00:00:00Good morning this evening. I also know the workies do. I see it every day. And we're standing up here tonight, a local ghetto man, the same as Brendan down here as well, two local ghetto men standing up here tonight, giving out awards to his son and mother.
00:00:30Amazing people. I am totally honoured. So I just wanted to thank yous all from the bottom of my heart. Thank you. So to all of the script, can you hear me okay in the back? Good on you. Okay, so ladies and gentlemen, welcome to the Derry Journal, Beth McLean, People of the Year Awards. Please welcome to the stage, Mikey Doherty.
00:00:53That was a practice run there. That was a practice run. Do you see what I mean by following the script?
00:01:02So anyway, good evening ladies and gentlemen and welcome to the 2025 Derry Journal, Beth McLean, People of the Year Awards.
00:01:10Tonight we gather to shine a light on the people who make our community extraordinary.
00:01:16Over the course of this evening, we'll be honouring incredible individuals and organisations across 15 inspiring awards.
00:01:27These awards will show compassion and courage to those who lead, lift others and lead a legacy.
00:01:34Without further ado, please join me in welcoming another younger man, Brenda McDade from the Derry Journal to say a few words.
00:01:52Good evening, everyone.
00:01:53You're all proud to welcome here to the Derry Journal People of the Year Awards 2025 sponsored by Beth McLean.
00:01:59And this place I'll share with you to our panelists, all those here to support them, and to our awards sponsors and the attention of them.
00:02:07There's a famous quote that goes, no one ever complained about a speech being too short.
00:02:13So I'll be as brief as I can.
00:02:16It's great to have our new Mayor, Brian McKee here.
00:02:19You're very welcome.
00:02:25And thank you for helping us to shine a light on so many other VIPs.
00:02:28You're a very good company here today.
00:02:30Personally, I'm also delighted to have a fellow gallium man, as he mentioned himself, Miggie, at the helm this year.
00:02:37A few years back we created a new community hero category, and Miggie was the first ever honour of that.
00:02:43Well deserved it was too.
00:02:45It's rather no coincidence that this is now one of our most popular categories.
00:02:49So what have you started with?
00:02:52We're also delighted to have representatives from our new owners here tonight.
00:02:56As of this month, the Journal is back to being part of a family-owned business for the first time since the 90s.
00:03:02Our new owners bring within the vast experience of serving and celebrating local communities across the area.
00:03:08And that's what tonight is all about.
00:03:09When he founded these awards, the late great workman across him recognised the need to shine a light on the good deeds and extraordinary achievements of people here.
00:03:19We are honoured to continue with work we began.
00:03:22The first edition of the Journal was published this month, back in 1772.
00:03:27Over the course of the intervening two and a half centuries, the Journal has been instrumental in providing a voice of war and shining a light on this region and its people.
00:03:35We feel privileged to continue that tradition and legacy today.
00:03:40Growing up, most of us in this room and in this part of the world didn't feel a lot.
00:03:45As Lisa McGee made clear in Derrick Harris, there are no trust forms.
00:03:50That we have each other and in our respect we were rich.
00:03:54There was always a great sense of community in the North West.
00:03:57And when somebody fell down, people were allowed to lift them up.
00:03:59Out of that great community spirit, charities, rescue organisations and community festivals sprung up, some of them are here tonight I think.
00:04:08Alongside grassroots campaigns to help people in need and to demand better for us and better for those around the world who suffer under injustice, poverty, persecution or discrimination.
00:04:18Either in Ireland or Sudan, Ukraine or Palestine.
00:04:23People here have never been found wanton when it comes to caring, compassion, talent.
00:04:28Standing up and standing out.
00:04:30And looking round this roomy, it is obvious that Derrick, Donegal and Turun have lost none of that spirit.
00:04:35Out of our communities have come people who have done extraordinary things and lead across the world, here and lead across the world.
00:04:45Honouring all those people in those organisations is the right reason for these awards.
00:04:50Last page.
00:04:52Later tonight, with our Lifetime Achievement and Ambassador Awards, we will honour two extraordinary individuals from this city.
00:04:59who have made history and put us on the map.
00:05:02And they, like the other families gathered here, represent the best of us.
00:05:07I want to say a quick thank you to our hosts and the brilliant staff here this evening at the Everglades.
00:05:13Thank you to the nominators, the judges, the journals on events and advertising teams for all their hard work.
00:05:19And personally, I want to say a like thank you to our own team in the journal, who go above and beyond.
00:05:22And tonight, it would not be possible without our great sponsors, Bette McLean,
00:05:28dare I say it's Landistic Council, A.E. Global, Specsavers, Ulster University,
00:05:34Alchemy, Keller and Sylvia Garriott Court.
00:05:37Thank you all for recognising and backing your community.
00:05:40And before I go, I just want to say a quiet word to our finalists.
00:05:45At the journal, we have been nominated for a few awards or sales over the past few years, reached the finals,
00:05:49and then we won a few, and then we lost one.
00:05:53And I was grotted on that night.
00:05:56Raging, actually.
00:05:58All that practising your gracious face actually didn't pay off at all.
00:06:02People could just tell.
00:06:05And then someone leaned over and said to me,
00:06:08you know, reaching the finals is a one of itself.
00:06:11And it was special to you of these awards tonight.
00:06:12To be here means people that have seen something very special in each of you.
00:06:25This is all your night.
00:06:27Before I make way for a very special performance,
00:06:30there's a lot more entertainment in the media here.
00:06:33Can we please want a round of applause for all your finals.
00:06:35Thank you so much Brennan, and can we now put our hands together?
00:06:46For the amazing artists.
00:06:49I was just taking a look at Martin here at the Grove Theatre.
00:06:52The Grove Theatre has been having over 45 years,
00:06:56from the first two years on the set-up.
00:06:58And they started this.
00:06:59Our city has built some beautiful actresses,
00:07:02top-class performers,
00:07:04with the nice of Martin,
00:07:06taking on the awards of the last 20 years.
00:07:08So thank you Martin.

00:07:13So please put your hands together,
00:07:15for the Grove Theatre Group.
00:07:16and welcome to our young generation here at the Seaman.
00:07:33It just blows me away.
00:07:35You know they are our future.
00:07:37They teach us lessons.
00:07:39They teach us how to be kind.
00:07:40They teach us how to give,
00:07:42without receiving and just be speaking to some of the young artists down here tonight
00:07:50just totally blew me away, so thank you very, very much. These are the future, so thank you.
00:07:58This does the important part is the awards and it will be emotional, so can I just say, just let it flow.
00:08:04We're running amongst good people, people from Derry, people from Donegal, people from across the water.
00:08:10So let it flow and the emotions flow, just let it flow. I don't want to be crying in myself.
00:08:16So let's start off, ladies and gentlemen. So first of all, I hope you all enjoyed your meeting
00:08:21and can I ask you to give a big hand to the staff at the Evergreen Street this evening.
00:08:25The food was unbelievable.
00:08:29Sam and her staff are just amazing at what they do.
00:08:32They pull out all the stops, it's fast service, get you solid service.
00:08:36So thank you. Thank you to the dishwashers, thank you to the people who couldn't believe this,
00:08:40the people behind the scenes. We wouldn't be eating without Jesus.
00:08:42So thanks, thanks again.
00:08:46Okay, so, on we go.
00:08:48Tonight we are here to celebrate the incredible people and organisations that make our community shine.
00:08:5715 inspiring awards honouring, compassion, courage, leadership and lasting impact.
00:09:07None of this, none of this would be possible without the careful consideration of the judging panel.
00:09:14So please put your hand together in joining me and thanking the judges.

00:09:23Mukesh Chu.
