Uneasy World Cup countdown begins as FIFA hosts Fan Festival in New Jersey

With the one-year mark on June 11 before the 2026 FIFA World Cup, leaders presented the fan experience even as concerns grow regarding the impact of President Donald Trump's immigration crackdown.

New York-New Jersey held the waterside party, where local officials and fans celebrated against the backdrop of Ellis Island.

The United States, along with Canada and Mexico, is set to co-host the finals, which will feature 48 teams and a record 104 matches in a tournament that FIFA boss Gianni Infantino said would usher in a new generation of soccer fans.

00:51local food, global culture, and a dynamic sponsor integrations.
00:55Tens of thousands of fans will gather here each day,
00:58creating a festival atmosphere that mirrors the energy of the World Cup itself.
01:02The FIFA World Cup is expected to be the biggest sporting event in history,
01:21in humankind, bringing over 1 million visitors to the region
01:24over the 39 days of the tournament.
01:27And we're looking forward to welcoming those fans from all over the globe
01:30to enjoy everything they love, particularly in New York State.
01:34This epic sporting event adds to New York's heritage and pedigree
01:39as a global center for sports.
01:53New York, New Jersey region is soccer central worldwide, globally,
01:59for the next 15 months.
02:02And I'll leave you with one last thought.
02:05I don't want to put words in the mouth of Gianni Infantino and his great FIFA colleagues,
02:10and we've got an outstanding relationship with them.
02:13We were with Gianni earlier this week.
02:15Cannot say enough good things about that relationship.
02:18I don't want to put words in their mouth.
02:19But a big reason why they love this region, in addition to diversity, passion for the sport,
02:28the fact that we'll turn out the fans, we'll host between a million and two million visitors next year.
02:35How about that?
02:36It's because of the commitment to the legacy of this World Cup.
02:41Not just for the six weeks and the 48 nations and the eight matches that met life
02:47and the 104 that you'll be able to watch at Liberty State Park.
02:51But what does it mean 10, 20, 30 years from now?
02:55Particularly in neighborhoods that have not touched the sport yet.
02:58or little kids who may pick up that ball and kick it around for the first time.
03:03MLS was born out of the 1994 World Cup.
03:07I can only imagine what will be born out of this World Cup.
03:10Our concern and our goal is to make sure that everyone that comes to New York, New Jersey
03:28has an incredible time and sees the uniqueness that is not just the United States, but New York, New Jersey.
03:35And so, you know, what we're seeing right now is, you know, I was just in Munich for UEFA.
03:39People are super excited about the World Cup being in the United States.
03:43They're really excited about the finals being here in New York, New Jersey.
03:48And so, you know, our goal and what we're working on is ensuring that everyone who comes here
03:54is going to see something that New York, New Jersey can be proud of
03:58and be a part of something that is uniquely New York, New Jersey.
04:01And, you know, I think something that you have to kind of know when you're putting on mega sporting events,
04:06whether it's the Olympics or a World Cup or anything, is the world is still going on.
04:11The world doesn't stop for these sporting events.
04:15And you kind of have to, you know, go with the flow and make sure that you're able to adapt.
04:19New York City is the most diverse place in the world.
04:38Millions of people from around the world come here to start new lives,
04:41and they bring their love of football with them.
04:44Back in 2022, after a nail-biting penalty shootout,
04:49New Yorkers excitedly flooded the streets to celebrate the World Cup winning team
04:53because we are the capital of global soccer.
04:57We are excited to be the hosts of the new FIFA Club Cup this summer
05:00and the 2026 World Cup next year,
05:03including the World Cup final with a huge celebration and viewing party in our Central Park.
05:10Along with New York, New Jersey's host committee partners,
05:13the City of New York is hard at work planning for these games and all the events to come.
05:18We project that the 2026 World Cup will achieve between $2.14 and $3.45 billion
05:25in economic output for this region,
05:28with approximately 60 to 70 percent of that redounding to New York City
05:31thanks to tourism and events.
05:34A huge win for our region.
05:48This is Harden City.
05:49Where's the function?
05:51Where the function?
05:53Where the function?
