Giru residents in Queensland face flood aftermath as Haughton River recedes

Along Queensland's Bruce Highway is the small town of Giru, which was cut off by floodwaters, after more than half a metre of rain. But with the Haughton River receding, we managed to get in to see how the locals are faring.

00:00The clean-up begins. This is Shannon Chown's first big flood. The water swept through his

00:10yard, the house spared, but there's a muddy mess all the same.

00:14We were pretty prepared. We lifted just about everything up, so anything that's floated

00:18around probably needed to go anyway.

00:20The water's gone, though the shops still closed. With the Horton River receding, the pubs open,

00:27a cold drink to be savoured in the North Queensland humidity.

00:30Your beans were a flood before?

00:32About four. All the big ones, anyway, around here, yeah.

00:35How does this one compare?

00:36It's up there, yeah. The volume of water was huge, hey.

00:39There is still some water running through the streets of Garoo, but after days of rain,

00:45the weather has finally cleared, allowing residents to begin the clean-up.

00:49After days trapped inside, many were relieved to get out.

00:54Still getting cabin fever, being at home.
