An outback community is welcoming visitors to its annual shearers shindig. The south-west Queensland town of Thargomindah is still recovering from devastating floods that had damaged 90 percent of homes and businesses. The residents have rallied to get the pub, motel and caravan parks up and running in time for the shindig.
00:00Around 80 shearers from across Australia and also overseas have gathered in Thargaminda to find out who can shear a sheep the quickest.
00:10Last year that was around 27 seconds.
00:13And so the Thargaminda Shearers Shindig is a weekend full of colourful events.
00:17Yesterday the school kids competed in the colour run, there was dash hound races today, pig races and of course the quick shear.
00:25Organisers reckon that this is the richest quick shear in Australia.
00:29There's a prize pool of around $41,000 and first place takes home $15,000.
00:35This of course is a town that just two months ago was devastated by flood water.
00:40The entire township all but 12 properties inundated with water that no one saw coming through to the extent that it did.
00:47When you drive into town everything looks as it should be, your classic outback town.
00:51But look a bit closer and you'll find blue stickers showing where the 2025 flood level came to.
00:57You'll see fences with a line of debris that shows where that water came up to.
01:01And you'll see caravans where dozens of residents are still living in with their homes still unable to be lived in.
01:08But this event, the Shearers Shindig, has given the town an opportunity to come together to put aside some of the difficulties they've faced in the last few weeks and have fun.
01:17And of course in the classic outback way there will be plenty of quirky characters, tourists coming in putting money into the caravan parks, the pub, the motels and an opportunity to see what the outback has to offer.
01:29That's also an incredible weekend.
01:30That doesn't mean being especially typical things going different.
01:34With all of these kind of Milan trains don't really care if you do, not even though they're there that have in the state where there are__quare.com.
01:37Perhaps it's just a long way in those environments without having a Hispanic community.
