.
06:27Now I saw Clemens go to his mouth.
06:30And I'm wondering whether.
06:32Maybe the initial call was that
06:34Cooney said Clemens went.
06:36To his mouth or walked or
06:37something in regard to that.
06:41Doubt they would have this much.
06:43Of an argument over something
06:44that might.
06:45Tony LaRosa just looks on as the
06:48Red Sox have exploded.
06:53They have gone out of control.
06:55Roger Clemens.
06:56Morgan.
06:57And the dugout.
06:58John Hirschbeck the umpire in
06:59their picture along with.
07:00Tony Pena trying to calm Roger
07:01down.
07:02With the strike and balls on the
07:03entire game.
07:04And then he had a couple of
07:05comments for the umpire.
07:06And all of a sudden he was just
07:07heave out of the game.
07:08Would become.
07:09The man on the center stage and
07:10not the player.
07:11Not the pitcher.
07:12In a situation like this.
07:13And Roger Clemens.
07:14Whether you're an ace fan or a
07:15Red Sox fan or a Red Sox fan.
07:16You're not the player.
07:17He's not the player.
07:18He's not the player.
07:19He's not the player.
07:20He's not the player.
07:21He's not the player.
07:22He's not the player.
07:23He's not the player.
07:24In a situation like this.
07:25And Roger Clemens.
07:26Whether you're an ace fan or a
07:27Red Sox fan.
07:28I think the ace feel bad.
07:33Bolton faced one batter in the
07:34first game of the series.
07:41Fly ball center field deep
07:42going way back and over the head.
07:44A center fielder.
07:45Burks.
07:46Ball bounds around.
07:47McGuire scores.
07:49Here comes Randolph.
07:50And in its second with a two
07:51run double.
07:52The two run double.
07:53Is Mike Gallego.
07:54And it is now a three to nothing lead.
07:59One Anderson.
08:00Single.
08:03Was out on a double play in the
08:04first inning.
08:05So it's three to nothing in favor
08:06of the A's.
08:07They've jumped.
08:08On top of Clemens and now Tom
08:09Bolton.
08:11Both of those runs are charged
08:12to Roger Clemens.
08:14Holds up on the curve.
08:15They appeal to Vic Voltaggio and
08:16it's a ball.
08:17One and one.
08:18A lot of.
08:22Pressure unexpected pressure on
08:24Bolton who was ten and five
08:25with the Red Sox.
08:26In 16 starts.
08:28And we see Roger Clemens.
08:30Behind manager Joe Morgan.
08:32Wishes he had that towel over
08:33his mouth when he was on the
08:34mound.
08:35And now Terry Cooney.
08:40Explaining something new.
08:42Ricky Henderson.
08:45And Renee Latchman the third base
08:46coach comes.
08:48What's going on anyway.
08:49Richie Garcia.
08:52Who is down on third base may
08:53have to get involved here and
08:54restore order.
08:56He's the umpire in this group
08:57that can take charge.
09:00Things back in order.
09:01One ball one strike is the count.
09:11And a fastball is away two and
09:13one.
09:14So now you got Bolton staring in
09:15once a game.
09:17Gets a little bit out of control
09:18early for a home plate umpire.
09:21You make for a very long
09:22afternoon.
09:25Joe Morgan is going to come out
09:26to the mound walking faster
09:27than usual.
09:28And this is a little ploy.
09:29He's going to wait till Terry
09:30Cooney gets to the mound.
09:31And I think you may see Joe
09:32Morgan explode.
09:37And every Red Sox infielder
09:38will join the conference at the
09:40mound.
09:42Box is walking in now.
09:43Cooney doesn't want to go out
09:44there.
09:45He's waiting.
09:46He's going to wait till he gets
09:47in.
09:49Joe might plant a few tomatoes
09:51out there while he's waiting.
09:52Well here comes Cooney.
09:54This ought to be interesting.
10:00He took an outside turn on Cooney
10:02and Morgan goes back into the
10:03dugout.
10:07Roger Clemens who started with
10:08three days rest.
10:09A lot of.
10:11Words about whether that was the
10:12smart move or not.
10:13And he gets thrown out.
10:16For arguing with Terry Cooney in
10:17the second inning.
10:18There's Mike Gallego who knocked
10:19in two runs with a double.
10:21Fouled at the plate by
10:22Henderson.
10:23And the count is two balls and
10:24two strikes.
10:26Three runs are in here in the
10:28second inning and the A's who
10:29need one win to wrap up.
10:31The American League pennant are
10:32in front three to nothing.
10:56the A's.
10:57And.
10:58Rounded foul.
11:06Go against the left hander.
11:07The A's have exactly what they
11:08like.
11:09They have.
11:10Eight right handed batters and
11:11only Harold Bain swinging from
11:12the left side.
11:14The key right now for the A's
11:15and the Red Sox is to get your
11:16focus and your concentration
11:17back on the game.
11:19See really clapping his hands
11:20trying to get the A's in it
11:21because of what's happened.
11:23Everything has gotten so
11:24quiet.
11:25To lose.
11:27Your train of thought.
11:32Strikes him out on a curveball
11:33and that'll do it.
11:34Between innings Rich Garcia the
11:35third base umpire conferring with
11:37American League president Dr.
11:39Bobby Brown.
11:40You can almost see Richie
11:41gesturing with his hands and
11:43Dr. Brown's obviously
11:44interested in why did Clemens get
11:46ejected.
11:47Inning.
11:48Inning number three.
11:49Ball one.
11:55He's he's definitely been sigh
11:57steady.
12:01Always a sigh.
12:02And a pop up.
12:03Going out as Diego and short
12:05left field makes the catch in a
12:07one two three inning.
12:08Three ring circus in that second
12:09inning over at the Red Sox
12:10dugout.
12:11They had thrown those Gatorade
12:12baskets out.
12:13Now Dick Baradino the coach
12:14pulling Marty Barrett into the
12:16dugout.
12:17Barrett also was ejected from the
12:19game along.
12:20We go to the last of the third
12:21Canseco has to be looking at a
12:25possibility to break out of it.
12:27Sox last season brought him up.
12:30He was Owen Ford and then sent
12:31back to Triple-A.
12:34In there for a called strike three
12:37and Canseco goes down.
12:39And there are two out.
12:44Baines fouled out to Wade Boggs
12:46his first time up.
12:52And he went around strike three.
12:54So Bolton has struck out.
12:56Three of the five batters he's
12:58faced.
12:59And we have completed three in
13:00Zinocle.
13:05I think common sense you said at
13:07first this was not good.
13:09You're making them look bad.
13:10You can do it in a subtle way.
13:13Boggs grounds it up the middle
13:14and he's on with a base hit with
13:16one out in the fourth inning.
13:18Jody Reed had fly to Canseco
13:20in right field to start the
13:21fourth.
13:23Rolling tonight.
13:24Advanced on an error that was
13:26thrown out.
13:27Ocean.
13:29Here's a fastball.
13:31Drilled in the center field.
13:32For a base hit Steinbach.
13:34Now with five hits in the series.
13:37Lansford leads with six.
13:39And Terry is two for two.
13:41Now Willie Randolph.
13:43Was the last batter that Roger
13:45Clemens faced.
13:48He's coming up with.
13:50Runners at first and second.
13:52Great just got up to begin to
13:53toss.
13:54I would not think that.
13:56Morgan.
13:57Is going to make a move here.
13:58And of course once he returns
13:59to the dugout he's got to allow
14:00Bolton to face.
14:02Randolph.
14:03I think more than anything just
14:04buying a little extra time and
14:05quite honestly like a lot of us
14:07and a lot of fans here today
14:10you're burning up a lot of
14:11frustration a lot of energy
14:13because of what happened by that
14:15man's decision Terry Cooney and
14:16Joe has paraded back and forth a
14:18couple of times.
14:19Now let's see Morgan is going to
14:21avoid Cooney.
14:23Rich Garcia enters the picture.
14:25The A's lead at three to nothing.
14:31And this game has a long.
14:33You mentioned the A's tried to
14:34get Harold Baines earlier.
14:35They also tried to get.
14:37Willie Randolph a little earlier.
14:40Before he signed with the
14:41Dodgers.
14:42Sandy Alderson.
14:44He's been in there.
14:46Round ball.
14:47Box will step on third for one
14:49and the Red Sox turn their
14:51second double play of the
14:52ball game.
14:53And after.
14:54Four complete.
14:55It's three to nothing Oakland.
14:56Third.
14:57Herman Marquez.
14:58Who bought Tuckett.
14:59In fact many thought that he
15:00would be here playing for the
15:01Red Sox in September.
15:02He's not.
15:03But I think he'll be there next
15:04year.
15:05Yeah.
15:08Fastball line to left field.
15:09Ricky Henderson going back.
15:11Takes the catch.
15:13He made a fine running play
15:14going the other way yesterday.
15:16No runs.
15:17No hits.
15:18One left a fine.
15:20Defensive inning for the A's.
15:21And it's three to nothing in
15:22the middle of the fifth.
15:23In the middle of the fifth.
15:25Peace.
15:26Rockies will.
15:28All four and Henderson's aboard
15:30with one out.
15:31Here in the fifth inning.
15:32It's a.
15:33It's an argument baseball fans
15:34love to get involved in but I
15:35would say.
15:37The best lead off man in
15:38baseball history Ricky
15:39Henderson when you take into
15:40account all the things he can
15:41do.
15:43Joe Morgan's coming out to the
15:44mound and Jeff Gray already
15:45running in from the bullpen.
15:48And Bolton on short notice.
15:51Has done a fine job.
15:52The A's lead at three to
15:53nothing.
15:55But we're looking at Jeff Gray
15:57the third pitcher of the game
15:58for the Boston Red Sox.
16:00And we'll return to I on these
16:01clear bright days.
16:03Here's Canseco.
16:04He does have two hits in the
16:05series but none today.
16:06He's over.
16:10There goes Ricky.
16:11The pitch is taken for a ball
16:12to throw the second and in
16:13with a stolen bases.
16:14Henderson.
16:22We're going to get another
16:23argument and fielder would win.
16:33Swing and a miss.
16:35Strike three.
16:37Here's what is who sing like
16:39Darth Gray.
16:48Fly ball down the left field
16:49line Mike Gallego they all
16:51gives way to Ricky Henderson
16:52who makes the catch for the
16:54second out.
16:56I think the one opportunity the
16:57Red Sox had as far as pitching
16:59matchups was yesterday's game
17:00when Mike Moore who came in
17:02with a little shaky confidence
17:04perhaps in a losing record
17:05going against Boddicker one of
17:06the Red Sox best.
17:07And Boddicker has walked and
17:09come back to Oakland Jose
17:10Canseco has left the game.
17:11He's got tendonitis and a
17:12badly bruised right in between
17:14his index finger and his second
17:15finger on his right hand.
17:17Can't grip the bat.
17:18Can't throw the ball.
17:19He's not going to return today.
17:20Says he can use some time off.
17:21Told me he will.
17:22Jeff Gray.
17:24He's 0 for 2.
17:25Same with Canseco.
17:28Line drive to the opposite field
17:30and it'll drop in front of
17:31Greenwell who was playing deep
17:32for Baines in the opposite
17:33field.
17:37And that is hit number six for
17:38the A's.
17:40What great plate coverage.
17:41Watch Harold Baines go out and
17:42extend the bat and take a pitch.
17:43That's pretty well on the
17:44inside outside corner.
17:47And you mentioned Greenwell
17:48playing a little deep
17:49respecting Baines power.
17:52And as a result of that depth
17:53that's balls a base hit.
17:58Time is called by the first base
18:00umpire Vic Voltaggio.
18:04And Baines is going to go out and
18:05we're going to have a pinch
18:06runner.
18:08Willie McGee.
18:10Going to run for Baines.
18:14Is that impressive or what.
18:15You take out Harold Baines and
18:16you you pinch run with a former
18:18most valuable player in the
18:19National League batting
18:20champion who could also steal a
18:21base.
18:23And you lose your starting
18:24shortstop and you wind up by
18:25having to play Willie Randolph
18:26in the infield got a run batted
18:27in in the second inning and
18:28then walked.
18:50Rounded to box at third.
18:53And the inning is over and the A's
18:54strand McGee a third and after
18:56six complete it's three to
18:57nothing athletics.
18:59Jose Alvarez the new pitcher
19:00down at the beginning.
19:01The A's have had a couple of
19:02big innings in this series.
19:04They've had a couple of big
19:05innings in their pitching staff.
19:07Better than any staff in
19:08baseball at not allowing big
19:10innings.
19:12Broken bat to third base.
19:14Lansford side arms and a one
19:15two three inning.
19:17Seven in a row set down by Dave
19:19Stewart and we go to the bottom
19:21of the seventh inning.
19:22That broom could come in handy
19:24in a little bringing Longoria
19:26in for a strike.
19:27Did he go around.
19:37He did strike three and Henderson
19:39strikes out for the second time.
19:40He can't believe it.
19:42But the inning is over.
19:44Bolton came in and gave up that
19:47two run double.
19:49And the A's have not done.
19:52Broken bat grounder glove by
19:53Lansford by the third and there's
19:55one away.
19:59Eight in a row set down by Dave
20:01Stewart as is his custom getting
20:02stronger as the game moves
20:03along once again from that
20:05position a chance to get a quick
20:07jump on the ball with a lateral
20:08movement and the rest of it.
20:11Pretty routine for Kearney
20:12Lansford.
20:19So florist pitcher for Joe
20:21Morgan today.
20:23Kind of ironic that we've talked
20:25about that.
20:29Forb and everyone was in
20:30condition.
20:32And Henderson strikes out one
20:33goal.
20:34I think that's probably what Tony
20:35La Russa should get credit for
20:37Bob all is that he gets this
20:38ball club so prepared from
20:40spring training day one on.
20:43And that once they take the
20:44field that you know they just
20:45kind of react and do what they
20:46normally do.
20:47He takes care of all the
20:48preparation and the drilling
20:49and probably does it better
20:51than any manager in baseball
20:52and has a great coaching
20:53staff.
21:00He played it.
21:03And he walks up.
21:07The A's send up a pinch hitter
21:09for Ron Hassie.
21:13Joe Morgan.
21:15Coming out to the mound.
21:17Jeff Reardon has been warming
21:18up in the bullpen.
21:23Knocked out seven hits in this
21:24series.
21:27Here goes the runner pitch
21:28taken for a ball the throw to
21:29the second.
21:30And safe is Blankenship for the
21:31stolen base.
21:40Swing and a miss strike three.
21:42And the inning is over.
21:43And now we go to the ninth
21:44inning.
21:45Andy Peralta the new pitch.
22:01Her ball line fair down the left
22:03field line and into the corner
22:04chasing it is Ricky Henderson.
22:07And going into second with a
22:08double is Ellis Burks.
22:10And the first extra base hit for
22:11the Red Sox in the game.
22:18Off a fastball line drive in a
22:19hundred and four pitches.
22:21Stewart had thrown seventy five
22:22pitches through the first six
22:23innings.
22:25Game of the series.
22:33Gave up a run in four hits and
22:34that down the door for the A's.
22:35And there's a base hit down the
22:37right field line.
22:39Rounding third is Burks
22:40retrieving it as Jennings.
22:41Burks will score.
22:43And on at first with a base hit.
22:45It's a three to one ball game.
22:48And that may be all for Dave
22:49Stewart.
22:52I would think so with Honeycutt
22:53ready in the bullpen for the
22:54A's.
22:56Reed gets only his second hit of
22:57the series and an RBI.
22:58And here comes La Russa.
23:00He has pitched marvelously.
23:01LCS and has faced one batter each
23:17time both Mike Greenwell and he's
23:19retired them both times.
23:21Greenwell two left handed hitters
23:22box two for three.
23:25What is a step behind third.
23:28Round ball up the middle.
23:29Greenwell playing perfectly.
23:30Steps on the bag for one.
23:31He'll throw the first in time for
23:33the double play and there are
23:34two gone.
23:38A big double play for Honeycutt.
23:53He has not gotten a base hit in
23:55the LCS.
23:56He is 0 for 13 and a one hopper
24:03fielded by Gallego the throw to
24:05first and the ball game is over.
24:23Thousands of soccer players.
24:24He has to the most in the
24:26where we are going to win.
24:27That's why we were going
24:28to be a tough one.
24:29This is going to be too.
24:30But, you know for the
24:31only two.
24:32That's what's on the property.
24:33Now, you can get a guy.
24:34You got to stress that Aye.
24:35You got to sit?
24:36You got to sit?
24:37You got to sit?
24:38You got to sit?
24:39You got to sit?
24:40You got to sit?
24:41You got to sit?
24:42On the bench.
24:43You got to sit?
24:44You got to sit?
24:45You got to sit?
24:46Dave Stewart wins it.
