00:00Growing up I never thought that we would have to worry about not having salmon.
00:12It was just natural to think that we would always have our traditional foods.
00:30My name is Joy Haskell. I am Dakath from the Gran Tun clan.
00:42And this is my res, Tachay, which is located in Northern British Columbia.
00:49I love salmon and they have been a big part of my life.
00:54Salmon have been of the utmost importance to the existence of Indigenous peoples for thousands of years.
01:05The voice of the salmon for me is just that renewal.
01:08Every single year, you hear it in the wind, you hear it in the water.
01:14The water gets wild out there when they're trying to protect their salmon.
01:20We all share a similar story of salmon because we come from salmon. We're salmon people.
01:29Salmon is so powerful and so sacred to Dakash people that we don't even have a salmon clan crest because it's too powerful.
01:41It's incredible that they remember exactly where they came from.
01:44It's like us. We should never forget where we come from.
01:47Colonialism has interrupted our families, our connections to the land, all of that.
01:56This is my finished product, something that was passed on to me by my grandmother.
02:01I see salmon and I really feel something.
02:04It's a lot of work. You go out there and you set net and you come back with only two fish.
02:09We used to catch a hundred.
02:11It's a tradition that I absolutely will never let go.
02:15Treasure every moment we have.
02:17Oh, yummy fish eggs.
02:19Blessings to the food and to the cooks and to the beings that gave themselves up to nourish us.
02:27Wild salmon are a keystone species and are important to everyone.
02:34They deserve our respect.
02:38The salmon don't have a voice.
02:40We are their voice.
02:43We are their voice.
02:44We are their voice.
02:45We are their voice.
