00:00U.S. official cars were seen departing Greenland's capital Nuuk on Thursday after U.S. Vice President

00:07J.D. Vance and his wife Usha downscaled their planned visit.

00:12The couple were scheduled to tour the capital as well as visit the pitific space base in

00:16the northwest.

00:18But after a public outcry from Greenlandic and Danish lawmakers, who slammed the trip

00:23as aggressive, the itinerary was reduced to just the base.

00:27It's clearly a de-escalation, because, if you want to put it a bit quickly, the Americans

00:35had an idea about whether they could buy Greenland as well, and they couldn't.

00:39And then there must have been some idea about it, and then you can charm the Greenlanders

00:43to yourself and ask for permission from the U.S.

00:46And that's how you should think about this visit, from the other lady and some high-profile,

00:52high-ranking American politicians to the Greenlandic society.

00:57U.S. President Donald Trump has for some time routinely expressed his desire to control

01:03the self-governing region of Denmark.

01:06He has recently renewed his interest in doing so, adding that he will achieve his goal,

01:11quote, one way or the other.

01:13Russian President Vladimir Putin is not surprised with Trump's persistence.

01:18The Russian leader noted that Washington first set its eyes on the Arctic island in the 19th

01:23century, but added that the current administration has serious plans.

01:54In a further show of defiance to U.S. threats, Greenland formed a new broad coalition government

01:59on the eve of the Vance's visit.

02:02The new unity government brings together four of the five elected parties in parliament

02:06and aims to send one strong message.
