00:00Ever wondered why every plane you've ever flown is made by either Boeing or Airbus?
00:05Like seriously, in a world with over 190 countries, how come only two companies decide
00:10how the entire planet flies? These two giants, Boeing from the US, Airbus from Europe,
00:16own the commercial aviation market. Together they make 99% of all large passenger aircrafts.
00:21But how did we even get here and is that even safe? Making a commercial plane isn't like making
00:27a car. It costs up to $20 billion, takes over a decade and has to pass some of the strictest
00:32safety standards on earth. So yeah, only governments and mega corporations can afford to play.
00:37That's where smaller players either get bought out or just quit.
00:41But these two are basically updating old phones and calling them new models.
00:44The Boeing 737 MAX, it's based on a design from 1967. Airbus A320neo, that's a 1988 airframe with
00:52new engines. Why no major innovation? Simple, no real competition. After two deadly crashes,
00:58the 737 MAX was grounded worldwide. Turns out, Boeing had a huge say in its own safety certification.
01:05The FAA allowed Boeing to check its own homework. Whistleblowers say cost-cutting was prioritized
01:10over safety. In a real market, bad decisions get punished. In duopoly, they just move on.
01:16Boeing and Airbus accuse each other of cheating. And guess what? They're both correct. The WTO
01:21literally ruled that both got illegal government aid. Airbus through European loans, Boeing via US
01:27tax breaks. China's Comac is trying with the C919, but they still rely on Western parts and are
01:33struggling to get certified internationally. Other companies like Embraer and Mitsubishi make
01:38regional jets, but they can't touch long haul. Big league stuff. So unless someone rewrites the rules
01:43with electric planes, AI co-pilots or supersonic jets, this duopoly isn't going anywhere. So next time you
01:50board a flight, remember, you're not just choosing a destination, you're boarding a plane built by one
01:54of the two companies in the sky they own. What do you think about this? Let us know in the comments below.
