There will be long spells of sunshine for much of England and Wales this afternoon. Scotland and Northern Ireland will also see the occasional bright spells, although it will be generally cloudier here with showers occurring intermittently. Meanwhile cloud will thicken in the southwest of the UK bringing heavy rain for parts of southwest England and southern and central Wales. There is a yellow thunderstorm warning in place for this area from 2pm until midnight tonight. Temperatures generally above average. Feeling hot especially in central and eastern regions. - This is the Met Office UK Weather forecast for the afternoon of 13/06/2025. Bringing you today’s weather forecast is Aidan McGivern.
00:00Hi there. The heat and humidity continues to rise during the rest of the day and that could spark some very severe weather overnight.
00:08The Met Office have issued an amber warning for thunderstorms across parts of eastern England.
00:13But ahead of those thunderstorms, actually long spells of sunshine for much of England and Wales and for Scotland and Northern Ireland also some bright spells,
00:21although showers will occur on and off here and there'll be cloudier skies in general across much of Scotland and Northern Ireland.
00:28The cloud then thickens across Wales and southwest England with heavy rain moving in here by the evening rush hour.
00:35But before the thunderstorms arrive in the east and southeast, it is going to be very warm, if not hot.
00:40Temperature is peaking at 29 Celsius.
00:43Here's the system that's likely to bring some lively weather overnight.
00:46And it's these frontal systems that'll bring some heavy rain and some thunderstorms to many parts of the UK.
00:53But within these frontal systems, within this plume of heat and humidity emanating from Northern France, that's likely to destabilise.
01:03And that's where the most severe thunderstorms are likely to occur across parts of the east and southeast of England.
01:11So initially during the evening, it's dry towards the southeast, but we'll be watching developments over northern France very closely,
01:18because that's where these thunderstorms are likely to develop and drift northeastwards.
01:23As always, there's an element of uncertainty in terms of the exact track of these systems.
01:28We won't know the finer details precisely until it starts to take place.
01:33But the signals are that it's across east Anglia and the far southeast of England, so Kent, Essex, Suffolk, Norfolk,
01:40where we're likely to see the greatest risk of impacts from the torrential rain, large hail, one, two centimetres in diameter,
01:51frequent lightning and gusty winds, 50 mile per hour wind gusts, perhaps more with some of the most lively thunderstorms.
01:59And so all of those elements could cause impacts across parts of east Anglia and the southeast in particular during the hours of darkness.
02:07But of course, the amber thunderstorm warning reflects the fact that it's a risk of these impacts occurring,
02:15not a guarantee, because we'll have to keep an eye on developments across northern France
02:19and see exactly where they're going to end up as they drift northwards.
02:23And even if you're not in the amber zone, there are yellow warnings in force for thunderstorms across many other parts of the UK,
02:30areas of heavy rain and thundery showers drifting north across parts of western England, Wales,
02:35and then into Scotland and Northern Ireland by the end of the night.
02:38Meanwhile, later in the night, anything that does develop across the southeastern quarter
02:42tends to drift into the North Sea as an area of heavy rain.
02:46And it's going to be a muggy night wherever you are, whether you've got the thundery rain or any clear spells that happen to continue.
02:53Temperatures not drifting much below 16 or 17 Celsius.
02:58We start off Saturday with areas of heavy rain, thundery showers and some very wet weather in places.
03:04Not everywhere will be affected, but you can see how messy it becomes during Saturday morning
03:08with an area of low pressure in place across the UK.
03:11Persistent rain for Scotland and Northern Ireland, some thundery showers for northern and central England,
03:15but brighter skies developing across the south and southeast.
03:19By the end of the afternoon, it's largely dry and sunny towards East Anglia and the southeast,
03:25with temperatures still reaching the mid-20s in places.
03:27We've still got relatively warm and humid air here.
03:30Then, later Saturday, any rain and thundery downpours tend to slowly ease,
03:36but we do still have a wet end to the day across parts of Scotland as well as Northern England.
03:41Drier towards the south with clear spells,
03:43and that's a sign of a change on the way for later in the weekend.
03:47We've got higher pressure starting to build towards the south,
03:51and so a fine day in the south on Sunday,
03:53and the more settled weather develops more widely across the UK as we go into next week.
