00:00Light painting is a little bit like drawing but instead of putting pen to paper it's actually
00:09creating light effects in mid-air. My name is Stephen Knight and I'm a light painting photographer.
00:18I got into light painting through urban exploring which is going into underground places I probably
00:28shouldn't be. Because they're dark I had to illuminate them with torches for photography
00:33and that sort of sparked my interest and that introduced me to what's known as light drawing
00:39which is where you're creating light trails.
00:51So light painting photography is a type of long exposure photography
00:55so my photos can typically take anything between one second to three minutes sometimes even five
01:03minutes and during that time you're basically building up these light trails or you're illuminating
01:09objects and you're just adding to the light in that exposure.
01:16So today I'm going to be creating a light plant and that's going to be using
01:19four different elements of lights and light painting tools.
01:27So a lot of my light designs are what I call light plants so they're based on floral art drawings.
01:38So to do the light paintings I use lots of different types of tools so one is a plexiglass rod like this
01:45then I might also use fibre optic whips, fibre optic brushes, light blades, there's lots and lots of
01:54different devices you can use for light painting and of course there's also torches or flashlights
02:00that you need to to put the light into the light painting tool.
02:03So on my instagram page I always mention the photographic exposure that I use and also the light
02:16painting tools that I use and a lot of that is because it's very important in the light painting
02:21community to try and help teach other people learn light painting so I always try and provide as much
02:27information as possible so people can try and reproduce my photos.
