00:00At least 100 people are now confirmed dead after an Air India plane carrying 242 people
00:07crashed shortly after take-off from Ahmedabad in Western India.
00:10The flight that was bound for London's Gatwick Airport crashed into a residential building
00:15close to the airport at around 1.40pm local time.
00:18While many more passengers are feared trapped, the authorities say the death toll could rise.
00:24On the aircraft, a Boeing 787-8 Dreamliner was carrying 217 adults, 11 children and 2 infants.
00:32Amongst them 169 Indian nationals, 53 UK nationals, 7 Portuguese citizens and 1 Canadian.
00:39Air India has confirmed the plane gave a mayday call moments after take-off but then went silent.
00:46The jet crashed into a hostel building belonging to BJ Medical College, killing several medical
00:51students and injuring others. Rescue efforts are ongoing and officials say that 70-80%
00:57of the site has been cleared. While survivors have described harrowing escapes, some jumping
01:01from the building's upper floors to safety. Meanwhile, the Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi
01:06has called the tragedy heartbreaking, whilst the UK Prime Minister Sakhir Starmer said the images were
01:12devastating. Boeing says it is investigating. This is the first fatal crash involving the Dreamliner
01:18model since it entered commercial service in 2011. Ahmedabad Airport has suspended all flights
01:25meanwhile, and Air India and its parent company Tata have activated emergency response centres
01:31and are working to support families of the victims.
