'Message of solidarity and friendship': Emmanuel Macron visits Greenland

On his maiden visit to the Danish autonomous territory, the French president met with both Denmark's and Greenland's heads of government.

00:06His first visit to the island is seen as a show of European solidarity with the Strategic Arctic Territory
00:12as it faces a threat from U.S. President Donald Trump to take it over.
00:16The mineral-rich island is a self-governing part of the Kingdom of Denmark
00:20and has the right to declare its independence.
00:23The French president said it was important to show solidarity
00:26with the sovereignty and territorial integrity of the island.
00:31And I'm very happy to be here to understand all the problematics
00:34but as well to convey a message of friendship and solidarity from France and the European Union
00:40to help this territory to face the different challenges, economic development, education
00:47but as well the consequences of climate change.
00:50Both Greenland and Denmark say the island is not for sale.
00:53Macron's visit comes ahead of a G7 summit next week
00:57which both he and Trump will attend.
00:59Trump has not ruled out using force to take over the island.
01:03His Vice President J.D. Vance visited a U.S. military base there in March.
