00:00No, this video does not show a NATO strike on Moscow.
00:07This video is circulating widely on social media
00:11and is being wrongly described as showing NATO forces striking Moscow at night.
00:17Users claim the strike on the Russian capital happened earlier this month
00:20on the eve of peace talks between Ukraine and Russia in Istanbul.
00:24They accuse the NATO alliance of trying to start a nuclear war with Russia.
00:30The far-right American radio host and known conspiracy theorist Alex Jones
00:35shared the unfounded claim in a post that has been seen more than 2 million times on X.
00:42But the claim is false.
00:44We used a reverse image search to identify the origin of this video
00:48and found it in fact was taken in December 2023.
00:52It shows Ukraine's air force striking a Russian warship in Crimea
00:58using an air-launched cruise missile.
01:01That strike damaged a large landing ship
01:03which Russia was using to transport tanks and land troops ashore.
01:08It happened in the port of Feodosia in Crimea
01:11which Russia annexed from Ukraine in 2014.
01:15Some users have also linked this video with a so-called Operation Spiderweb
01:20in which Ukraine says it destroyed as many as 40 Russian military airplanes using drones.
01:26But the video is completely unrelated to that operation
01:29and does not show a drone strike.
01:32NATO forces have not directly engaged in any military activity
01:36as part of Russia's war in Ukraine
01:38but do supply Ukrainian armed forces with military equipment and arms
01:43including long-range missiles.
